Classic Hobbies

I personally want to thank Walt and his family for 18 years of racing in the Akron, Ohio area. It all started in a small store front with a banked tracked that looked like Bristol. For some of you who have never raced on that track, it was the start for many of us. Those where some wonderful and memorable times for us! Saturday you had to get there early or not get a pit space. We sometime would not get down with racing till the wee hours of the morning, and some of us would not get home till much later ( Thank you Theo’s)

We where crammed in there like sardines, but loved it all the same. Many people became friends, lovers, married and part of the Classic Family. Yes it was like a family. We loved, cried argued with each other. Yes people got angry or upset, but don’t all families.

I like many have been touched by the Ellis family. I have been a part of there lives for many years. I have raced with Eddie like a brother, yes it was like brothers! We traveled to many races together. The stories we could tell!!! I am very proud to know these people. I have seen there children, and some of yours grow up. I have raced with many of you and have taught many of you about racing and watched many go on to great things. All with the help of the FAMILY of Classis Hobbies. We have heard each other problems and helped out in any way we could. I am proud to have known a lot of you. Yes I haven’t raced in a while, but made it a point to go to the track and hang out. Many of you offered help, but like all races we want to be competitive and race. If I couldn’t do it fully then no point in doing it. Just the pleasure of see and being around the track and the people made it all wonderful.

I look back in time and remember pictures I have of other tracks we raced at. Like all things time and circumstances change. These other great tracks are gone. Lake Whippoorwill. King and the list goes on. I wish I could have done more, but that’s life all things live and die in time. I have given many things to Walt and his family and in return they have given me much more in memories and friendship. With this I say to the entire ELLIS family I love you guys and will always be there in anyway I can.

I would also just like to drop a little note.....Three or four of us from Willow Mill started coming out to the Fall Classic race a few years ago. WE always had a great time. Walt was always first class with us. Always made time to say hello and to shoot the breeze.

Walt and Classic Hobbies will be missed by us. To Walt, enjoy your time away.

Rich, Everthing you said is so ture, I remember when i was just a kid (14ish) you would stand on the track and tell me not to hit you, Man was i scared, but it worked I learned how to drive almost in that one night, I can remember when nick was almost still a newborn, And is was like a family, watching everone grow up, and alot moved on and alot came back.....

It is very hard to even think that Classic will no longer be the "hangout" for sat. nights, I can remember even telling my now Wife when I propossed that the one thing I would never give up is racing on Sat. @Classic.

I also still can't believe that after all this years I still had friends...LOL when i was young i was very hard to get along with, I got into many arguments with Walt, and Eddie, but sure enough the following week it was like it never happened and Eddie was back to building my motors, and Walt was back to telling me stories, Like nothing ever happened

GOOD TIMES, There are 1,000 more stories and they will never get old....Thanks for all the GREAT YEARS,

While I was far from local @ almost 4 hours away I will still miss that track... It was the 1 track that I would drive 4 hours just to run club races.. Its sad to see it close especially since it was one of the few remaining banked tracks. I wish all the best to walt, eddie, and the others who made it a great place to race.

Big thanks to Walt and to Classic.

I Got divorced back in 2001 and needed something to get my mind off things. RC racing was always in my blood so I took a ride down to the little shop on Rt 224. Took one look at an Associated 10L on the wall at Classic and my pan car racing career (although short lived, lol) began.

Each Saturday my buddies from my home town would come up to race with me at Classic. We had a great time running the Busch class and then eventually stock.
My buddies both quit racing, but I had met so many guys and became friends with the locals at the track. Everybody was always willing to help a new guy out and get him up to speed.

I quit racing over a year ago, but I'll never forgot the days of racing at Classic. From the club races, to the Hangover Classic, to the Fall Classic, to all the ROAR, NORRCA and ARCOR Nationals they held there. Always top notch events !!

The track maybe gone but the friendships built at that track will remain forever !!

I agree Erock,

I will never forget my time racing at classic. I used to look forward to racing every saturday for over 6 years. It seems sad to me that I will never get to run on the high banks again, but I guess life goes on. Thanks to Walt, Eddie, and everyone else involved with classic for all the memories.

Jimmy,
Yes Classic is now closed. They ran 1/4 scales this summer. But never reopened for the Fall/Winter season for pan cars.
