View Full Version : Bionic Woman
fluke 09-27-2007, 02:29 AM OK.....I'm still not too sure what I think...it wasn't brain food and it was kinda weak....but I really dig the fact that Aron Douglas and Katee Sackhoff are in it - so far. ( Chief and Starbuck from Galactica ) I was not in the know ...so that was a treat.
It might get better.
What did you think?
John P 09-27-2007, 07:45 AM I enjoyed. l'll keep watching.
Mary thought it was too silly to waste any more time on, though. I guess it's a girl thing. Or the show is a guy thing. Or I just like to watch the things on girls and Mary doesn't. :D
Dave Hussey 09-27-2007, 07:58 AM Ah,"The Bionic Cat Fight".
To be honest, I was a bit underwhelmed. I guess Dr. Who has spoiled me. Better story lines and the Doctor and Martha are highly engaging and have real chemistry. And Marthe's smile and the twinkle in her eyes light up my tv room!
And let me get this straight WRT to the Bionic Woman.
Doctor: You were in a terrible accident and lost your arm and both legs.
Patient: Oh no! My life is ruined.
Doctor: Not to worry - we've given you new limbs that look and feel just like your old ones and are much better. You wouldn't know unless we told you.
Patient: You jerk!!!
Wattupwitdat? Shouldn't it be "Thank you! Thank you so much!!"?

Arronax 09-27-2007, 08:36 AM None of the characters reached out and grabbed me as being really interesting. I may give this another episode before removing it from my must see list.

dreamer 2.0 09-27-2007, 11:56 AM Couldn't stay awake, taped BW and the 10:30 repeat of The War. Will try to see it later today.
Ohio_Southpaw 09-27-2007, 12:30 PM I think it has potential, so I'll give it a few more episodes before I decide yea/nay. Did anybody else catch on that one small bit of sound from the medical equipment during the surgery sounded just like that from the opening of The 6 Million Dollar Man?
fluke 09-27-2007, 01:02 PM I wouldn't know....the other thing that drove us nuts is ....and maybe it was just our local provider but at times we had small bits of total sound interruption...very anoying. Yes I agree...thank the Gods for shows like Dr. Who, Galactica and Heros.
Despite having Miguel Ferrer in it, I didn't see anything worth missing "Mythbusters" for. I liked the following show "Life" much better.
David.
aurora fan 09-27-2007, 01:37 PM BW was ok but if bionic surgery is this simple and effective, where do we sign up? Super fast healing, no scars, super strength, and super skills? All benefits, no drawbacks? People will be turning in their healthy limbs for this technology! (as Katie Sackoff did) Truth is, this show seems too silly to be taken seriously and should probably be done in a campy style, but I'll stay tuned!
Eric K 09-27-2007, 01:43 PM I enjoyed. l'll keep watching.......
You laughed, you cried...It became a part of you.....:p
In all honesty, I thought I'd set my recorder to timer and it wasn't, so, i'll try NBC website to try and watch.....
John P 09-28-2007, 07:58 AM BW was ok but if bionic surgery is this simple and effective, where do we sign up?
You got 50 million bucks and a government security clearance?
aurora fan 09-28-2007, 01:31 PM The secret appears to be out! After the billionaires and millionaires get refitted with bionics, the technology will eventually trickle down to soldiers and other deserving amputees through universal health care. Bionic parts replacement heals faster than mending broken bones or ACL surgery, so this is obviously the way to go!
Dave Hussey 09-28-2007, 02:35 PM Didn't Katee wassername say she had replaced part of her chest with bionics? I have to ask - why would you want bionic gazoombas anyway?
Talk about pokin' yer eye out!:freak:
Hmmm. Perhaps its done so she can shoot the men right between the eyes? :jest:

beatlepaul 09-28-2007, 03:03 PM I am still waiting for a Six MillionDollar Man remake. I grew up in the 70's, And to most guys in my age range, regard Lee Majors as "THE MAN". I have read the Martin Caiden book"Cyborg" several times. For you guys ready to bash the show, READ THE NOVEL!!!If it was done today using the Novel more closely, It would be awesome. Of course people being what they are, can only remember the 'Bigfoot"Episodes, But like the Irwin Allen shows, the first season was great.
High Regards,
BEATLEPAUL
Admiral Nelson 09-28-2007, 03:06 PM Funny how she didn't have to learn to walk on the new legs. Too weird.
Dave Hussey 09-28-2007, 03:06 PM I recall reading the Caidin novel and it was pretty cool.
I agree that the initial pilot and the several subsequent TV movies were also a heck of a lot better than the resulting tv series.

