View Full Version : Small track brushless motor
charger01 11-02-2007, 08:56 AM I would like to introduce brushless to my local track but I do not know which motor would be a good choice. A C027 will propel our pan cars to 82 laps on a good day, and we would like to stay in that range ( or a tad slower!) for brushless. So my question is : Novak 17.5 or 21.5? We would like to keep 4-cell with the option of the whole class switching to lipo at a later date. Than you for any info as I have never even seen a brushless car run!
pmsimkins 11-02-2007, 10:13 AM A 17.5 will be nearly identical to a brushed stock motor on 4 cell NiMH. If you want to make the jump from 4 cell to LiPO and maintain similar speeds it will require a different motor. The LiPO batteries are 7.4V versus our existing 4.8V, so there is a big jump up in speed if you don't switch to a slower motor.
I don't know much about the 21.5 on 4 cells, at this point I don't think anyone has tested much with that configuration. The idea of the 21.5 was to have a motor that would provide similar speeds to our existing stock class but with the LiPO batteries. My guess is that the 21.5 with NiMH will be comparatively quite slow and will require some extremely high gearing.
charger01 11-02-2007, 10:19 AM thanks for the reply. for the time being we will probably go with the 17.5. will spec packs work, or are they not big enough for four minutes?
pmsimkins 11-02-2007, 10:26 AM I would think you'd be fine with spec packs. The 17.5s are no harder on batteries then a regular stock motor.
hobbyten 11-02-2007, 12:21 PM we run a spec class in mich. on a fairly short track and we run 5 min. with a 13.5 motor with little problem with the spec packs. we run about 8 laps slower than the regular 13.5 class.
A C027 will propel our pan cars to 82 laps on a good day,
You guys are running 82 laps in 4 minutes in stock??? :drunk:
wowza!
Fireball929 11-02-2007, 09:48 PM charger01 we up here in Plattsburgh NY run the 17.5 on a small track. Running stock motors only 2 of us hit 94 laps in 5 min. since the switch this year to BL two guys already hit 94 with a couple of guys running 93 flat. i think that the BL have a little slower up front times but hold better laps down at the end of the race. hope this helps.

67-4-fun 11-02-2007, 11:02 PM Were running 85 laps in 4 min with 13.5 at Terre haute,IN and probably will increase that by 2 laps or more I'm sure..
charger01 11-05-2007, 12:28 PM thanks, guys. we are kind of in the stone age where I race, but they are good people. Dan , if you think 82 laps is fast, I hold the track record in 12th scale stock with 87 laps! I bet I can't do that again!

i see windtunnel has a new spec battery pack that they are doing. it's a 3000 mah battery done in a 4 cell side by side and then shrinked. it's 25 bucks each which isn't to bad and from what i remember was a good battery. wouldn't have to worry about run time with these.
Fireball929 11-11-2007, 09:51 PM Just an update at our track. New record in brushless 17.5 is 95 @ 5.02.56 stock 27 turn is 94@ 5.01.50. Top 3 in the A main were separated by .44 sec. All running 95 Brushless I think is a touch faster.
popsss 11-12-2007, 05:55 PM we run at a bull ring in jersey 13.5 do 130 in six mins
swtour 11-12-2007, 06:06 PM Fireball,
Where brushless should really shine on a track like that...is the end of the race by not fading away. Add to that the fact they can pull so much harder due to the efficiency increase of a B/L motor.
Fireball929 11-13-2007, 11:20 PM swtour my brother went out first round with a 4200 with 1300 sec @ 6amps and broke track record by a sec. just goes to so how efficient the car and motor really are.
