Sorry to say but after 9 successful years of creating and running the ORL (Outlaw Racing league) I have officially announced my retirement from the series. Unfortunately my personal time and other interests at this point do not allow me to put in the needed effort for the series. I didn’t even get to participate in half the events this year and I know next year won’t be any better.
Plus, it does get old having to constantly defend the series for being blamed for ruining local weekly racing, and it gets old getting the guilt trip from tracks that say if they don’t get an ORL race they will be forced to close and the ones that are on the schedule need a second date to survive, and it gets old listening to racers complain about every track we go to, whether it is Mushroom Bowl, Trains & Lanes, Kranzels, Strand, Trax 70, etc. Geesh, what’s the difference, we are all racing on the same thing. And there are those that are never satisfied with the classes chosen for the season.
I never made anything financially off of the series, it was never meant to. And without the time to properly put into it anymore, it just isn’t satisfying enough.
Despite us already laying the ground work for next season I had been debating on whether there should be a 2008 ORL season at all. Jonathan McMinn has close to half the schedule already set at this point.
The whole concept of the series is 10 races at 10 different tracks. We’ve been doing the chase a lot longer than NASCAR (heh-heh). And this was just meant to be a local series. But because of the lack of tracks anymore we have had to look at tracks much further away from each other which in turn just thins out the amount of racers who run the whole series.
Well, at this point it is up to you the racers to decide if there is to be a series or if everyone should just go support their local track. I’ll be watching from the sidelines and willing to answer any questions and provide any information about running the series.
I still think this is the greatest hobby to be involved with and I cherish all the great friendships I have made throughout the years. I will still try to race when I can along with my 9 year old son who is interested in trying RC racing but unfortunately the closest track to my area is an hour and a half away ever since Horsham closed. So, I’m sure you’ll see me here or there once in a while.
Before I end I’d like to give a huge THANKS to Al Spina who has been by my side since day one, David Dries who deserves much of the credit for keeping the series on track for the past several years, Gordie Beidler for listening to me rant about everything and putting up with me during every one of those years, Jonathan McMinn who has been putting in a great effort getting the 08 season in order while I leave him high and dry, and to many others that have made this 9 year experience very enjoyable.
Thanks!
Bill Henning
TOME57 11-04-2007, 10:51 PM Sounds good. The 17.5 seems like a good choice to add. Good to see trucks will be back.
jmcminn 11-08-2007, 08:33 AM I'll have two rookies playing in the Sportsman Class next year. Need to get some new blood (even if it’s my own LOL) in the hobby. You all have been warned.
BILL80 11-08-2007, 04:22 PM Warning: I've got a 3rd young new rookie for next year.
Al Spina 11-08-2007, 05:32 PM It looks like we will have some fun racing next season....
abdule 11-08-2007, 07:16 PM so Al,you still thinking of running the 17.5 ??
Al Spina Fan 11-08-2007, 07:39 PM so Al,you still thinking of running the 17.5 ??
Tyler the terror will be out for 17.5!
beekman 11-08-2007, 07:58 PM i think the 17.5 should ron the car of tomorrow body! that would be cool.
PUF19 11-08-2007, 08:01 PM why you want Ron in 17.5??
Al Spina 11-08-2007, 08:07 PM George: I plan on racing 13.5. I thought the 17.5 class was for beginners and old timers!
jman91 11-08-2007, 08:10 PM George: I plan on racing 13.5. I thought the 17.5 class was for beginners and old timers!

Al Spina 11-08-2007, 08:44 PM I like the speed of the 13.5!
jman91 11-08-2007, 09:07 PM I like the speed of the 13.5!
I thought with "beginers and old timers" that had your name written all over it.Just kidding Al. I hope to make the Kranzel's race.If not I'll see you guys at Glen Burnie sometime.
abdule 11-09-2007, 06:48 AM :woohoo: I had read somewhere that you were testing the 17.5 for the ORL, was that true? :woohoo:
Al Spina 11-09-2007, 08:08 AM I was going to get one to try it out but I never did.
jmcminn 11-09-2007, 08:41 AM I ran one at Maxiumus and it was Stock speed that didn't fall off.
mr_meat68 11-09-2007, 03:03 PM thats gonna be considered the beginners class? isn't that a little fast?
TBRC1 11-09-2007, 09:17 PM By the brushless motors needing to be stock is this plain jane boring no goodies or is this more like right out of the package ???? I want to know so I know what I'll need to spend on the motor for just a few of the 10 races.
When will the schedule be finalized ???????
BEACH 11-10-2007, 12:15 AM Warning: I've got a 3rd young new rookie for next year.
Cool, that means one more rookie finishing ahead of Al Spina!!
Al Spina 11-10-2007, 03:21 AM Jim: We went through this before about having respect for seniors. First you picked on a senior at the Mill and now this! Al.............
bologna 11-10-2007, 08:11 AM 2:21 am are you wakeing for the day just waiting for mickyds to open so you can go see people who pretend to be your firends after going to sleep at 6 pm... or is it just the senior bladder that cant make it through the night?????? well big al????
Al Spina 11-10-2007, 08:50 AM Brock: It was pee time! I had a little to much to drink and knew I was not going to make it through the night.

