They burn up periodically (literally sometimes). If you buy one make sure you have a back up or you may be left without a speedo at a race.

We had one burn up this weekend, literally, someone loaned him a GTB and his racing went on. I agree if you want to race one you had better have 2 just in case.

They burn up periodically (literally sometimes).

Not sure why, but we've seen the same thing with some of the GTB's (newest one with Spread Spectrum and Lipo Cutoff)

One driver has lost (3) so far. On the occasion of 2 or the 3, I loaned him one of MY original NON SS/LIPO versions..and he WON both of those races.

...haven't heard what is causing these failures, but NOVAK took care of them quickly...

New Lrp is sweet, but unfortunaly Ive lost three allready. Must be some kinda bug in them. 1st and 3rd ones only ran a couple practice runs, 2nd one ran for 2 race nights.

What's hard for me to understand is how this kind of quality performance is acceptable within these companies. Out in the real world at the places I've worked we get our balls busted over a 5 PPM failure rate and god help us if the failures started on fire.

10,000 PPM and products on fire = looking for a new job

It's bad enough the failure rate is atrocious, but to have the parts be totally unsafe as well? How can there not be a recall of this stuff? I really don't get it.

See you at Cincy Rick

I think part of it is the "Pushing of the Envelope" the companies go through...

Maybe this is why TEKIN is taking so long to release their product...

But, in the mean time...lots of racing is going on...lots of people are getting a lot of enjoyment out of their products that haven't failed...and these two companies are getting great feedback on the durability of their products in the "REAL RACING WORLD", and so far it looks like they are doing a pretty good job at taking care of the failures.

Somethings, I just don't think you can BENCH test for...racers do things a little different sometimes - and you can't be ready for EVERYTHING.

...granted, it may slightly inconvience a racer...but look at the potential for how much MONEY it can cost the MFG...

I just bought a spectrum gtb last week, and it already burned up, never got the chance to even race it just put it in the car, Had alot of problem's getting the one touch setup to work, then finaly it smoked... don't know what happen but that's poor quality!! I know there is a bad one for every so many made but it does seem to happen more often than not, funny thing is I have alway's used novak since I have been racing and had no problems till now, so I figured that I would try a LRP for a change.

I see your point, but completely disagree. Judging by what I see here and what others have told me I would classify quality and service as.....

Novak
Quality - Was good, but hearing bad things lately, hope they are flukes
Service - EXCELLENT

LRP
Quality - Bad
Service - Inconsistent

These failures are not "Pushing the Envelope" failures. A pushing the envelope failure is one that results in somewhat reduced lifetime. For example you expect your speedo to provide optimum perforamnce for 1 year, but it only does it for 3 months.

Failures where you take a product out of the package, install it (properly), and it starts on fire 30 seconds into its first use is a gross manufacturing defect. A defect such as missing component, incorrect component, solder bridge etc. When a failure like that leaves the factory it is totally unacceptable even if it only happens once. But all you have to do is look at these boards to see it happens to them a lot and we are only a tiny slice of the whole racing community.

If you went to the store and came home with a new DVD player and you plugged it in and it started on fire and burnt you would you say.....

"Sometimes people treat DVD players differently and lots of people are happily enjoying their DVD players. Sure it's a small inconvenience when your DVD player starts on fire, but it might cost these DVD player companies a lot of money if they have to provide players that don't occasionally start on fire."

I have a really really hard time believing you'd make that statement if it was your DVD player that was on fire, so you'll have to explain to me why it's ok for a RC car manufacturer.

Tekin has took it time to release but when it is released will it be legal to run in the BRL and will run the novak Brushless motors? i know that the tekin is sensorless but it will it run sensored motors

BUT EVERYONE LOVES A NICE WARM FIRE:drunk: , The LRP i had quit working the first time i used it (didn't catch fire but was wicked hot) , the company replaced it ,and then I sold the new one . Didnt trust it anymore. The Novak unit I bought so far has worked with an issue(2 weeks of racing on it).

That has been discussed if you wanted to search a little.
Will it be legal? they haven't submitted it for approval and there is waiting period, so at this point no.

Will it run the Novak motors? Yes

Maybe this is why TEKIN is taking so long to release their product...

Taking forever to release something is by no means an indication of improved quality. The only thing it indicates is they had design issues and/or they have a lack of resources in either money or people. neither of those things bodes well for quality, but no one can know one way or another until there is a product out there.

...what I find so funny is EVERYBODY is concerned about the LIPO batteries catching fire...yet we've seen what...nearly a dozen ESC's catch fire or come really close to it in the last 2 months?

I don't care if it's NIMH, LIPO or a ESC failure...I think we need to make sure to take FIRE Safety at the Races...and there should be plenty of FIRE Saftey equipment on hand...and 1st aid kits.

(pat, I fully agree with YOU on the quality control issues...but I'm an EX G.M. auto technician...I'm use to seeing product FAILURE from the MFG...w/o having it taken care of before a PRODUCT is shipped/sold)

A real car compared to a speedo is apples to oranges. That being said even on a real car which has orders of magnitude more parts and complexity the rate of failure for a brand new car is much much lower than on a brand new LRP speedo.

