View Full Version : Brushless Oval Classes
I don't know a whole lot about brushless motors, but i am thinking about buying a brushless set up.
What is the most popular class for oval brushless racing? (13.5, 17.5, 4300 etc.) Is Novak the only motors that everybody uses, what about LRP? Does anyone make compatable motors for 13.5 etc. Nothing against Novak, I just always see their ratings (13.5 etc.)
What about the new 21.5 will it bee more popular than what's out there now, it looks like it might. I hate to buy anything without some research, and then find out it's something that nobody runs.
Thanks

The most popular class depends on location, but overall it is probably 13.5 at the moment. The 17.5 is very new still and it will get a lot bigger as well. You should see what guys are running where you plan to race locally and decide what to get based on that.
The 21.5 was really created for LiPO racing. With conventional 4 cell NiMH the 17.5 motors are equal to brushed stock. I believe the the 21.5 with 4 cell NiMH may get run some as a spec class for new racers, but outside of that I don't forsee it getting run much. With LiPOs that is another story.
Like I said before just go see what is being run locally by you and go from there.
We run the 10.5 with lipo here on the west coast, and LRP does make a 13.5 motor, that I have been running in Onroad and its great...that and lipo I get great speed and torque in my TC5.
Oh yea, why are Novak motors the only LEGAL motors for Oval racing?????

ROAR technically only recognizes BL as a modified class, so it isn't applicable as far as motor rules. Every major race and every oval track I've heard of only allows the Novak motors in classes outside of modified. Your track may choose to do different but if the original poster would like to attend any major events they will all be Novak motors only.

Not all 10.5 or 13.5 motors are created equal. LRP's maybe faster then Novak's and someone else may come out with a new one that is faster tomorrow. Oval racers collectively have decided to stay out of that game by choosing one brand of motor. That way we don't all have to run out and buy the newest one if it is a fraction faster. Also, Novak was first to market and that's what we all started with, not to mention Novak supports oval racing while no other manufacturer really does.
swtour 10-31-2007, 05:38 PM jnor,
different areas have put different rules together that are best suited for that area.
We've been testing out here on the West Coast for most of the year. We only introduced brushless racing as a recognized class this year by running a 4 cell 10.5 class (aka 4300)
But, there has been such a rash of battery failures this year..and so many of our racers have been racing for many, many years..and have become frustrated in the never ending battery technology changes and subsequent rules changes.
Therefore, we started looking into LIPO battery ideas for 1/10th oval racing. The problems is that since we were running 4 cell exclusively, a switch to a 2c LIPO would mean voltage would be taken back up from 4.8 volts to 7.4 volts. Powering the motors of today with that kind of voltage in a oval car would make the cars too fast for most people, so we started (ALONG WITH ARCOR) looking into having slower motors built to suit the LIPO voltages, yet keep the actual 'on track' speeds as close as possible to what we already have.
From this spawned the 17.5 and 21.5 motors. The 17.5/LIPO can be used to replace the 4 cell/10.5(4300) motor or where it's still being run the 19t class. The 21.5/LIPO can replace a 27t STOCK/4 cell type class.
...in other areas, organizers are planning to stay with NIMH 4 cell batteries. For 4 cell the 17.5 motor works great as a Brushed Stock replacement. The 13.5 is someplace between Stock and 10.5 (but very close on most tracks to the 10.5)
...as for WHY ONLY NOVAK MOTORS.. "CONTROL"
For years we haven't had real control over a lot of product introduction...and for years oval racing has suffered losses in numbers. IMHO it was time for something radical to change. So a change in equipment AND a change in HOW and WHAT things can be used...might make a difference if done correctly.