You can look under the Sportsman Brushless rules in the rules section on the ORL web site. That is the rules that will be used for next years stock class.
The schedule is getting there. Still a few tracks to finalize with yet. I'll announce the opening race this week.
Bill
jmcminn 11-10-2007, 11:45 AM thats gonna be considered the beginners class? isn't that a little fast?
No... Look you gear the motor to the ablity of the driver. Last weekend my son Jacob age 10 was zooming around GB in the rookie class with a 13.5 in his car. I just tuned down the gearing and Radio so he was at the proper speed for the class. A 17.5 would be even easyer to take the edge off. and remeber they can run a 27 turn stock moter in the Sportsman class too.
Greg H 11-10-2007, 05:42 PM If your going to Kranzles this Sunday, make sure to get there early to work the groove in, so it's ready when I get there.
popsss 11-10-2007, 06:05 PM the 17.5 class for rookies sounds good to bring in new blood.
BUT
you are not cutting costs
you are not evening out the playing field.
why you ask?
1 brushless motor costs more then spec.
2 4200' cost more then spec batteries
3 trucks and cars are not combatable together. i know im trying to run truck with cars now . ass end to light one bump you spin.
whats to stop some of the better guys from racing this class.
JUST SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
popsss 11-10-2007, 06:22 PM heres another tidbit
looking at points here are the number of racers by class that have a chance to make aleast 7 races
truck - 2
13.5 - 5
4300 - 3
pro cup - 8
more info last year
truck -12
pro cup -16
this going wrong way in my opion
whats different
last year half the races were on saturday
jmcminn 11-10-2007, 06:33 PM "whats to stop some of the better guys from running this Class"
PRIDE
I'm so tired of the "I don't want to go that fast" song-and-dance. There needs to be a place for New blood to come into the hobby and have a chance to be competitive and have fun.
Old School Race 11-10-2007, 06:44 PM I hope some of the better guys are encouraged not to run in the sprotsman class specially if there are going to be a bunch of young kids in there. But maybe they like getting their stuff wrecked. I've seen attempts in the past to run classes with spec packs but as usual after a few races and the novelty wears off there isn't any turnout. I think it's best to start with pretty much the same equipment as all teh other classes. I think if someone is limited to just running a spec battery and motor class because of cost they are more likely not going to follow a traveling series like the orl (as seems to have been proven in teh past). The spec type of class is something every track should be pushing for a local thing for beginners.
I beleive last year was a bit of a transission year because of teh whole new brushless thing which is why there were so many classes. There was a lot of class jumping throughout the year as the more popular class(es) developed. Though it took a year I think that was the best way to find out what classes would work for the future since it seemed nobody really knew for sure.. I'm not clear on your saturday thing, are you trying to saying that saturday races causes people not to come out?
Greg H 11-10-2007, 07:34 PM Wow, the whole Brushed vs Brushless deal was beat to death on other threads already. 1 brushless motor = 10 brushed motors + brushes, so which one is cheaper? I've been running the same brushless motor all year and other then the purchase price I haven't spent a dime on it. By the way, your allowed to run the brushed motor in 17.5 if you like.
As far as spec packs vs 4200's, This is a traveling series, so it is necessary to stick with what is commonly accepted at all tracks.
Truck bodies vs. car bodies? It doesn't matter. This is a development class. Many of the drivers won't be able to get enough out of their car to make up the difference.
Al Spina 11-10-2007, 07:51 PM Greg: You hit all the right points! That's exactly the way I feel.
It's not necessary to win the A main to have a good time(believe me). The fun is beening with a bunch of fellow racers and being competitive. If you are not enjoying yourself, pit with the group that I sit with and I guarantee you will have a couple of laughts during the day.
losi888 11-10-2007, 07:58 PM Al I thought you have to have to be an AARP member to pit with that crowd.
Joe DiGirolamo
TBRC1 11-10-2007, 09:54 PM Well under the rules from this yr it looks like my motor will be just fine for 13.5 .......................now I need to get another brushless speedo and a 10.5 motor.
Now if I'm reading things right the 17.5 class is more for newbies or racers who will feel more comfortable at that speed ??????
BEACH 11-11-2007, 12:26 AM Now if I'm reading things right the 17.5 class is more for newbies or racers who will feel more comfortable at that speed ??????
YUP, just for you Toby! Jim
Al Spina Fan 11-11-2007, 09:07 AM Yes Toby,
Several of us have kids at the age where they want to race but do not yet have the skill to stay out of the way of the more experienced guys. It is hard to go to a race and have your kid just sit and watch. It is also hard to try to get them up to speed so they are not just a roving chicane.
I think this is a great class that anyone can run as long as they realize that there will be rookies out there and the veterans that choose to run with them do so at their own risk.
popsss 11-11-2007, 09:31 AM what i was getting at about saturdays was the numbers were up.
traveling on sundays a couple of hours is a lot harder to do when you got to go to work on monday.

