View Full Version : SpeedZone--S. Sioux City, Nebraska
BallisticBill 09-24-2007, 06:11 PM The SpeedZone in S. Sioux City, Nebraska is coming back.
Many racers from around the Midwest will probably remember the SpeedZone R/C track in S. Sioux City, Nebraska. This track was THE premier track during the late 90's.
The track will be located at the very same location and facility at Atokad Park. We have over 10,000 sq. feet of space. As a matter of fact, the driver stand is still there and the facility looks just as it did seven years ago when the doors were closed.
New CRC Ozite carpet has been ordered. The carpet will be permanent. The computer, track boards and everything needed to revive this track was all saved. There will be an onsite concession stand and hobby shop. Oval and Onroad racing. Oval run line is approx 175 feet. Carpet is 48 wide by 80 long
Racing will not be starting before Nov 1. We have corn to pick. Schedule will be announced at a later date but racing will be on Sunday. The track will also be used for testing since we have access whenever we wish. I am extremely interested in testing brushless/lipo combo's and I will be calling other track managers around the country for their input and sharing the results with the oval community. Lipo's IMO will be the the future. We may open the track on a weekday also for anyone that wants to practice. We will have a track website up and running soon.
More later,

Batman 09-24-2007, 09:03 PM I'm in just show me the schedule. Also would like to run lipo's to
MURDOCKRC 09-24-2007, 09:13 PM How about for now Batman I give the work scedule to get the place ready to race again:freak: .
Lipo batteries are going to be looked at very hard including testing of my own line of them with Windtunnel. My test packs in various sizes are on the way now and will be ready for testing upon the doors opening again. Looking forward to seeing old and new faces there. I have spent a few hours on the phone today and things look as though they could get off to a good start.
The absolute #1 goal is to have FUN and rebuild the great thing we had a while back. I have also been in contact with other race promoters looking at future possibilities for races.
Rob:thumbsup:  :woohoo:
ohiorcracer 09-24-2007, 09:43 PM I gotta make the trip from Ohio to run this track. It sounds like a great place to run with windtunnel products backing the racing scene.
Sonny B 09-25-2007, 12:41 AM Sounds like fun good luck guys.
B mullins 09-25-2007, 07:04 AM Hey Rob since you are starting a new track, have you thought about putting in a banked carpet oval? Kinda like the one they had at Sandhills? I am sure Sonny would love to add your track to the Brl next season..

Bring back them awesome cheese burgers thats the only reason i raced is to have an awesome burger their.
Dustin
BallisticBill 09-25-2007, 10:03 PM DustinB,
When the doors open again in about 30 days or so, we want it to be like we were all racing there just last week and not seven years ago. Even some of the decorations around the concession stand were still there. Even the menu was still hanging up. Kinda like a time warp thing when I walked into the building. Oh--- and your first double bacon cheeseburger in seven years from the Pit Stop concession is on me.
Jim,
I can get to Bloomington from here in one hour. Can you get to the Speed Zone that fast or am I faster?
Batman,
Looking forward to rubbing some Lexan with you again. I will be able to replace the decals for you now. New decal machine will arrive anyday now.
Have fun racin'
Bill M.
DustinB 09-25-2007, 10:08 PM diffently lookin forward to seeing the old place again had alot of fun their.
Dustin
jimmy24 09-26-2007, 10:57 AM Bill, That has to be in your Cessna
DustinB 09-26-2007, 03:57 PM Jimmy maybe Bill will come and pick you up on sundays and fly you to south sioux in his cessna :woohoo:
Batman 09-26-2007, 05:10 PM I'll be sure to have some stickers on the rear bumper for ya :jest:
BallisticBill 09-26-2007, 08:40 PM Jimmy,
Had to sell the Cessna to pay my RC bill!!!!! Actually Northwest Airlines, I believe, flys direct to Minneapolis from Sioux City. The way gas prices are I think flying ANYWHERE is cheaper than driving. By the way, one of the jokes around here is, especially around pilots, is the locator designation beacon for Sioux City--- SUX. I never liked to tell other pilots I was from Sioux City. I always got the comment "Oh, that SUX". Lotta people around here were PO'd when the FAA gave that designation to Sioux City. Anyway, the track is 2 miles from the airport as the bird flys. Google Earth and search ATOKAD PARK and you can see where the track is. Pan to the SE and you will see the airport.
