View Full Version : 2001: a new release
Lou Dalmaso 10-23-2007, 03:11 PM Hey guys,
A heads up if anybody doesn't know that there is a new release of 2001 in stores today.
Do any of the experts out there know if there are any new model shots or behind the scenes stuff on it?
spe130 10-23-2007, 03:16 PM Again?
spe130 10-23-2007, 03:18 PM The 2001: A Space Odyssey (Special Edition) DVD will feature the following bonus materials:
* Commentary by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood
* Theatrical trailer
* Channel 4 documentary: 2001: The Making of a Myth
* Standing on the Shoulders of Kubrick: The Legacy of 2001
* Vision of a Future Passed: The Prophecy of 2001
* 2001: A Space Odyssey - A Look Behind the Future
* 2001: FX and Early Conceptual Artwork
* Look: Stanley Kubrick!
* Audio-only interview with Stanley Kubrick
While the features sound interesting, I'm happy with my movie and soundtrack box set (which has the restored, anamorphic 65539 DVD). I assume that the movie itself is the same as the 65539 disc.

Zorro 10-23-2007, 03:20 PM ... nevermind.
Trek Ace 10-23-2007, 06:04 PM I bought the Blu-ray Disc version of it. I am really looking forward to watching it on Wednesday night. The amount of documentary material included in this release even exceeds that of the Criterion LaserDisc box set from years ago.
dreamer 2.0 10-23-2007, 10:22 PM I've heard the last issue was still not as good as it could have been, image-wise? Not got a Blu-Ray player, but I'm waiting for some techies to review the image and sound quality before I pick up the whole set of Kubricks.

HDNET showed what I am certain is the new HD master being used for this issue. It is phenomenal. Absolutely pristine. I was lucky enough to see 2001 for the first time in 70 mm Cinerama when I was 12 years old. I have watched the movie many times in many iterations over the years on TV, VHS, DVD etc.
Watching this version in true HD was almost as powerful as was my original viewing so many years ago. It was like seeing it for the first time again.
That said, I'll be very interested to hear from those of you who watch the new Blu-Ray DVD if you notice an "anomaly" in certain frames of "The Dawn of Man" sequence. HD reveals "mistakes" in greater detail too. When you watch that sequence - pay particular attention to the sky.
Carson Dyle 10-24-2007, 12:47 PM The re-released Kubrick boxed set is the first Blu-ray purchase I've made. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to play it on yet.
This release has been met by a fair amount of controversy with regard to issues of picture quality, aspect ratio, etc. Having yet to view any of the new discs myself I'm a bit fuzzy on the specifics, but I suppose I'll find out soon enough.
Where's Brent Gair when you need him.
BTW, if the recorded interview with Kubrick that's included amongst the 2001 extras is the same one included in the Taschen coffee-table book it alone is worth the price of the new disc.
jbond 10-24-2007, 01:01 PM I just got an e-mail from amazon saying they would not be able to ship this on time...I wonder if anyone's actually seen this set yet? Barry Lyndon WAS shipped...
Carson Dyle 10-24-2007, 01:06 PM Wow, I just got the same email.
Wonder what's up...
Jeff: Did you buy Barry Lyndon, and if so, have you watched it yet? Just wondering how it looks.
PhilipMarlowe 10-24-2007, 02:12 PM I got a "your items have shipped" email Monday, so my guess is they underestimated the demand and sold out. Nothing in the mailbox today though:(
Frakkin' post office. I ordered 2001, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining.

Great movies, but that's a lotta V.O. narration for one sitting.