I design automotive sensors, at least the mechanical parts of them. These would be much closer to analogous to a speedo. A plastic case, a PCB, some board components and some wires as the basic compoents to be assembled. The design may be quite complicated (at least to me I suck at circuits), but putting it together is far from rocket science.

If an automaker finds out we have high fallout internally it sucks. If we have multiple failures get out of the factory and they fail at an automakers assembly line or at a Tier 1 it can be a NIGHTMARE and if they get assembled into vehicles and leave the factory it can be a NIGHTMARE. If they are safety critical or could cause an injury a recall WILL be mandatory and if someone actually gets hurt it WILL end up in court. Keep in mind here we are only talking maybe a couple parts out of a million.

That is why I just don't understand the "eh whatever" attitude in response to these things not only failing, but doing it in an awfully dangerous way.

This is starting to worry me! I just got a new LRP this past weekend. I was planning on getting the GTB but after talking to just about every one in the hobby shop they sold me on the LRP. This is coming from a very strong Novak supporting shop. They said it was the most sought after speedo at the NATS. I'm not sure if I should even install it in my new car. This is my return to elec. racing, and would hate to smoke my new car the first time out.

So with all the talk about catching on fire which one should I buy? Novak or LRP. I probably won't run nothing over a 10.5 but primarily a 17.5?

Do you need all the heatsinks and fans for both of them?

Thanks,
Fireball

I have and run both.

The NOVAKS I run are the original GTB's. I run them with NO Fan - 2 of the 3 run the heatsink, the 3rd one runs a custom cover from Randy at BigBoysToys. (Eventially, I'll change the other 2 to Randy's covers too)

The LRP Comp has no heat sink, nor fan....I love both once I figured out the LRP.

The GTBs to me are much, much easier to set up with the one touch setup.

Hopefully what ever the problems are...they will soon be fixed, and no longer be an issue...

I,ve had a LRP Sphere Competition in my Pro 3 since Febuary I,ve ran brushed stock and 19t with it but mostly 13.5 brushless TQd and Won or last FOCAR race never have had a problem with it.
Last weekend I ran the same speed control in my T4 with a Lipo/10.5 brushless set up, again no problems and truck was Fast.
I kinda wonder if these racers burning up two or three ESCs in a row dont have some other kinda of issue going on???

I can tell you from personal experience that when I blew my LRP that there was nothing new that I have to done to the car since last winter. It sat in my Pro 3 all summer, I ran it Saturday here in Omaha and went to Vinton to race and it poof... I just opened up my tool box and it still stinks. I had an 06 version that was a common occurance last year but somehow mine survived the brl and all winter season.

But the only other thing i have heard is that LRP customer service can be a little on the slow side, And then you try to call but no one answers the call. At least that has been my experience.

Yo, Kenny. If you want to wait and decide what ESC to buy, I got a Novak SS+ you can borrow or a GTB if Wade doesn't use it. Actually I got a LRP Sphere on the way if you want to throw that in your car and see if we can get it to smoke.

As for heatsinks and fans, I don't think there needed for 4-cell racing. That's why Novak came out with the GTB 4-cell version, not sure if you knew about that. The 6 cell one had a big heatsink and fan, which is what I ran, but I took the fan and heatsink off cuz it's huge with that on there. Gonna try the car in brushed stock this week, c ya.

Tommy Thanks for the offer. But last time I borrowed a tekin G9 and that went up in smoke. Do you remeber last season in the 12th scale when that one caught on fire?
My luck I would catch one on fire.

It's not really any harder than any other LRP speed control. Being that I have never had a previous LRP control, all the ONE STEP ESC's I've had are Novak... it did confuse me a little,,,then I got it programmed in LIPO mode, and could not figure out how to get it out (Before I realized it was in LIPO mode...the thing kept shutting down on me under load - once I realized WHY and HOW to put it in 4 cell mode - it's been great)

I just have to point out the Irony of FIREBALL being concerned about things catching on Fire :p
I,ve never ran a fan but I do run the heatsink that comes with the ESC. I havent had any problems setting up the LRP and have played around alot with the multitude of settings, pretty much have gone back to the default settings now.

I had an LRP 07 lock the motor up while coming down the front stretch two weeks ago. It then proceeded to start smoking. That was the 3rd battery through it. 5th battery on the motor. I hope that was an isolated incident.

I do have the 07 edition spedo. changed the mode setup to the second mode { red light flashing} then selected the profile I wanted, then turned spedo off, But I then turned the spedo back on to check it and press the mode button for three sec. and the mode went back the factory seting { yellow light flashing} is this normal??? or is the mode setting I choose still set?? don't know if I am doing this right or not. This is the first lrp I've owned, I've always had novak, the novak i know will show you what profile you are on till u changed it.

What happens if you miswire the 3 phases to the motor. The car ran 8 sec laps instead of 6 sec laps. We brought the car in, rewired the motor phases and tried it again, still slow, this was with a 10.5 motor.

We replace the speed control and the motor and ran the car and the speed was ok.

Which did we hurt or will it be both?

you have to hit the mode button like 2 more times I think or until it come out of the mode setting feature so it will be saved before you turm it off.
