What are some good 1/24 scale kits to start with? Should I look primarily at parma?

My opinion parma good as any. Are you going to commercial raceway or home racing? Home racing carrrera is good. If you are gonna scratch build H&R are pretty good. Parma makes a starter kit. Just my opinion.
Parma is good, but if you can find them still, Carerra makes some and there is a new kit that just came out from BRM. These are hard body or non-lexan setup that have plastic chassis vs. the metal pan chassis like the Parma kits. Most of the true 1/24 racers are running Parma, but these kits that out by BRM are supposedly very nice too.

If you wanna race 24 scale, I like 4" WB Flexi chassis cars with 501 motors.
Parma or Champion Turbo.
I mostly race Parma Flexi - 4s with .790 tires 10 tooth conical pinion and 28 tooth sprocket.
With .010 Parma Outlaw M bodies.
But you need to get used to making lexan bodies, because they get destroyed.

My $.02...Buy the cars and controllers and supplies from the local track guys. Help keep the track going as long as possible. The $3 you save on a chassis through an online store or auction is easily eaten up in shipping. That being said, I like Parma and Champion cars for beginners. Easy to set up, easy to repair, and parts are available.