Last I heard, he'd renounced militarism and materialism, given away all his worldly possessions, and joined the Hare Krishnas. No big surprise really. Brent was just that kind of guy.
Ohhh, Good one! But he actually took his ball and is playing at Cult's now.
I just walked in to BB and got my BR version of 2001 for 24.99 and I'm now going to sit down and watch it on the plasma. :)
Trek Ace 10-24-2007, 07:35 PM I arrived home early enough to watch the Blu-ray disc last night. It was the sharpest, clearest print I have seen of the movie since it's premiere in 1968 - perhaps even better. This one is flawless!
A better than fourteen-foot wide projection of visual splendor in my home theater. The Discovery slowly passing by is absolutely breathtaking - the space station and Orion shuttle, the trip to the moon, the moonbus, the stargate sequence - fantastic.
The picture quality is stunning. Very little grain, as is to be expected, since this was shot in 65mm Super Panavision with effects usually not going beyond first-generation in quality. The colors were totally rock solid with no bleed or noise whatsoever. The contrast was ever-so-slightly brighter than I originally remember it, with some white details nearly clipping, though still staying within boundaries.
If you didn't already own a Blu-ray Disc player, this title would be a good reason to go out and get one. There is not a single flaw that I noticed in the transfer. If there was any dirt or scratches present, they were completely removed during the mastering process.
I actually enjoyed it more with this viewing than in the theater for the first time, without the idiot in the row in front of me asking his wife/girlfriend if what was happening made any sense and complaining about the film all through the end credits.
If anyone is interested in really seeing the amount of detail put into the production design - sets, models, control panels, etc., that have eluded many a modeler because of lack of detail or resolution, then this is the disc for you.
In addition to the film, there are several added features that shine. First is an audio commentary with stars Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Second is a documentary on the making of the film. There are also several featurettes on the making of the film's visual effects and conceptual artwork, a profile of Stanley Kubrick, and several others about the production of the film. So far, I have only seen two of the featurettes and they are excellent.
Carson Dyle 10-24-2007, 08:12 PM Thanks for the review. I've been looking for an excuse to take the Blu-ray plunge, and this appears to be it.
Indeed. The movie is stunning. I was particularly impressed with the shot of the Moonbus right before it lands at the Monolith site. Just a masterpiece. Seen as it should be seen
woof359 10-24-2007, 09:09 PM is it worth buying blue ray if you dont have a HD tv yet???
No, it won't work on a non-HD set.
Trek Ace 10-25-2007, 09:08 AM I bought a PS3 for use as a Blu-ray player. You can set to output the signal at standard-def 480i as well as any of the hi-def modes. So, I know it will allow viewing of Blu-ray Discs on a non-HD set. I can't speak for other stand-alone players, though.
If that's true, I stand corrected, but essentially, there is no logical reason to get a BR player of any sort because if your TV doesn't display HD, you won't see any upgrade in picture.
Zorro 10-25-2007, 09:39 AM Anybody notice an anomaly in the "sky" in "The Dawn of Man" sequence? I'm really curious. It's only in certain shots.
The "brush strokes"? yeah, they were weird looking.

PhilipMarlowe 10-25-2007, 01:23 PM Got my Kubrick discs today, be patient guys, they are shipping them!

True. I know several folks, however, who also bought a PS3 and started their Blu-ray Disc collection so that when it came time to purchase the HDTV monitor, they would already have a player and library of titles to watch on the new set.

Oh, and if I could afford a PS3!

Just a little over a week ago, the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) had a week-long sale through several participating vendors for Blu-ray Disc titles for as little as $9.99 each. There were also buy-one-get-one-free offers and two-for-ones.
I was able to buy several new releases on Blu-ray Disc for far less than their DVD counterparts. A total of 22 discs in all.
This week, the Blu-ray Disc of 2001: A Space Odyssey was a mere $19.99 at Fry's. Well worth every penny, too!
PhilipMarlowe 10-26-2007, 09:28 AM 2001 fans got to get this DVD. The picture is amazing, I saw details on the Aries, the moonbus(those O2 tanks attached to the window frames!), and Discovery I had never noticed before. The most obviously improved scene was the space station, on the previous remastered regular DVD the skin of it seemed to be crawling in the close-up scenes, it's crystal clear here. The colors really pop out, and the black intermission scenes are missing the weird black rectangles that were visable in the previous edition.
The extras I've watched so far have been good, although there's not much real 2001 fans won't have read or seen before. The commentary by Dullea and Lockwood is pretty fun. Douglas Trumbull seems have gotten his problems with Kubrick off his chest on the Silent Running DVD, and is actually pretty respectfull here.
I do think they missed the boat not bringing Douglas Rain to do the menus!
jbond 10-27-2007, 09:20 PM By the way, did anyone else make the mistake of purchasing Barry Lyndon separately? The release dates and now the date info on the amazon listing (it's listed as a 2007 release) make it sound like this is part of the new Kubrick set--in fact it's exactly the same "widescreen" nonanamorphic release we've always had--apparently the Barry Lyndon remaster wasn't finished in time to include it with the set so it's coming out early next year. BASTARDS.
Days of Heaven looks incredible though..."There were these people...they didn't know...ya give 'em a flower; they'd KEEP it..."
spe130 10-27-2007, 11:32 PM I'd love to see an "early Kubrick" box set with his shorts, "The Killing," "Killer's Kiss," "Paths of Glory," and "Spartacus" (and "Fear and Desire," if the rights-holders could ever be convinced to do it) all fully remastered.
On that note, why are "Lolita" and "Dr. Strangelove" missing from the new box set? They were in the old one. With the "Barry Lyndon" issue, this is why I usually prefer to buy my movies separately.