Aside - I was watching "Wild West Tech" on History Channel, hosted by David Carradine. The subject was a union dispute in the old west that turned ugly, and how hired assassins used booby traps to kill some union officials.
Cut back to Carradine, who says "Glad we never had any violence like that in my union. Well, there was this one time we all voted to kick Lee Majors' butt..."
:freak:
beatlepaul 09-28-2007, 07:45 PM As ugly as David Carradine is, it looks like a union elected to kick his butt....several times.
Yuk,Yuk, Yuk.....
JeffG 09-28-2007, 09:56 PM A word to the wise: all that's fantasy or sci-fi is not always good. I'll stick to "House" and save my sci-fi for really good stuff-hopefully the upcoming season of Galactica. And if they start with much more of the piano music and 'deep' Cylon episodes they'll be on their way out too!
I'll give Bionic Woman another shot. The first episode didn't really grab me and Katie Sackoff who I think is great as Starbuck, seemed to be working way too hard to be 'mean'. Oh well, if it doesn't hook me next time, there's more to life than just sci-fi media.
dreamer 2.0 09-28-2007, 10:41 PM As much as I love a good gourmet meal, sometimes I want junk food.
This show is what I expected - wholly derivative, writing that's barely passable, but so far it's entertaining enough. No characters that are credible or (for the most part) sympathetic, but the story lines being set up may help on that count.
And may I say without violating Da Rulz, I'm all for anthrocytic jiggle.
Zombie_61 09-29-2007, 10:37 PM Despite having Miguel Ferrer in it, I didn't see anything worth missing "Mythbusters" for.Agreed. Miguel Ferrer was the only good thing about it. I gave it a sincere shot, but I was bored for the entire hour.
John P 09-30-2007, 08:50 AM Is Miguel playing Oscar Goldman?
wlemonds 09-30-2007, 11:58 AM Is Miguel playing Oscar Goldman?
IMBD.com says no, Jonas Bledsoe is his name.
That was one of the things that bugged me about this first episode. You got to at least introduce the character names, at least first names. I don't think we got her first name, Jamie, till half way through the episode.
SteveR 09-30-2007, 01:28 PM Is Miguel playing Oscar Goldman?Apparently, they didn't have the rights to the name:

That's a good thing.

Yeah, I couldn't helkp but notice that too. Very poor form, that.
El Gato 10-01-2007, 10:49 AM IT was entertaining enough. It's not that I was expecting high-caliber storylines. I mean, you go back and watch the original BW and it ain't Shakespeare. I was disappointed they didn't do the slo-mo and the tick-tick-tick sound effect...
Huzz- I thought the same thing when she said she replaced her chest. I guess there's no saggin' allowed when you're bionic.
Dave Hussey 10-01-2007, 12:48 PM Yup. One thing's fer sure - at least parts of the show are high calibre!!

