View Full Version : New batteries WHY???
everone always blames us "racers" for always having all these battery changes in a year, So Why would "Matchers" already start matching cells that are not even legal yet? Kind of looks like they are trying to force stuff on us... EP started making a good 4200, WHY go to a 4600?
If matchers keep this up it will really start to force Lipo's on people....
Alan Behler 10-21-2007, 08:38 AM honestly it has been awhile since we had a new battery
the current IB is too damn unstable i actually dont mind a new cell coming out
i am tired of cells going bad!!!
Butters16 10-21-2007, 09:08 AM But there is only so much power you can put into a sub C cell battery , which willl mean that the 4600 cell will be just as unstable as the 4200 battery. But we as racers won't go back to a smaller more stable cell that would last. It's not like we need the run time of a 4200-4600 battery. We just have to have bigger and better(sort of better). The best cell that was built in my mind was the 3300 ,they would take a pounding and still come back for more. JMO
swtour 10-21-2007, 09:38 AM me21,
I don't know of ANYONE who blames 'racers' for the new batteries.
It's always been the matchers looking for the newest, hottest battery...and getting a jump on the competitor.
As long as rules are not in place to stop "TECHNOLOGY" from being introduced the minute it's discovered...the rapid change in batteries will continue.
(Yeah, 4200's have been out a long time, but a LOT OF NEW batteries have already come out since them...thankfully they SUCKED worse than the 4200's...so they were never adopted. This easily could have gone the other direction.)
BEACH 10-21-2007, 09:43 AM In my own opinion the best battery ever was the 2000! Many years went by without a whole lot of trouble. But that is when rc racing was probably at its peak.
Again, just my own opinion and that and a quarter wont get you a cup of coffee.
Jim
me21,

But what is the real defination of "SUCKED" ?
Def: #1 Battery's that SUCK
A Cell that will blow up during charge, Also a cell that you have to worry about discharging before you ever buy them then they are no good, A Battery that you can not let sit for more then a week witout babysitting them.....
OR
Def: #2
A cell that can hold up, a cell that you can deadshort and gain Voltage for stock racing and still will last months....but has a little less runtime and voltage then the cell in Def: #1
hankster 10-21-2007, 11:32 AM I think a couple of factors are at play here. One is that IBs are not being imported any more until they address their problem. Second is the matchers figure the EP3600 will be approved for racing next year so why match and stock cells that will be outdated in a couple of months.
katf1sh 10-21-2007, 12:19 PM the ep4600 cells are roar legal
Fl Flash 10-21-2007, 12:44 PM the ep4600 cells are roar legal
Are they FOCAR & FCC legal also???
Not gonna make the next FOCAR race Kat, works sending me to Atlanta that weekend :(
Andy Koback 10-21-2007, 12:45 PM Everyone seemed to be content with the Lipo 3200, now I see there's a 3600 being flashed around. Trying to get the guys to make a switch I'm sure.
ICEMAN96 10-21-2007, 07:22 PM I AGREE THAT THERE ARE JUST TO MANY BATTERIES,motors, etc.I JUST WENT THROUGH MY PACKS THAT WERE NOT EVEN RUN IN APRIL AND THE WERE JUNK BUT I DEAD SHORTED ALL MY PACKS ABOUT 11 AND NOW THE VOLTAGE IS 4.99-5.05 @ 240 SECONDS WITH THE PACKS ENDING AT AROUND 320 SECONDS AND ONLY CHARGING TO AROUND 3100-3400 MAH.6 AMP CHARGE 35 AMP DISCHARGE TO 3.60 ON A GFX....WHY DO WE NEED MORE MAH BATTERIES,WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT SAFETY AND GET THE HOBBY GOING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION
katf1sh 10-21-2007, 07:25 PM no lee 4300 and under
jflack 10-21-2007, 10:35 PM Lol...
swtour 10-22-2007, 12:58 AM ANDY,
We knew ORION was working on a NEW Lipo battery when we started testing the 3200. I'm not sure JB's motives on the 3200, but I know mine included the fact that SHE was also looking at that battery, but having the knowledge of what people had seen over more than a full year of the 3200 being on the market played a valuable part of my reasoning behind pushing for that battery.
Plus, ORION assured us that regardless if the new battery came out or not...the 3200 will NOT be going anywhere anytime soon as long as there is market for it (UNLIKE NIMH cells)
OUR Push - those of us who are pushing for the LIPO 3200 batteries...is to STAY with the 3200's for the remainder of '07, along with the '08 racing season.
NO 3600's will be approved for our racing* *(Unless ORION wants to BUY OUT the racers who have already purchased 3200's, or trade them for a 3600 across the board)
...I'll always leave an out clause....LOL
swtour 10-22-2007, 01:02 AM BEACH - I agree on the 2000's, and the 1700 SCRC's (Black Shrink) was dang good too...
BUT the P170's & the SCE's were JUNK...so it took at least 3 1700 Nicads to get a good one....and lets see, the 2000's came out in what? 1997 or 98? I think we had them locked into our rules for a 2 year period.

why because from what I here there IB ship is taking on water. so it make sense for EP to release a new cell. lets just hope we can get the gp3300 stasbility back.
Andy Koback 10-22-2007, 06:19 PM SWTOUR, I like your thinking! http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/images/icons/icon10.gif
scott law 10-22-2007, 06:22 PM Maybe the resurgance of Gold Peak.

