Marching experience preferred?

How much talent does it take to march? "No, your OTHER left!"

You'd be surprised, apparently.... ;)

I did band in junior high, high school and college. I can pretty much walk a straight line drunk as a skunk - so long as I can keep my balance, walking straight isn't a problem. Basic training taught me, tho, that there are a LOT of folks who just can't march, let alone walk a straight line.

So, trust me - there are indeed folks in the world who have ZERO marching talent.

Funny, I don't recall Starfleeters marching much. Are they looking at revisiting the Nazi planet from "Patterns of Force"?

The purpose of marching is to instill discipline, teamwork, work your buns off and follow in a coordinated pattern to orders. it is not the same as goose-stepping.

Yes, it's all true, but I still don't recall Starfleet personnel marching much, in any show or in the movies.

Maybe it's going to be a musical with a couple of big Busby Berkeley-style production numbers. He got a lot of his ideas from drills he learned in his Army days.

well, we are talking about the academy for a paramilitary organization. marching would sort of be 1A.

There is no mention of acting experience requirements. Also, one would think that in addition to marching ability, intelligence would also be a requirement.

The original concept for Starfleet was that it was NOT a military organization. It was solely for scientific study and the advancement of the federation. The Starships were armed for defensive purposes only. It goes back to the whole "Earth got past it's need for conflict" thing.

Rodenberry was very unhappy with the advancement of the military style uniforms and practices.... specifically from STII on...

I always laugh when people say that TOS Starfleet was not a "military organization", obviously they've never actually watched the show...

Regardless of what anyone thinks about Starfleet being military ornot, you're talking about a ship in the middle of space. It's not a pleasure drive where you can just walk out of the ship and stretch your legs when the engine blows. It will still require military style training to instill a sense of unity and sacrifice when the time comes. The ship is number one and just about everything else is up for sacrifice.

Captain, First Officer, Security. Sounds military. Or old time sailing ships.

Captain, First Officer, Security. Sounds military. Or old time sailing ships.Well, that WAS the original concept: Horatio Hornblower in space.

With his utopian-socialist vision of the future, Gene Roddenberry was never really comfortable with the the idea of military power in space. Creating the Enterprise (the terms Starfleet and Starfleet Command weren't used until halfway through the first season of TOS) as a naval-type vessel was a compromise to make the show easier to sell to network TV. After all, the idea of a "space navy" with military-style organization, rank and traditions goes back to the earliest pulp sci-fi. It's a familiar model, something everyone can relate to. However, even in the original series, there were departures from military tradition (eliminating the class distinction between officers and enlisted personnel by having only officer's rank, no saluting, and so on). Military Lite, if you will.

But ST:TNG went even further in de-militarizing Starfleet, to the point where it was neither fish nor fowl. On TOS, for example, they would beam down a "landing party" -- a traditional naval term. On TNG, they had "Away Teams" -- sounds like high school football.

I can't remember where I first read it, but I presumed that the photos of Zachary Quinto in Spock makeup, along with photos of extras with whatever costumes and makeup they were wearing concealed under hooded robes, confirmed it.

Regardless, it either just started or is about to start -- so one way or another, they're getting the show on the road. Bring it on!
