View Full Version : LIPO/ Brushless
gezer2u 09-23-2007, 08:40 PM I thought I would post this here because most people that are running Lipo are using a B/L motor.
I got to thinking that it might not be a good idea to leave the battery taped in the car after a race or when charging. The case is designed to split apart if the pack becomes damaged. If it is held together by the tape when in the car, you wouldn't know it. What do you guy's think?
I was hpoing that bright minds would come up with some kind of quick release mount, easier to work on the chassis if the battery is charging on the side somewhere. Plus wouldn't a 500 lap race with pit stops to change batteries be COOL...
swtour 09-23-2007, 09:41 PM Don,
I was thinking the same, but man is sure is sweet to LEAVE IT IN w/o having to change it out between runs.
I was thinking about designing a battery tray with something like a old associated battery holder lined w/ good bumper foam for impact...and be able to change it out really quick, especially since I have extra batterys...
Joe,i'm thinking of doing a few more of my trays, like the one i ran in Phoenix this year
swtour 09-26-2007, 05:58 PM Kevin,
I forgot about those trays... That was Sweet...
2Groovy4U 09-26-2007, 07:06 PM Kevin, you ran lipo in Phx

I know leaving it in sounds good, but I think swapping t-plates with the charge cords attatched to the batt in the car would be awkward. One of the things about brushless/lipo is the time it gives you to try chassis changes, and I don't feel comfortable makinf some changes with the batt in the car and leads attatched.....IMO...someone work on a nice, simple, batt clip of some kind. Standard size hard case should be simple...

Joe,
Custom works has sort of beat you to it. This tray is designed for the Orion 4800 LiPo and Custom Works Dirt Oval chassis:

I actually bought one to use with my 4200s because the original Custom Works tray for Nickel batteries doesn't fit the new (larger) cells very well. In the end, I didn't use it, preferring to make my own out of some Lexan angle I got from McMaster-Carr. Here's a pic of the tray I made:

This should work on any flat chassis like a pan car. The McMaster part number for the lexan I used is 1755K62. A 4 ft length for under $5 will make 3 trays. Since it is 1" angle, someone who wanted protection for uncased LiPos could leave the sides full height. I cut the sides down to clear the battery bars on my NiMH pack. You can also get single side adhesive foam from McMaster to line the tray.
For another application, I made a pair of trays milled out of nylon bar. They are shown here with nickel batteries in them but could work equally well with LiPos:

pmsimkins 09-27-2007, 12:26 PM If you guys wanted to get more hardcore about it you could just get chassis or battery trays cut specifically to hold the Orion packs and then tape them in like you do NiMH. Then you could get the battery sitting lower and have the easy adjustability of battery position we have with NiMH. It would also be lighter, more secure and easier to design then a quick change system.

garacer08 01-22-2008, 12:17 AM Randy's mount works great. All I have to do to remove my batt is just remove two screw and maybe loosen the other two about 2-3 turns and spin the bracket out of the way. I can have my batt out of the car less than min after getting back to my tralier. Yes you have to remove 2 screws but we remove 4 screws when we remove the body. Not a big deal and a great battery tray also.
