View Full Version : Brushless Speed Control Questions
J-Dub Racing 09-20-2007, 05:10 AM All-
I was thinking about a new speed control and wondered what ones you like and why. I have used the LRP Comp 07 version and really liked them, but I am a big fan of Novak and the customer service. Also what about the 4 cell versions of GTB any good? Also the Spread Spectrum versions? Not really trying to start a fire storm here, just trying to get your opinions of what you think is faster.
Feel free to also comment on the 10.5 motors. Are the old 4300 motors really faster?
Thanks
Joel White
Danny B 09-20-2007, 10:37 AM Joel,
None of the speed controls mentioned are "faster" I've run the original GTB and the 4-cell version. I've only ran the 4-cell version in 4300 on carpet. I choose not to run one in modified or outdoors. I also ran all summer with a std. GTB and the Futaba Fasst system with no problems.
My first 4300 motor was fast, I got a pro 10.5 and it didn't seem as good, got another "old" version and it seemed pretty good. Got another Pro10.5 and it seems to be the best one yet. On most accounts, they are all pretty even. But when you are looking for .02-.05sec per lap being the difference from 1st -5th, it makes a difference. But is it no different that having that one stock motor or 19t motor that is just better than the rest, even though they are supposed to be equal.
I think every serious racer has their "good" motor they only use when it counts.
98Ron 09-20-2007, 10:45 AM Jdub, I ran the Novak SS for about a year and had a problem with the system shuttting down, let the car sit for a few minutes and it would go again. Yes, it is an early model, but you asked. I recently changed over to the LRP 07, car runs great love it. One thing to think about, we seem to be at a cross roads with NIMH and LIPO, I have heard that Novak folks have stated that the 4 cell GTB's are not designed for the 7.4 vdc of the Lipo. You might want to figure that into your thoughts.
pmsimkins 09-20-2007, 11:17 AM One thing to remember on the Novaks is to ditch the small wires, go to 12 AWG on either version.
98Ron - It sounds like your SS speedo was thermaling, it won't be an issue on a GTB.
brian0525 09-20-2007, 11:27 AM I would go with the Reg GTB not the 4cell for a couple reasons being that you have a bigger market to sell it if you need to with everyone else running 6cells in offroad and other racing. You also have what you need to run LiPo so you just have things covered more with the standard version over the 4 cell and you can always make a plain flat plate for the speedo to reduce weight of the heat sink.
As far as spektrum style or not I don't have an opinion either way but they say it runs cooler. Maybe someone who has used it and can say for sure.
pmsimkins 09-20-2007, 11:31 AM I can't really see the Spectrum version making a difference in oval. Having the fets turn on and off faster isn't much use if you've got it pegged going around an oval.
98Ron 09-20-2007, 11:46 AM OOPS!!
J-Dub Racing 09-20-2007, 01:22 PM Thanks for the info guys. Like I said in the original post I did really like the LRP, but you can't beat the customer service you get from Novak

The GTB switches the fastest at full throttle. The Spektrum version is awesome for oval.
The inside's of the 6 cell/4 cell are identical. We have racers using both (plus the LRP) with 4 cell and lipo. You just don't have the heatsink fan/built in lipo cutoff circuit on the four cell version.
We really haven't seen a need to have the lipo cutoff for our local 5 minute 17.5/lipo racing. The Orion 3200 lipo usually takes about 1500mah after a 5 minute run. Last weekend, one of the 17.5/lipo qualifiers had to be restarted after about a minute and a half due to a computer lockup. We just re-gridded in the order we were running when we stopped, reset the computer and started the 5 minute race again! Plus I did some hot laps after the qualifier to make an adjustment. After about 7 1/2 minutes of running, the 3200 lipo took about 2500mah.
FYI, the 17.5/lipo TQ and A main winning car was running a 4 cell GTB.

True, my bad. I was thinking in terms of a brushed motor, not BL. You're right.
beachbum2007 09-29-2007, 09:55 PM Hi guys, do I understand you correctly that the 4 cell gtb is being run with lipo with no ill effects? In the specs, it isn't rated for the voltage of lipo...only the voltage of a 4 cell pack. thanks Beach

Yes...