Bryon,
The banked track idea is a great one. We just don't have the time to construct it. There used to be a half banked and half flat track in Omaha back in the 80's. Ask Ben about it. Now that was fun. It was called R C Speedway. And you gotta remember also----- I'm so old that when I was born they still thought the world was flat. I don't know no different.
Batman,
I have a whole bunch of stickers for your rear bumper. "I Just Got Passed By The Old Man Again"
Later,
Bill M.
MURDOCKRC 09-26-2007, 09:59 PM Does this place look like something seen before?
B mullins 09-26-2007, 10:43 PM Well Bill you sure dont drive like your from the stone age..dang the bad luck...lol
Keep giving Batman crap he needs all the love he can get..
Looks like alot of fun, if the girls B-ball lets up on Sundays then I will have to make a trip up there.
lumberjak 09-27-2007, 01:43 PM What oval classes are you guys thinking about? A trip from Omaha dos't sound like it would be too tough, more racing would be good for me.
MURDOCKRC 09-27-2007, 02:45 PM no doubt be running 13.5 and 10.5bl like we will be in Omaha. Most of the other locals I have spoke with are online at this time for the same thing. 17.5 with lipo has been brought up as well in addition to possibly a late model class for something different.
Myself and Bill will be slim for omaha in october with the farming going on but should be coming there in November sometime.
Road course classes have yet to be confirmed but I do know of a few planning on being there already
Look forward to seeing everyone there
Rob
DustinB 09-27-2007, 03:19 PM Will their be a sportsman or plex cup class for like the 17.5 with out the lipo? This is my first year for brushless and thats the class i was planning on running. Cause i am still kinda of a rookie but plan to make a few trips back.
thanks
DustinB 09-27-2007, 03:22 PM wow looks the same
JasonAB25 09-27-2007, 03:34 PM Rob, Looks really good and permanent too, that would be really nice. It's too bad i live in IL now. I'll try and make it over sometime. Good luck with it and if you have some extra space throw a dirtoval in there and make that late model thing really take off:) Later.
Jason
BallisticBill 09-27-2007, 06:05 PM Dustin & Lumberjak
4 cell 17.5bl will be a class also. That is what I would suggest for you Dustin. Rob and I are going to test out these lipo's before we make a class. It is the coming thing for the future and will probably be popular in the 08-09 season. But for this year we will see. I'll run 4 cell 17.5 with either of you if no one else with that motor shows up. How's that sound?
Another thing as far as the lipo/brushless. I will be looking very seriously at the 21.5bl motor that Novak is just putting into production. We need something that is similiar to 4 cell brushed stock speed. I hope this is it in the lipo category. We shall see.
Later.
Bill M.
DustinB 09-27-2007, 09:02 PM Yea that would be great to race you Bill i hope you guys get the turn out like it was 7 yrs ago i plan to make as many races as possible i do have family in sioux city still. Bill you wont lap me to bad in that 17.5 will yea
jimmy24 09-28-2007, 09:26 AM Bill will you have a schedule up soon? I need to plan a once a month trip! also just my 2 cents on the lipo thing, At the local offroad track this summer they had 2 incidents of the battery rupture and starting on fire, you can not extinguish one of the batteries! It's like the (willy peter days of old) just my 2 cents. I love the facilities and can't wait race there, as for the airplane ride, that would be ok however this is NWA we are talking about my RC gear would up in Memphis. :freak:  C-ya soon
MURDOCKRC 09-28-2007, 11:26 PM Dustin: I dad beats up on ya to bad Ill flatten his tires.:D How does that sound
jimmy24: At this time the scedule is looking like a first week of november start. We will know more upon getting the carpet layed and go from there.
