View Full Version : BSG: Razor
JerseyPhoenix 10-03-2007, 02:55 PM As most people will avoid the Flash Gordon post about as much as they will the actual show, I just wanted to warn the BSG fans that Sci-Fi will be showing "mini's" they call "Flashbacks" about a young Adama during FG's till the premier in Nov.
Here's the link for more info
http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/razor
According to the site "All the flashback clips will be available on SCIFI.COM immediately after broadcast."
Might be safer just to catch them there...FG is atrocious
El Gato 10-03-2007, 03:28 PM Thanks! I was avoiding the FG thread because... well, I'm not really interested in FG.
Zombie_61 10-03-2007, 10:12 PM Anyone else think Sci-Fi did this because it was the only way they could get anyone to watch Flash Gordon?
dreamer 2.0 10-03-2007, 10:29 PM EDIT: Dangit, too much FG/BSG confusion between threads!
Suffice it to say I won't be seeing those Razor teasers.
El Gato 10-03-2007, 11:19 PM But they will eventually be available at scifi.com...
Zombie - Yes, I had the same thought.
John O 10-04-2007, 11:27 AM I saw an ad for the Razor flashbacks during FG and thought SCI-FI was tansparently desperate to whore their best show in the service of their worst.
FWIW, I swear I saw a TOS Cylon Raider attacking a battlestar (I'd assume, the Pegasus) - I could be wrong.

We are talking about "flashbacks" to Bill Adama's early career as a pilot...
CaptFrank 10-05-2007, 01:22 AM I have avoided Flash Gordon from the beginning.
It is soooo bad.
I had no idea SciFi was showing these "flashbacks" from
Battlestar Galactica.
I swear I saw a TOS Cylon Raider attacking a battlestar (I'd assume, the Pegasus) - I could be wrong.
Are these clips on SciFi's website yet? This might be worth
the six hour download time for me. (Dial-up, y'know.) :( :p
Trek Ace 10-05-2007, 04:11 AM The old Cylon Raiders are flying around without their engines powered up. Maybe the youngsters at the animation shop never saw the old show to know any better.
jay_barnes 10-05-2007, 07:22 AM Actually if you look on some versions of the promo you can see they *do* in fact have the engines glowing, I think it was the longer version of the commercial. The first one I saw the old Raiders did not have the engine exhaust glow - wonder if the reason they were using the two different versions is they were using incomplete cgi shots to get the promos done?
justinleighty 10-05-2007, 03:20 PM The old Cylon Raiders are flying around without their engines powered up. Maybe the youngsters at the animation shop never saw the old show to know any better.
Of course, the old show had those pretty clouds flying out of the back ends of the Vipers, so they certainly have been somewhat judicious about what they use and don't use.
At any rate, there are at least two shots with multiple old Raiders in them; I wonder if Husher will be flying alongside any Mk1 Vipers? It's not out of the realm of possibility, since we saw one in the Galactica museum during the mini (next to the old Raider).
El Gato 10-08-2007, 01:04 AM Watched the first flashback on scifi.com. I was was surprised to see that the Galactica had no more armor then than it does now.
Griffworks 10-08-2007, 03:07 PM That's because we see her as the CGI folks designed her - the whole "armor was taken off and used on other vessels" thing was never intended to be the case. Likely, some studio rep decided that there was missing armor plating so jumped to a conclusion.
Logically speaking, it makes no sense. If that armor was recently stripped off of Galactica as those folks'd have you believe, why are there all those AAA guns in those trenches? If they were going to strip her down and then retire her, would they have really put working guns in those places?
Instead, what was intended was for those guns to have been there all along - or since her last refit/overhaul - and that she's got the same armor she had for several years prior to her "recent" retirement decision. The guns being in the trenches makes sense from a tactical standpoint, as any nukes or other high-yield explosives blasts would "roll over" the trench, keeping the guns intact or at the very least minimize the damage they might take and keep the number of damaged weapons at a minimum. Were those same weapons on a smooth surface and a nuke (or other high-yield missile/bomb) went off near them they'd take out dozens all at once.
Regardless, I can't get the flashbacks to load up here. :(