Don't do no good if you can't see the schematics :p
John P 10-01-2007, 10:30 PM Once again, let me recommend the anime "009-1," wherin the cyborg spy chicks actually have machine-gun-boobies. :freak:
Eric K 10-01-2007, 11:04 PM So did the FemBots in Austin Powers
dreamer 2.0 10-04-2007, 12:12 AM Wow. The writing in just the pre-credits teaser alone is a whole episode's worth of bad. A huge drop in quality from last week...and last week wasn't good.
I don't know if I can last the whole hour.
Starts with Jaimie saying she wants nothing to do with these people. Didn't the last one end with her saying to the same boss guy, essentially, "Okay, let's see there this goes"? So, character continuity to rival the last two Star Trek shows, nice.
aurora fan 10-04-2007, 04:41 AM I didnt care for it. Wont watch again unless theres nothing else on.
John P 10-04-2007, 07:53 AM It's something to watch until Mythbusters comes back with new eps. It's not making me gag exactly, but there sure is some whoppingly bad writing.
wlemonds 10-04-2007, 12:58 PM I noticed they added the new version of the bionic sound effect when she was fighting with the guy in the town.
dreamer 2.0 10-04-2007, 10:01 PM I hate to keep harping on BermaTrek as the point of comparison for how not to do a tv show, but I'm seein' it here again. Whoever's writing this series obviously has no life experiences to draw upon either in writing believable, consistent characters or in crafting a credible world for them to inhabit.
Geez, and I thought early on that there would be a few good writers involved. Guess David Eick wasn't that big a part of what made BSG work.
dreamer 2.0 10-11-2007, 03:17 PM Anyone bother to watch last night?
Actually...I liked it. Situations are still badly drawn (Bionic babysitter...and you can switch off electronics by thinking real hard?), but Katee Sackhoff kicks the show to life every second she's on. For a psychotic, I'm finding her the most sympathetic character on BW.
John P 10-12-2007, 07:44 AM I'm trying to figure out why that fight with the terrorists lasted more than three seconds. Two bionic women, one of them with no problem killing, against five normal guys? What was with all the kung fu? Not one of the bad guys should have been able to get up after one kick. Heck, once Jamie asked Sarah for help, I expected five dead guys in five seconds.
Bruce Bishop 10-12-2007, 03:04 PM So were those guys real terrorists or just crooks hired by Sarah to get Jaime to ask for her help and supposedly trust her?
dreamer 2.0 10-12-2007, 09:43 PM John, this is standard Hollywood combat choreography. You're supposed to be mindlessly impressed, not think!
I assume the bad guys were after the kid. Having them be part of a ploy by Anthros is a few steps of thought farther than the writers seem capable of.
drewid142 10-12-2007, 10:47 PM I didnt care for it. Wont watch again unless theres nothing else on.
...so... is there anything else on?
aurora fan 10-13-2007, 10:13 AM The network picked a decent time slot because not much competition for Jamie. I'm catching up on season one of The Unit at this time. Thanks for asking.
John P 10-13-2007, 10:42 AM ...so... is there anything else on?
Mythbusters, when they come back with new shows. I'll probably stwitch over to MB and catch BW again in reruns. It ain't worth the effort of taping and finding time to watch.
Eric K 10-13-2007, 11:00 AM ...and you can switch off electronics by thinking real hard
Ummm, since it's a chip in her head and the entire system responds to her thoughts, that is not too much of a stretch. Although most of the rest of the series is so far.
John P 10-13-2007, 04:15 PM Bionic stretchmarks?
dreamer 2.0 10-13-2007, 08:43 PM Ummm, since it's a chip in her head and the entire system responds to her thoughts, that is not too much of a stretch. Although most of the rest of the series is so far.
Agreed on that last, anyway.
I dont know. My grasp of science was never that great, so maybe you're right. But her system would have been specifically designed to interface with her neural pathways, necessarily if they're to be useful - there has to be a flow back and forth. There's no need for that with a surveaillance chip, and I don't see them being obliging enough to allow her control over it. So, no on/off switch wired up for neural control. The chipwouldn't even need to be wired to her mind at all, it only needs to be plugged into the eye and ear hardware. So for her to shut it down without a neural connection just by visualizing it smacks of telekinesis, not bionics. I don't think they have any idea what they're writing about (maybe no more than I do, granted...)
I'm asking waaaay too much of this show, aren't I? :drunk:
Eric K 10-13-2007, 09:59 PM I'm asking waaaay too much of this show, aren't I? :drunk:
yes...methinks so...
Robert Hargrave 10-14-2007, 12:35 PM Go find a copy of the original book, Cyborg. Give it a read, it was great. Gave you lots of information, went through the whole learning to use his limbs, weapons and other add on parts Austin could be equiped with you also got a sence of his limitations. I have watched the first 3 stories and I'm very unimpressed with the story so far, the lack of story line on the reassembly of Miss J. One minute she's broken the next minute she is up and walking around kicking other cyborgs butts. The huge void about her abilities and weapons I'm sure is so writters can just add anything they want during the run of the show. Also don't get me going on the fact she has 50 million dollars worth of equipment inside of her, her secret is out and no one is watching over baby sister, to make sure she is safe from cybornetic kidnappers, OMG. Maybe if the producers gave out copies of Cyborg the book, and the writers could see some of the missions Steve took on, and how his bionics were used they may just come up with some good and realistic story lines. When jumping across a large void of buildings you must remember your hips, spine and one arm are not bionic. So when you come crashing down on that roof half a block away (even if you roll as miss J did on show #1) your velocity is still going to tear clothing and rip skin that makes contact with the roof, your spine and hip joints may snap from the G forces encountered. Yes I'm sure that somewhere during all the magic surgery they added shock absorbers and other stuff to explain all this. But in the book the bionic man could jump a good distance but nothing huge, and never jumped off a building landing flat footed on the street below to chase an escaping villan. But he did have a posion needle in his index finger, oxygen container in one leg, explosives in his forearm, was able to cut chain link with his fingers and last he used his brain, and could think his way out of dangerious situations. WOW what an idea, much better than running around from building to building waiting for help to arrive and bail you out, and why during the fight in the town with all the dead people, did Miss J use a closed fist on her B hand, she could have very easily used her hand with fingers extended and shoved it right through the guys skull ending any fight and all the punches she took on the spot. She can run 60 miles an hour, leap across wide voids but can't take off a foes head with one blow GEEEEEEEEZ. I'm done with the show unless they come up with some good writing and better plots.
