well, if they couldn't get Ray Liotta...

Actually, it's a good choice. And he appeared in "I, Robot" with Zephram Cochrane.

I like what I'm hearing about this film. it gives me hope that the story is going to be broader than just Kirk and Spock.

Kirk and Spock are the carrots.....Pike is the stick? :P

Very interesting choice. IMNSHO, Mr. Greenwood is one of those under-used actors out there in HollyWeird.

I would have expected someone younger but I suppose he'll do.

Next to Kirk and Spock, Captain Christopher Pike is my favorite character from the original series. It would have been a cool idea to focus a movie or two on Pike. He was Captain of the Enterprise for ten years, Lot of potential there. Just happy now he is in this film in some way.

Why? With the timeline we know, Pike would have had to have been in his early 50s when he handed command to Kirk.

Jeffrey Hunter was about 38 when he filmed "The Cage." "The Menagerie" takes place 13 years later. Bruce Greenwood is currently 51. Allowing for a little fudging of the age of the actors vs the characters, it looks like it's about right depending on when exactly this new movie is set.

Kirk's age was mentioned as 32, IIRC, in one of the TOS episodes. (Please correct me if I'm mistaken.)

If the movie takes place when Kirk was in SFA, then Pike should be around 37 -- 41.

I think it has been established that the movie is not Kirk at the Academy. This was an idea suggested by Harve Bennett in the early '90s after the failure of the fifth movie. The fact that they've cast an 18 year-old to play Chekov indicates that it must take place only a few years before TOS.

Since it was established that Kirk used to be a teacher at the Academy, I'm assuming that is what we'll be seeing in the movie, possibly with Chekov as a cadet.

This is great news. I've liked Greenwood ever since "Nowhere Man," a short-lived (and underappreciated) show in the mid-90s. He's a good actor and I'd like to see his take on Pike.

Loved him in "Nowhere Man" as well, Jose. Wife and I are still torqued that they canceled that show just as they were giving us an even larger mystery!

When he took the role, did he sign a contract or just flash once for yes?

Geez, no quidding. Same thing in our household. You have to wonder if the Conspiracy was behind the cancellation...

He got too close and they re-programmed him! I get it.

Pike should be somewhere in his mid-forties then. Close enough.

Anyone see John From Cincinatti? Greenwood is in incedible shape! He'll be fine.

The academy story was a ruse. This takes place just before handing over the Enterprise to Kirk. The old Spock may be speaking at the academy telling the story of their first mission. The new Trek is here ala James Bond's new Bond. The old guard is gone and here comes the new Kirk and company. Long overdue.

Greenwood is the best in the cast as far as everything I've seen. Sadly, John from Cin didn't get the attention it deserved. He will be in the new movie about Bob Dylan as well. I hope this to be a good reboot. Afraid to get my hopes up, though.

So I guess if it's Pike et al, then the vessel will be the original sixties Consititution class?

Would be cool to see that classic vessel on the big screen.