Nothing new here. That's a practice that occurs in other networks, not just scifi. For years NBC exploited the 8:30 pm time slot between Friends and Seinfeld to launch crappy comedies that could not generate any ratings if they weren't in that coveted time slot. UPN forced Berman/Braga to rename "Enterprise" into "Star Trek: Enterprise" to generate interest among Trekkies.
That's because we see her as the CGI folks designed her - the whole "armor was taken off and used on other vessels" thing was never intended to be the case. Likely, some studio rep decided that there was missing armor plating so jumped to a conclusion.
Not that I'm debating, Jeff, but my surprise wasn't so much about the rumor that they "stripped her to retire her" but more that I would've thought a battlewagon would have more armor to help during wartime that could be removed later during peacetime. But now that I'm thinking about it, it doesn't make sense since the peace between the Colonials and the Cylons was an uneasy one. If you're under constant threat of war, you'd keep your vehicles in a constant state of alert. In an ideal setting, of course.
Regardless, I can't get the flashbacks to load up here.
I'll see what I can do and send you a DVD once all flashbacks are done.
spe130 10-08-2007, 04:23 PM Yeah, the "ribbed" look makes tactical sense. It might limit the field of fire from the guns, but it also minimizes damage to the underlying structure.
Griffworks 10-08-2007, 05:38 PM I'll see what I can do and send you a DVD once all flashbacks are done.
That'd be awesome, Jose! You rawk! I'll definitely owe you a couple beers (or libation of your preference - El Patron, anyone?) at WF09! :D
terryr 10-08-2007, 08:17 PM There are several BSG Razor clips at Youtube.
El Gato 10-20-2007, 05:03 PM What, no comments on flashback 3? The music was kind of "off" but the visuals were stunning. The old Cylon Raider looks awesome!
terryr 10-20-2007, 07:41 PM Old Raider and old Basestar, but I was thinking there should be some older viper type fighter. Atmosphere fight manuevers were off. You can do that stuff in space but not in air.

jheilman 10-20-2007, 11:18 PM Just watched for the first time on youtube. Cool. The thing that stuck with me was hearing the screams from Columbia over the comm as she disintegrated.

Same here. It reminded me of the "radio chatter" in Serenity as they head through Reaver space. Very eerie. Well, I guess we now know the Columbia listed as destroyed in the miniseries was definitely a newer battlestar.
I, too, wished we saw a few Mk1 Vipers in the fray, but we may see them yet.

Jets with thrust vectoring on the engines can make some pretty crazy maneuvers...
dgtrekker 10-23-2007, 01:08 AM Well I just watched the first 3 eps. on scifi, like the retro Cylon raiders & baseships and the referece to Gun on Ice Planet Zero.
El Gato 10-27-2007, 05:40 PM Cool to see a classic Cylon Centurion back in action. And those who lamented that they didn't use the old flashing eye sound effect for the new Centurions should find comfort now. Granted, it's not entirely the same, but it's a good homage to the classic show (similar to the updated laser gun sound effects for the old raiders in last week's episode).
For those who weren't convinced before, Adama was a *really* bad ass mofo in his younger days.
I do find it frustrating the episodes are only a little over 2 minutes long and you have to wait a week to see the next installment.
CaptFrank 10-27-2007, 08:53 PM I do find it frustrating the episodes are only a little over 2 minutes long and you have to wait a week to see the next installment. One wouldn't want the episodes to be too long, or they would
cut into the running time of that quality show "Flash Gordon". :) :drunk:
spe130 10-27-2007, 09:02 PM "Flash Gordon's" running time has been extended by three or four minutes to accommodate the Razor Flashbacks, making it fun for anyone trying to record Stargate: Atlantis.
CaptFrank 10-27-2007, 09:19 PM
So. That's why the season premier got cut off at the end!
Stupid Flash Gordon!!
El Gato 10-27-2007, 10:28 PM Makes you wish they'd cut the running time for ECW... oh wait, that's the other thread
Eric K 10-28-2007, 01:38 AM Nope, I'd be happy if they cut into Flash Gordon. It's played merry hob with my TV recording.
fluke 10-28-2007, 02:09 AM OK....That last one just was awesome! ....a bit on the comic book adventure 'hero' type of thing but still it rocked! ....and yes it was cool to see the old toasters and ships again.
justinleighty 10-30-2007, 02:14 PM Yeah, something about the centurion looked more menacing than they ever appeared in TOS. Maybe it was something about the range of motion. It was pretty cool, though.
Dave Hussey 10-30-2007, 02:45 PM Is there a clip with the old centurions? I've watched one, two and three on YouTube but dodn't see any of the old fellas.
Huzz
El Gato 10-30-2007, 03:55 PM Huzz - It's the latest wepisode (I'm watching them online, so the name is more appropriate), I think #4 that has the old toasters.
Speculation - I think why the look more menacing is that they're slimmer... or appeared to be more slim. The old series had guys in suits, so they were bulkier and more cumbersome. I think the new old centurions are CGI, so they're more proportional to humans and have greater range of motions.
spe130 10-30-2007, 04:00 PM Spoilerish!
The art that I've seen shows that there are (at least) three versions of the classic toaster - the gold command toaster, the slim pilot toaster, and the classic bulky infantry toaster. After all, a pilot doesn't need the same heavy armor as a foot solider - in fact, the weight would be counterproductive.
Dave Hussey 10-31-2007, 09:01 AM Thanks!
Is wepisode 4 on YouTube? Sci Fi blocks Canadians from viewing the clips on their site.
Huzz
Dave Hussey 10-31-2007, 09:39 AM Found it!
Bad Cylon!! BAD CYLON!! LOL!
Huzz
El Gato 10-31-2007, 11:34 AM Sci Fi blocks Canadians from viewing the clips on their site.
See, what you guys need to do is give up the ghost that you're a separate country. Just annex yourselves to the US. Not only would you get scifi, but you would then have access to our wonderful, wonderful health care system...
terryr 10-31-2007, 11:37 AM The canadian dollar is worth more now, so it may be the other way.
justinleighty 10-31-2007, 11:46 AM Speculation - I think why the look more menacing is that they're slimmer... or appeared to be more slim. The old series had guys in suits, so they were bulkier and more cumbersome. I think the new old centurions are CGI, so they're more proportional to humans and have greater range of motions.
I think that's part of it. I think the other aspect is that the "eye" was redesigned; they now look like they have a furrowed brow, giving them more of the appearance of a grimace. The TOS toaster had a uniform chrome border around the eye slit; the CGI redesign's border is narrow in the center.
It was interesting to see the three CGI designs in an interview with Gary Hutzel. They did a good job.
The other cool thing was to learn from Gary Hutzel's interview that Rob Bonchune did the TOS Basestar on his own time for free, just because he figured fans would like it. He is one of the most talented and coolest CGI artists out there. He was a great resource around here for Enterprise, and I'm glad to see he's still being a great guy, going the extra mile for the fans.

