I have two questions...

How do you remove tampos?

...and how do you cut things off? I.E. roofs off to make a convertible.

For tampos I use fingernail polish remover and Q-tips. But Lummox had a part number for carburater cleaner I'd like to try. A dremel tool or pencil grinder for cutting. Small cutting wheels and rotary files (with safety glasses).

I'd like to reiterate what Bob has suggested, and add that "Acetone Free" nail polish remove works great for tampoe removal, some times the regular NP remover can haze the paint or even remove it to metal.

As to removing parts of a casting, there are many, the best way is a Jewelers Saw with .010-.015 blades..Usually found on e-bay for $7-and up..This tool is a must for cutting, as you advance in your customizing projects you will need it for things like opening doors, hoods, trunks, hatchbacks, and then I think The rotary tool.."Dremel with cord" is also a must have. It also does a lot of intrecate stuff on all kinds of material.

GTO,
I use straight Acetone. WalMart paint supplies aisle.
1 of my recent Convention cars (white 63 split window) was made by wiping the blue competition stripes off the roof to apply a "California Dreaming" decal.

Same thing with removing part of the tampo on the side of the FE Silver '58 T-Bird.

A liberal soaking of a Q-Tip allows the Acetone to do most of the work and requires but wiping away residue with the Q-tip itself.

Can't say much more than Jeff. I will say one of the hardest things for me to try to do is to get the right side to look like the left side...Or visa versa. One trick is to use existing lines like a door lines or where the roof pillars meet the body etc. to guage where you want to make the cut. Though you can't always cut directly on one of those lines you can use them to S.W.A.G. where the cuts will be made. This starting point will make it much easier when the J&B process starts.

With all due respect to the very accomplished customizers here,
I'm confused. Jnkfleet says acetone free npr, and Caddypat says STRAIGHT ACETONE!!!!
What's going on here?
All I can say is by far I've had the best luck with Carb cleaner, it works awesome!
But I have never tried non-assatone npr or straight acetone.

Sorry if I caused confusion for youz guyz...
Allow Me to explain..
In the 30+ years I have been doing customs, "I have tried every known method of tampoe removal", and all I'm telling you guys is this is my way above all others that's all."

You can do it any way You choose, but if you try ithis, you may see more clearly what I'm offering you as a easy & slightly lower the odds of bad things happening.

We all learn that there is no 100% methods for this, often it just comes to trial & error, luck of the method we choose.

Whether NP with acetone, or acetone straight, do not breathe the stuff. Work outside if you can.

the awesome thing about carb cleaner is it's very forgiving as far as "chrome" trim.
Check out this car. It used to have a black top. I still had to be carfull,
but I think you'll agree it did a good job in leaving the silver paint behind.
With customizing little cars or 1/1, you can't be afraid of trying new or different ways. Give it a shot!

One of the brands I have is Napa part #8700, but I've used others with the same results.

Well... I'm going with carb cleaner. I just took the bird off Daisy's jeep and lost a good bit of paint. It should work out in the end.

Yep. with acetone.
I'll give it to my kid. She can do her nails with it.

That sounds good - make sure you show it when you're done!

Lummox, I found the carb spray at Napa and it works great. Thanks! This isn't a good photo but the Falcon Delivery came up really nice. All the flat black is gone and I was able to leave behind the silver trim I wanted.

You still have to be carefull around the silver, but NPR would have taken it right off.

I have tried both acetone free NPR and the carb cleaner. I gave the NPR to my mother and will never touch another casting with it. Carb cleaner is faster, more affective, and safer on the paint, no doubt about it! Just take the car apart if you have to get too close to windows. I haven't messed up a window but it can happen, I've fogged windows with the NPR and the carb cleaner will do the same.

I would highly suggest the carb cleaner, worst thing that will happen is you won't like it (can't see it though) and have a product to use on your 1:1 car.

Lummox thanks for discovering this new method.

It makes me happy that the carb cleaner has been sucsessfull for all that have tried it.
I totally discovered it by accident. A can of carb cleaner was just sitting there and I
just grabbed it and BLAMMO!!! It worked!