this is about the only thing i agree with you about.......
as far as spec batteries well ask some of the strand guys who bought over 30 spec batteries to be fast.... where is the savings in that
now that we are on the battery subject has anyone looked at the battery rule for next season???
the last few batches os 4200's have really sucked just ask brock!!!
hi buddy
Old School Race 11-11-2007, 10:00 AM i heard they were thinking of allowing up to 4600 but were waiting a litle to make the final decision.
bologna 11-11-2007, 10:52 AM i am in the prosscess of doing 68 cells im 40 in so far and i have 2 good cells as of now.
i love it now its time to drown my sorrows with some brew.. hehehe
hi al
bologna 11-11-2007, 10:58 AM news flash i now have 3.. 1 more and i may have 1 pack hehehe

I may be wrong, and I know I'll never be able to find the posts, but I thought the intent of the ORL was to provide a series for the elite racers and very close wanna be's to compete. It was to provide an oppurtunity for these racers to test their skills at driving and setting up cars for a wide variety of tracks.
In my opinion, the place for beginners and experienced racers to mingle is at the local weekly run track, and not a prominent event. At a local event the track hotshoes already have a good track set up and can spend more time with beginners and help them out.

this is true but a racer with less exp. can learn a lot on car set up going to different tracks and i also will have a new racer coming probably next year so i am glad there will be a class he can race in

Thats great but some of us wanna be's will not leave our 10 yr old kids at home. There is now a class for them to improve. This issue of the elite is BS. I've been in the ORL to one extent or another from day 1 and do not remember anyone making it an exclusive club for the elite only.
By the way, who are you???
Peter Coll
Al Spina Fan 11-11-2007, 01:43 PM news flash i now have 3.. 1 more and i may have 1 pack hehehe
Lipo for you Brock. I believe 4600s will be legal for Snowbirds and then 4200's will go away. We all know fresh packs run best so we have a little while before we will need new stuff.
Did ya kill bambi's daddy yet?? lol
bologna 11-11-2007, 02:09 PM yea peter i took a nice 8 point buck on oct 15th 12 yard shot.. 5 bucks and 17 doe were all within 35 yards in a white oak flat when i took the shot.
abdule 11-11-2007, 02:48 PM so with all the problems with the 4200's at this point in time, what does that give us to race with NOW ?
Al Spina Fan 11-11-2007, 02:58 PM Good ? George. I just got fresh 4200 packs but they wont last long. Perhaps you should push our Fearless leader (Hi Bill!) for a decision sooner rather than later. LiPo...LiPo...LiPo....(Got the point yet?)
Tommygun43 11-11-2007, 03:26 PM Found a couple places that might have 4200's in stock. Good luck.
Promatch Racing (http://www.promatchracing.com/products.php?cat=6)
Hefty Cells (http://www.lefthander-rc.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=983)
Team Hurricane (http://www.teamhurricane.net/batteries.html)
Looks like promatch only has 1 4-cell pack left and 33 6-cell packs. If your really in a bind this (http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/showpost.php?p=2118387&postcount=1) guy would probobly be happy to sell you some packs, he runs a hobby shop. Maximus might have packs also.
abdule 11-11-2007, 03:52 PM Peter, I have no yank! just take pics that you all never see.........
mr_meat68 11-11-2007, 08:08 PM i think i've read enough...
one other question though.... you think that some of the people that were running stock are ready for 13.5 and 10.5? you guys are nuts. if you want this kind of racing just go to marshalls.
let the kids run 21.5 and teach them how to make a car go fast.