Yep, with you there!!!!
OK....That last one just was awesome! ....a bit on the comic book adventure 'hero' type of thing but still it rocked! ....and yes it was cool to see the old toasters and ships again.
Yeah I wouldn't mind to see a series set here, it could really open up a whole new set of possibilities!
Dave Hussey 10-31-2007, 02:45 PM Hey El Gato and Terryr - I love you guys so not a problem for me!
But did you know how badly we are getting hosed up here even though our dollars are at the same value right now? For an eye opener, go to Honda.com and Honda.ca and price the same Accord EX-L and see the $6,000 extra that Canadians must pay for the same car. And Honda won't let its US dealers sell to Canadians. And if the Canadian guy manages to get one somehow, Honda Canada refuses to honor the warranty.
In fact, the same money that will fetch you an Accord in Canada gets you a Mercedes Benz C Class in the US.:freak:
Lovely.
Now that my rant is over, back to BSG. Hey - after seeing Adama's interaction with the Cylon in wepisode 4, I'd like to introduce him to some of the folks responsible for Canadian car pricing! ;) I'm kidding of course!

fluke 11-01-2007, 04:35 AM If BSG were to continue...I would like to see it done like this:
With the current directors, producers & writers...start with the Robots rebelling and the original wars starting....that could be interesting.
SIDE NOTE:
Got my 1/24 scale Raptor kit today...HOLY COW! its huge, amazing and it's more like a stryrene kit than resin...some clean up but NO long hours of ...REPAIRS, HOLE FILLING and guessing .."what is that part?"...or more like "What was it meant to be?" Well worth every penny!! It may not be too late to get one!

Thats what I think too.

Looking forward to seeing your work.
beatlepaul 11-01-2007, 12:27 PM I just watched this clip! Veeery, veery cool! I would like to see them "bring back" so to speak,Dirk Benedict's Starbuck somehow.Yeah, I know, It's campy, blah,blah... I also think that Mr. Benedict hates the new Galactica.(I COULD BE WRONG). It could be cool, if they did it right. Maybe finally find him on that planet he was stranded on......Just daydreaming my friends!
terryr 11-02-2007, 09:26 PM There's a bootleg copy of the entire Razor movie online somewhere. Generally good reviews.
fluke 11-02-2007, 10:31 PM Is there a new 'Flashback' tonight?
fluke 11-04-2007, 02:53 AM #5
This makes sense why Adama reacted the way he did with that human model suffering with radiation problems during the season opener.
http://spoilertv-bsg.blogspot.com/2007/11/razor-flashback-5.html
Interesting.
Jim NCC1701A 11-05-2007, 06:24 AM There's a bootleg copy of the entire Razor movie online somewhere. Generally good reviews.
So that's how my workmate got it. Why bother waiting until the 24th?
It's only (well, the copy I was given is) in AVI, but it's still a pretty good reproduction.
You guys are gonna love Razor when you see it - and I didn't even have to sit through Flash Gordon... :D
Cheers!
Jim.
CaptFrank 11-05-2007, 07:08 AM Is this the one SciFi said they were going to sell as a DVD?
justinleighty 11-05-2007, 12:06 PM They're running it as a 2-hour movie on the 24th, then releasing it on DVD shortly thereafter. The DVD will be cut differently, though, and will incorporate the flashbacks.
