View Full Version : Spektrum Woes
Racin'Jason 8 11-13-2007, 11:40 AM Hi all,
Just looking to see if anyone else has experienced this......
I have used a Spektrum Pro/M11 combo for over a year without one glitch in Pro-Stock or 19T. I ALWAYS use receiver packs in these classes.
One time last spring I was practicing 10.5 at my local track with a Novak SS esc and had it shut off for approx. second. This happened two or three times in EXACTLY the same spot. I was not using a receiver pack. I heard of other guys having problems with Spektrum at this same track. I went on to Maximus to race and never had a problem again.
Just this past weekend I was at the same offending track using that same 10.5 motor with a new GTB....no receiver pack but using a Spektrum receiver capacitor. Three times in the same heat the car would come off the same corner, go into full brake, and turn left....ending in a violent "spinout". The car remained unresponsive for about 2 seconds and would then take off with no problem. I decided to run 17.5 and did so without a problem, but first I raised the ride height and sprayed the bottom with anti-static spray. What's up? Spektrum claimed it could be a power delivery problem with the GTB, but should 10.5 cause enough of a voltage drop to lose signal? They also said that it sounded like it went into fail safe, but I don't have it set for full brake and left turn. Huh? Does anyone use receiver packs in brushless? Spektrum also claimed that their static issues are over and they don't feel there is a problem with their equipment.
Also...two weeks prior I had no prob. in 10.5, but the R.H. was VERY low this weekend, like 20%
NASCR3 11-13-2007, 12:14 PM Jay what corner are you having the problem in? As you may remember I had a similar problem with my SK in the center of 2. Car would just turn hard right in the center into the outside wall and remain un-responsive for a few seconds. The one constant I have been able find is that the Spektrum Pro receiver was in the car each time. I have yet to have this problem with either of my Spektrum micro's (I hope I didn't just jinx myself), in my Pro Car on the dirt, or my pan car on carpet running either 19T or Stock and I'm not running a receiver pack in either car. I did have a shut down off of 4, but that only happened one time. Ken finally got to experience the brake-hook-wreck off of 4 but that was only a one time deal and hasn't happened to him again. You might want to talk to Al Jr. & Lil' Taylor, I know that they have had some Spektrum issues too.
John
Racin'Jason 8 11-13-2007, 12:18 PM John,
It is coming off of 4 just approaching full "trigger" and it happens within INCHES of the same spot - SCAAARRY in 10.5. Fisler also had a glitch to the right in the center of two...much like you described. I'd like to get this figured out as 10.5 was my first choice for this weekend. I was thinking about a LiPo receiver pack.
ToddFalkowski 11-13-2007, 12:25 PM Jason, I've always run a receiver pack in brushless. I've seen people having issues with both the GTB & Spheres- I chose to "eliminate" the issue. It's strange that it's in the same spot, though... Seen issues where a heavy load will cause it (like getting the car bound up in the corner) but at nearly the same spot... That is weird...
Racin'Jason 8 11-13-2007, 12:28 PM Thanks Todd!
Are you using the ol' NiMH (receiver packs) or are you using the Lipo? 10.5 cars are heavy already!
ToddFalkowski 11-13-2007, 12:33 PM I'm still using the old one (Pro-Match's version with a novak switch and an airplane-style red plug for charging) My Silva was light anyway, so the weight didn't hurt me... Think the RIP cars are a little heavier... I've got some stuff cut out on mine too (for flex) which helps...
katf1sh 11-13-2007, 08:54 PM running 4 cell 19 turn oval i had every problem you could ever have with spektrum.
i switched to futaba fassst and life is good.
alot of guys have had 0 issues with spektrum..i tried mini receivers and receiver packs and everything else, nothing helped me.
Outlaw 44 11-13-2007, 09:05 PM Anybody having these issues running the Spread Spektrum GTB?
I specifically ordered a Spread Spektrum version so to not have any problems like this...
The problem with your spectrum system comes from a spike in the motor/speedo pulling high power under a load at spool up causing the voltage to drop for a millisecound in you battery pack and reciever.
This will turn any reciever off -on.
You can run a reciever pack or a cap pluged into your reciever.
ToddFalkowski 11-13-2007, 11:37 PM Jason- I should say I'm running the OLD original GTB. No spread spektrum, no LiPO cutoff. Now, I do know a buddy of mine had problems with an LRP- it was in LiPo mode (which shuts the ESC down under a certain voltage).
Think that may have anything to do with it? Doesn't explain the SS stalling, but might explain the new GTB...?
katf1sh 11-13-2007, 11:40 PM no receiver pack but using a Spektrum receiver capacitor.
he is using a cap currently! i tried both and had 0 luck.
and if every receiver lost signal when we put a heavy load on it we would all have damaged cars. 4 cell mod is a true test of any receiver system..so far fasst is passing the on track tests so far. spektrum failed every one of them for me. 9650 lrp sphere or keyence rapida pro it never worked for me.
burbs 11-14-2007, 12:28 AM The stock receievers require a higher voltage to run them.. Most guys i know just run a capacitor, and have no issues.. When i ran mine last year i bought the mini reciver, that runs at 3.8v. I never had a single problem with brushless once i switched. Best bet is to buy the 7 dollar spektrum cap, or spend 100 on the micro reciever..
Racin'Jason 8 11-14-2007, 08:27 AM Thanks guys...
I am running the Spread Spektrum version of the GTB. Running this does not guarantee the stop of "shutdowns"...it just allows the FET'S to switch faster allowing the ESC to run more efficient and ultimately cooler. I am a firm believer in receiver packs and I have several receivers, so I will try a different receiver in conjunction with a receiver pack. I will let you all know how I make out this weekend.
Anytime72 11-14-2007, 09:29 AM Jason, I had similar problems and it seemed to fix the problem.
Walter
I run the pro Spektrum SM1001 SR3001 with the spektrum cap with both 13.5 and 10.5 ,4 cell never a problem.
A guy at the track is running the Futaba system with out a cap so far no problems with it either.

