View Full Version : Cobra Daytona fans, I need some help here
CarCrazyDiecast 09-28-2007, 12:34 AM A new Yat Ming white 1965 Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe (1/18)model was given to me by a friend, so I had no choice in the color or the brand. The car's lines are very nice; however, the model appears rather bland and uninteresting to me. Since I am not very knowledgeable about the 1:1 cars, I am seeking some advice and tips on detailing it from those who might have done them.
My model is quite different than the one in the picture which is apparently an Exoto. My model has no black outlines of the head lights, the tires are not lettered, there are no graphics above the side vents behind the front wheels, and the side windows appear not to be blackened.
What I would like to do is get the model to "pop" with some details that are accurate and appealing. The wheels look very bland to me. Perhaps this is the way the 1:1 car's were, I don't know.
If you are familiar with or have detailed out a white Yat Ming Shelby Cobra Daytona coupe, I would really appreciate your help in telling/showing what you did to it.
Any help will be appreciated.
THANKS!

Scott Moen 09-28-2007, 07:53 AM Good Day,
You can visit the website below for some more information on the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes.

In my humble opinion, the Cobra Daytona Coupes are one of the most BEAUTIFUL cars ever made. I have had the pleasure of seeing three out of the six built in person. I've also seen the 1 of 1 prototype 427 Super Cobra Daytona Coupe in person. UNBELIEVABLE ! ! Good luck on your project.

ClearHooter 09-28-2007, 11:26 AM During that era There was very little advertising on sports racing cars. That's one of the things I particularly like about that time. The car's lines could be seen and they weren't rolling bill boards. While white lettered tires were one of the first things I can recall that resembled advertising, many of these cars didn't even have that done to 'em. Scott and I hold the same opinon. The Daytona has some of the most desirable lines ever to be drawn for any car ever made. Maybe the most. At one time I knew where this car competed and who drove it. The one I've got is a "Road Signature" and meets most of the criteria you described about yours. The one thing I can say that was common with most that I've seen is the black rubber seals around the windows and head lamps. If your looking for accuracy get online and call the marque up. There are loads of shots either current or period. I personally wouldn't do anything to it other than open some vent work up, blacken the seals, black wash the grill works on the lower fenders and cowl, blacken the exhaust ports and detail the engine and interior compartment. Some discoloration of the exhausts around the front wheels as well as some brake dust on the wheels would add some realism. You can do that with some tan and dark gray pastel chalk. I've said many a time here and elsewhere. Probably to the point that everyones sick and tired of it. "You just can't improve on perfection."
CarCrazyDiecast 09-28-2007, 11:58 AM Really appreciate the response to this post.
Thanks, ClearHooter, for the specific particulars. That is a BIG help to me. I will need to do some research as to the colors, etc, in the interior and engine compartments, but the other issues you mentioned shouldn't be too difficult to do.
Thanks again!

I'll dig some up and scan them today or this weekend. Will post as soon as I scan them

ClearHooter 09-28-2007, 01:59 PM The main thing is to think austeer. Remember its a '60's pure racing car that you could drive on the street.... In theory not reality.
Scott Moen 09-28-2007, 02:21 PM Hi All,
OK, for your viewing pleasure ... here is the 1 of 1 prototype 427 Super Cobra Daytona Coupe. These shots were taken at Road America in July '97 at the SAAC 22 convention. The car was originally started in the mid 60's, but sat unfinished until someone came across it in the early '80's and decided to finish it. They were able to get Pete Brock to help them complete the car the way he originally wanted it done. VERY COOL ! Sorry I don't have a shot of the car with the front end on the car. I'll have to do some more digging :D

Lastly, here is a shot of my 1:18 Exoto Cobra Daytona Coupes. Sorry the picture is so small. they are hard to photograph up close when they are in the display case.
