View Full Version : Cutting out bodys?
Burnsy88 10-09-2007, 06:49 PM Anyone have any ideas on anything easier to cut them out than using a razor? lol
pmsimkins 10-09-2007, 09:20 PM A lexan scissors. Available at all hobby shops for the most part.

The LEXAN scissors Pat talks about are great. They are curved which lets you cut around the edgees and corners better, they are very short blades so the manuver well...
For cutting the bottom edge - like at the bottom of the DOORS, I do that with a razor blade or exacto knife and a good straight ruler... Just SCORE a cut in the body - then bend the body on the cut line and the LEXAN just snaps off, leaving you with a PERFECT straight cut. (You don't even have to score very hard or deep)
There is also a circle cutter (From a company called OLFA or something similar) that works great for scoring your well well openings...then you do the same thing...bend them a little after the line has been scored..and the wheel wells tear right out , neat and cleanly.
RCTVLIVE 10-09-2007, 10:55 PM We showed a tech tip on how to cut out an oval body - it is show #702.

Burnsy88 10-10-2007, 12:25 AM thanks guys I will have to go snag some..I cut out the side windows on my legends and at first they looked HORRIBLE but I got them sanded down so it looks OKAY now.
C43GO 10-10-2007, 02:32 AM You could also go to a office supply store and find a cheap compass set with a compass with 2 metal tips I use this to score wheel wells it works great. I also keep an uncut tire as a outline and gently draw the outline then use the uncut tire to make a cut line that is perfect then I use the lexan scissors to cut out the wheel wells.

rickster58 10-10-2007, 12:48 PM Another simple way to do it is to look for a spray can (lexan paint etc.) or a drinking glass that is the size you want the opening to be and then press it down on the outside of the body, using something like the corner of a counter etc to support the car body, and just gently scribe it with your exacto. I say use a corner of a counter top because you need something to support the inside of the car that will fit inside the body so you can press on the outside.

NASCR3 10-10-2007, 03:11 PM Here is my method.
1. Pre-trim excess lexan from bottom of body to first cut line up from bottom.(if equiped)
2. Mount the body clear un-painted to insure front wheel openings line up with pre-marked line from manufacturer. (if equiped)
3. Using an old tire line it up with the wheel on the car, take a sharpie & trace around the old tire on the outside of the body at all four wheels.
4. Using lexan scissors trim out the wheel openings.
5. Paint body. Wait for body to completely dry.
6. Go to Home Depot & buy a 2 inch sanding drum. (in the tool dept)
7. Put the sanding drum in a cordless drill, then carefully & slowly make the holes a perfect circle. Don't get crazy with the trigger it's not your transmitter or a race to the finish, you don't have to pin it for it to work fast.
8. Check clearance on tires, you don't want a tire rub, (Smoke proved that at Kansas.)
9.Trim bottom for track clearance.
10. Wax body, apply decals, (unless their painted in) & go racing.

Racin'Jason 8 10-10-2007, 06:36 PM 5. Paint body. Wait 48 hours for body to completely dry.
5.5 Use heat gun and wait 48 seconds for body to dry.
OVALL1 10-10-2007, 09:38 PM I'm with you J!! 48 hours is a long time away from the track!
NASCR3 10-11-2007, 03:04 PM Paint the body mid week & it won't matter. No rush jobs here.
John
Racin'Jason 8 10-11-2007, 03:15 PM I don't rush either...but I do multiple colors. So, is that 48 hours per color?
NASCR3 10-15-2007, 02:53 PM No
wait a minute 12-17-2007, 12:03 AM dont forget a racers most important tool. a dremel tool. dremel works for everything especially when u have to fab up parts that break or need to be changed at the last second.