katf1sh 11-14-2007, 11:11 PM walter that makes two of us! lol
Tommygun43 11-15-2007, 12:27 AM i switched to futaba fassst and life is good.
Make it 3!
Futaba=no receiver pack, no cap, no worries about it shutting off. Flawless.
I just jinxed the crap out of myself.

Good...you've been winning too much lately anyhow.
ericsalvas 11-15-2007, 12:22 PM hey Jason....could be a couple of things....
first ...its true the micro rx do require less voltage to run...since no need to supply voltage to the telemetry stuff included in reg and pro rx...
2nd...i had some problem in the past from LOW ride height...the RR corner of the chassis would rub(even slightly on carpet) to 'cause some static sparks...this static would cause interference...this is resolved by raising teh chassis(LOL)...or adding some teflon tape or vinyl on RR corner of chassis...
3rd...way too much power spike out of corner...to lower down the voltage goin to the rx...wich would go down in power...even a power cap couldn't retain the voltage needed to maintain a good functionnality of teh system
4th...the esc BEC could be weak...so the system is not suppling enough power to the rx...
solution....i'd say...solve your RR rub porblem...rx pack...or micro rx...
been runnin micro rx with NO problems since february...no rx packs...no caps...
this with as low as 6 turns on carpet(4cell)...

ericsalvas 11-15-2007, 12:24 PM also...make sure your battery shrink is well maintained...sometimes...the battery shrink would be damage...and a portion of the battery case(negative)would ground the chassis...

The Jet 11-15-2007, 06:24 PM I will let you all know how I make out this weekend.
I'll have to make sure I'm IN FRONT of you all day:jest: .
Racin'Jason 8 11-15-2007, 07:05 PM Eric...thanks for your thoughts!
Bret,
I have already pondered the I-87 twin bridge pile-up. It doesn't look good in my mind. I'll make sure it's taken care of!
Racin'Jason 8 11-18-2007, 12:40 AM FYI...
Receiver pack did it! Not one glitch tonight. Car is pretty heavy but it beats shut-offs anyday!

Good to hear, Jason!
intimidatorjr33 02-10-2008, 12:39 AM What voltage is your receiver pack? I have had problems with mine shutting off and coming back on while running it in my living room. I gets discouraging as I have wanted to upgrade for a while and now it does not work correctly. I have one receiver in a four cell pan car with a tekin g12 3 c speed control and a modified motor. I have another in a tc3 with stock motor and same tekin speed control. both do it. and come back on.
Racin'Jason 8 02-10-2008, 12:49 PM I recently started running a Losi Micro-Baja Li-Po pack. It's nominal voltage is 7.4V and only weighs .4oz with a switch. Can be bought from Horizon hobbies with the charger for like 45 bucks.
garacer08 02-10-2008, 11:54 PM I may have to try that. I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. Im running 17.5 Lipo, Futaba 3pk with spektrum pro system, and Lrp sphere touring speedo. My car would cut off with the steering turned to the left coming off of turn 4 about 3-4 times each heat race. It also happened off of turn 2 once during the second heat. I tried a new Rx for the main but was taken out with a busted shock on lap 7, so not sure it worked. I will also try a rec pack next weekend.