As for the lipo......at this time it is going to be testing only but there are some locals that ran them in offroad this year and liked it. So we have to consider all avenues here but lipo is coming. Saftey is an issue without a doubt but right now the sub c cells are not real safe either. Kind of a fine line we will have to walk with both from the safety standpoint.
R/C is going to have to choose a direction and this season will be a year that we all will have to make up our minds on a lot of things. Allowing only certain or one manufacture is not good at all in my opinion, cost factors, saftey, & etc. At the sped zone though it will work out to be as good as possible until that defined direction is determined.
Rob
DustinB 09-29-2007, 12:20 AM Rob i hope you can keep a good eye on him.
RACER185 09-30-2007, 10:10 PM Rob
Congrats on reopening the SpeedZone. I was reflecting on all the good times and great racing we had back in the 90's. You can count on seeing Mike and I there on Sundays and during the week too if you are there. Thumbs up on a track in Sioux City.
Jim
jimmy24 10-01-2007, 01:06 PM Rob, what days(Sat or Sun) are you going to run?
DustinB 10-01-2007, 01:08 PM Jimmy i think it said sunday but i am sure bill or rob will let us know I remeber 7yrs ago when i raced their they raced fridays and sundays that was a good time racing their and good food as well.
MURDOCKRC 10-01-2007, 01:38 PM Sunday will be race day. We still want to be able to make Omaha on saturday and as Dusty mentioned we did Sunday in the past and that worked good for everyone. Right now we are not looking at other days real hard unless turn out jumps up to where it would justify and if that should happen it would most likely be a week night instead of Fridays.
We are still flying by the seat of our pants but the carpet could be starting to go done next weekend:thumbsup: depending on my farm scedule and if we can be in the fields or not
I have to keep Friday open for Musky hockey you know:tongue: :woohoo:
As soon as the carpet is down we will put up a scedule. Im sure Ballisticbill will be doing that. I have enough on my plate so pops is handling that
BallisticBill 10-02-2007, 07:20 PM UPDATE: Recieved confirmation this morning that the new track carpet for the SpeedZone is in transit. It should be here the first of next week.
Race days will be Sundays. We are looking at every Sunday starting in November, but as soon as the carpet is down I will get a schedule posted. There are some two day events elsewhere that Rob and I may attend so those Sundays would not be on the schedule. We will see. We are also looking at some evening during the week and we may look at Friday nights on dates that do not conflict with SIOUX CITY MUSKETEERS HOCKEY which is the local USHL team. Can't miss those hockey games! Anyway, when the carpet is down I will post the schedule but Sunday will be the race day.
Later,
Bill Murdock

BallisticBill 10-02-2007, 09:41 PM I heard the Lancer's had a fan somewhere!!!!! Looks like he has been found. Just kidding.
Well the Lancer's did win the Fall Classic last weekend at the Tyson Event Center in Sioux City. They beat G. Bay, Chicago and Ohio. Woppy do!!! They have'nt played Sioux City Yet. That takes place at Omaha on the 13th. We shall see---We shall see.

BallisticBill 10-02-2007, 10:12 PM B.
He will be out here to the house in a few minutes. 6'5" 218 lbs. He has Lancer fans for breakfast that's why we were shocked to see one was left. I will introduce you to him at the SpeedZone next month.
Bill
B mullins 10-02-2007, 11:06 PM Sounds like you have Rob's replacement on the farm, so Rob could start up the new speedway even sooner..
You will have to pass on his name so my girls will know who to cheer for when they play the lancers..
MURDOCKRC 10-04-2007, 06:16 AM Any word on what type of onroad classes you will be running i know its early but was just curious?
Some of both on the road course side Dusty. I have talked to or heard of 1/12th and touring from the area
Rob
