View Full Version : 30 Days of Night
Jim NCC1701A 10-23-2007, 07:31 PM Okay, not really a movie to model to..?
But has anyone seen it? Hasn't been released down here in NZ - even though it was filmed here - but the trailers I've seen for it look pretty damn good. And I'm a sucker for a well-made vampire flick.
This one is on my list of "to see's", along with a locally made pseudo-sci fi vampire flick called Perfect Creature.
Cheers!
Griffworks 10-23-2007, 11:01 PM I've not seen the movie yet - obviously - but had heard about it over at Starship Modeler. So, I ordered the graphic novel (comic) from Amazon.com and read it about a week or two ago. Looks interesting. Haven't seen any trailers, tho.
BTW, I also recently saw a preview for Perfect Creature. Forget which of the recent DVD purchases it came from, tho. I want to say 300? Looked like an interesting Alternate Universe Vampire flick.
Ohio_Southpaw 10-24-2007, 10:18 AM I'm going to see it Saturday. If nobody has chimed in by then, I'll let ya know what I think about it.
Roland 10-25-2007, 07:23 AM Isn't 30 days of Night a book as well?

It's a comic book.... Oh, excuse me.. a "Graphic Novel"
Griffworks 10-25-2007, 03:20 PM Yeah, you gotta be careful with whether you lable it a comic book or graphic novel. Some folks get all upset. I guess the difference is that a graphic novel is a lot longer than a standard comic book, is stand alone and doesn't have the ad's all thru it like regular comics.
I never really cared that much about the differences, myself. To my thinking, if it looks like a comic....
Jim NCC1701A 10-27-2007, 12:04 AM Yeap, it is a graphic novel. But it was originally pitched as a movie.
No studio picked it up so it was done as a graphic novel and then the studios got interested...
Griffworks 10-28-2007, 01:33 PM Thank the Stars and Stones - I get to see this movie on my next night off at the big base theater here. I'm pretty excited about it, as I usually don't get to see a lot of movies on my night off. It seems lately that they've had movies that don't appeal to me at all unless it's the middle of my work week.
Anyhow, will let folks know what I think sometime Tuesday night (here).
Roland 10-29-2007, 07:32 AM I saw the 30 Days of Night Graphic Novel as well as a novelization of 30 Days of Night at Barnes and Noble the other night. So there is a book as well. But, the Graphic Novel came first.
Griffworks 10-30-2007, 06:37 PM SPOILERS!!!!
SPOILERS!!!!!
SPOILERS!!!!!
OK, had heard about this movie from over at Starship Modeler, originally. It's based on a graphic novel (i.e. comic book) of the same name - and I heard, tho haven't confirmed it, that it was originally pitched as a movie, but when the studios weren't interested the originators went the graphic novel. I purchased the GN thru Amazon.com a couple weeks back and enjoyed it.
Anyhow, got to see the movie tonight on the big screen, tho. Gotta love First Run movies being shipped Over Here to us troops! :D
IMDb page for 30 Days of Night (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389722/). The movie stars Josh Hartnett and Melissa George as a husband and wife sheriff team (in the comics), Danny Huston as Marlowe the lead vampire and several other familiar faces in supporting roles. For those who don't already know, the movie takes place in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States. It starts on the last day that the town sees the sun during wintertime - and is in total darkness for 30 days (give or take).
I think they did a great job of adapting the graphic novel to a movie format, expanding upon the story told there rather nicely. There's plenty of gore - but gore that's not shown all that graphicly except for one seen. Otherwise, all we see is blood covered characters - vampire and human - and one fella's head stuck on a pike. Otherwise, there are cuts and such but no entrails strewn about.
My only disappointments were two elements left from the novel - the guy who flies in trying to video the town via helicopter who appeared to be some sort of vampire hunter and the scenes from the very end of the movie that take place in Los Angeles, I think it was.
I don't want to give too much more away, but I really like this movie. A definite Must See if you're a vampire fan of any caliber. I'll definitely be picking up a copy once it becomes available on DVD.