But will they be any better than the current IBs or EPs? Or will GP have to make the same durability tradeoffs to get 4600mAHr in their cells as IB and EP have made?
I would love a GP 4600 as durable as the GP3300s were/are.
[BTW, that link doesn't work.]
Until this battery stuff gets sort out....
Nitro is the New Electric! LOL :woohoo:
katf1sh 10-22-2007, 10:43 PM trader!
McLin 10-22-2007, 10:44 PM RPM, I just happen to know where you can race in a real good Nitro Series LOL But be for warned, after a seaon with Nitro, you will throw rocks at batteries LOL
OvalmanPA 10-22-2007, 10:49 PM The best cell that was built in my mind was the 3300 ,they would take a pounding and still come back for more.
When I said this when I "reluctantly" bought my first IB4200 batteries everyone laughed at me. Funny how nobody is laughing now.
dizzy 10-23-2007, 12:25 AM Go 1/4 scale and the battery issues go away. :)

Racin'Jason 8 10-23-2007, 08:39 AM Wow Dave...you've been busy!
I wonder how many of those are the same cell with different wrap? I see some of them have a red vent washer.
Wow Dave...you've been busy!

I heard of several recalls on toys.
Don't you know the shot gun IB cells are made in China!! LOL :freak:
Nitro is the New Electric!
KenBajdek 10-23-2007, 06:21 PM I am looking forward to the new cells. The IB's are not as good as they were 2 years ago. I can barely get about 3400 mah out of mine after 3 or 4 runs. I quit racing mod because the runtime had dropped off so much. Deadshorting them helped the dead cell issue but not runtime. I stored them fully charged, 1/2 charged dead shorted and dead shorting seem to be the best way to treat the IB4200.
ta_man 10-23-2007, 06:58 PM ...Deadshorting them helped the dead cell issue...
How? By making them all dead?
davepull 10-23-2007, 07:06 PM How? By making them all dead?
yup been there done that. about the only thing IB cells are good for is paper weights
ScottH 10-23-2007, 07:12 PM Until this battery stuff gets sort out....
Nitro is the New Electric! LOL :woohoo:
I hear ya!!
Going to run a 500 Lapper this weekend and have not even considered dumping.
You could not melt me down and pour me over this battery game right now.
KenBajdek 10-23-2007, 07:13 PM I don't understand how the deadshorting process works. But I had nothing to lose. I was having too many dead cells. It seems that by keeping the pack dead shorted the cells somehow equalized. I had runtimes over 60 to 70 seconds off from each cell. After DS they came closer to the same runtime. ???? The packs were so unmatched it caused charging issues and discharging issues etc.
davepull 10-23-2007, 07:31 PM what I am saying is it like a crap shot with dead shorting. Out of 3 packs I had 1 showed real good improvement the next improved but still sucked and the 3rd went into the trash because all 4 cells refused to take a charge.
heres the kick in the sac. these packs had 2 runs on them sat for 9 days at 3/4 charged were equalized then cycled twice. It's like pissing in the wind with these IB cells
davepull 10-23-2007, 08:38 PM look at this bad boy

Tommygun43 10-23-2007, 09:28 PM Batteries = most over rated thing in R/C. Mostly just a psychological advantage. Sad to see so many people buy in the the theory that you have to have new packs often and some quit because they think there being out spent.
davepull 10-23-2007, 11:59 PM the only reason I'm mad is because I have had alot of bad luck lately with cells.
ScottH 10-24-2007, 12:01 AM From what is looks like, everyone has.
davepull 10-24-2007, 12:06 AM yah but in know way do I think I need fresh sticks all the time.
I want my gp gp gp gp back, I want my gp gp gp gp , 3300 back.
I think we need more cow bell!!!!

ScottH 10-24-2007, 12:14 AM You gotta fever??
And the only prescription is MORE COWBELL!!
Tommygun43 10-24-2007, 12:18 AM ya I don't have any IB's from the blow up/half the cells are dead batch, that might be why I haven't had as bad luck as you guys lolololololol plus I admit for much more than stock you need some good stuff
ovalguy1 10-27-2007, 05:32 PM just to share a little story. This morning I was cycleing a pack and it exploded. The funny thang here is that it was only on for like 450 sec into the charge I heard it start hissing and by the time I got it out of the house smoke was every where. The dang thank exploded outside on the ground, it was a 4cell pack now it's 3 1/2. Lost my pour pit towel. IB needs to address this b4 someone gets hurt.

pmsimkins 10-27-2007, 05:37 PM IB is gone for now.
KenBajdek 10-28-2007, 10:23 AM what do you mean "gone for now"?
EMK68 10-28-2007, 10:31 AM IB is not bringing anything to the States until they get ther problem fixed. I read that somewhere on one of the threads.
