My Oil company's manager wants me to look at his 1960's mower with a 2 cylinder wisconson engine. He says it is misfiring and popping. Im sorry i don't have any information on the engine or mower but if someone can just ive me a general idea of what to look for on a wisconson engine because ive never worked on one before. Thanks in advance!

Just like any other loud, noisy internal combustion engine, 1) fuel-right mixture, 2) compression-right amount, 3) ignition-at the right time.

Usually these engines will have a fairbanks morse magneto assembly on the side of the engine. You need to take the cover off and check the points make sure they are cleaned and properly gapped (.015") I believe should be good. Clean the cover and check the cover for cracks, clean if it has a lot of dirt and or oil residue on it. The spark plugs should probably be replaced, but take note they are likely not standard. Check the spark plug leads as they could also be leaking and arcing to ground. These engines are pretty good and will run forever if taken care of. Thats why they are so popular in industrial applications.

This is on a mower?? Must be one of the old Yazoo out front mowers, thats the only mower I ever saw one of these engines on it. The highway department used to use them in the 70's around here.
