View Full Version : Why do YOU Collect?
MattGTO 09-19-2007, 10:14 PM Why? I collect because they are the perfect thing to collect. It is also a really good stress-reliever. I could just lay on my bed and look at my collection and forget about everything else. Plus I really, really like cars!
Stangfreak 09-19-2007, 10:19 PM Well said gto@2... I agree 100%... I can go down in the basement to my toy room and play all day and night... Or just sit and look at my collection and forget about everything that's going on anywhere else... I love cars and always have since I can remember...
GLH Turbo 09-19-2007, 10:36 PM I love cars first and foremost. Too many cars that I like in the 1:1, so I buy them in the smaller scale. It started out for me as something to do when my wife was shopping, gave me something to look forward to on her shopping trips. :)
scrambler81 09-20-2007, 05:56 AM I was spending more and more time at home with my wife, when I realized that everything in our living room was candles, photos of her family, or flowery. Tim Taylor always had cool die cast on display on "Home Improvement", so I ordered a set of 1/43 Matchbox Collectibles from a magazine ad. The die cast bug led me into trains, and the rest, as they say, is history. 3,500 cars, a few hundred pieces of railroad equipment and many action figures later, I'm in my glory every time I walk into my house. :)
My wife and I have since had two little boys, and this is a hobby I can share with them. They're big enough now that they can cruise the train and toy shows with me, and they've developed their own ideas of what they like to collect. My wife has no problems with my toys, or the display cases that I've set up all over the house, and she gave me free reign to design and finish my basement the way I wanted it. There are a few rooms in the new house where I don't have toys - she didn't ask, I just figured I'd try to be fair.
Dadvball 09-20-2007, 07:39 AM Like the rest of you, I love cars. Not having Jay Leno money to buy everyone I like, I've settled for diecast. It's fun to hunt them down, and great when you find what you're looking for. If I can ever get part of my basement finished I'll be able to enjoy my collection even more.

JP2-NC-JL-CRAZY 09-20-2007, 02:09 PM I can blame it all on my dad. He started buying me MB and HW when I was 2. 40 years later, I'm even more addicted.
But seriously, I mainly collect cars from the 50s, 60s and 70s. You know, from when cars had personality. Can't afford all the 1:1 I want, so I get them in 1:64, that way I can get alot of them. :woohoo:

aaamen brathah!!! i mainly go for the older mouscle cars coz cars looked sooo much better back then
Superbird77 09-20-2007, 03:02 PM I fell in love with muscle cars/hot rods/lead sleds when I was about 8 years old (that was I guess 1985) and had one or two issues of Chrom&Flammen magazine (european US-car scene) but there was almost impossible to get any models of US cars around here, maybe (but very rarely) a HotWheel here and then... maaaany years later I discovered HWs again, on a Greek island. Then HWs finally appeared in our shops, then thanks to internet I found about Johnny Lightning, then Kyosho etc...
I'm not even sure why I like 1/64 scale the most. I guess it's cool as they take the least space. Last year or so I really enjoy Kyosho minicar series, although they haven't released any muscle cars in this series (YET...I hope :p ). So I really like to just look at the design, enjoy the details etc...
roadwarrior 09-20-2007, 03:06 PM It's easier to get the wife to accept a 4 dollar car than a 400 dollar gun
scrambler81 09-20-2007, 05:16 PM wow, lucky you, i hope when i move in with someone she has no problem with my collection...
Just because a girl says "yes", doesn't mean she's the right one for you. It's a matter of picking very carefully. I know guys that have put more thought into buying a camera than they did picking a wife. Needless to say, their marriages aren't as happy as mine.
My hobbies keep me around my house, involve my children, can't get me in trouble, and are mighty cheap when compared to things like golf or gambling. My wife understands all this, so she has no complaints. Some of my nicest pieces were gifts from her.

Wow :dude:
LOL!
FLOYDFROG 09-20-2007, 05:39 PM I collect simply because I really like good old-fashioned American muscle cars (and VWs :) ) Rarity and/or monetary value means nothing to me. I only collect what I truly like. To me, it's alot more fun collecting without my eyes being clouded by $$ signs.
eyecandy 09-20-2007, 05:45 PM The little green men told me to.
terry9911 09-20-2007, 06:06 PM Dear Abby: I like to pretend I'm at the drive-in movies and will sit in front of the TV and watch it through the windshields of my little cars. There's just something about being at the drive-in (sort of)! Do you think there is something wrong with me?

PONCHO455 09-20-2007, 06:25 PM I Have To Blame My Dad First.he Started Collecting Cars Before I Was Born Because He Knew He Was Going To Have A Son.he Had A Huge Collection Of Schucos When He Was Younger, but Had To Leave Them Behind When He Came To The States.i Think He Wanted To Carry On A Tradition,so He Started With The 1/64 Cars.hot Wheels, matchbox, johnny Lightning, impy, corgi, etc.as I Got Older The Cars Got Bigger.1/43,1/24,1/18.he Would Do This In Phases As I Got Older.2nd Reason Is I Love Cars.my Very 1st Word Was Car,and My Parents Taped It And Gave It To Me When I Turned 16.i'm 37 Now And I Have A Nice Size Collection In All Different Scales Spread Out Through 3 States.my Father Still Collects For Me As Well As My Own Purchases.if And When I Have Children,i Hope To Pass The Tradition Down To Them.i'm Glad I'm In This Hobby And I Thank My Dad For The Headstart.
montegogt 09-21-2007, 12:48 PM Because I like cars. 99.9% of my collection is loose.
PWSchuh 09-21-2007, 01:16 PM You know, I don't think you will find too many variations on the theme. The vast majority of diecast collectors all collect for the same reason: we love cars but we're not Jay Leno. If I owned all the 1:1 that I really wanted, I wouldn't have time for any other hobbies. A few people may collect mostly for nostalgia reasons, but most of them still really like cars.
JasonZ 09-24-2007, 08:19 PM Because I like cars. 99.9% of my collection is loose.
Me 2  I collect because its not such a demanding hobby like fishkeeping. I used to fishkeep(still am) and it takes a whole lot more time to feed, clean, and maintain a fish tank then to collect cars. I always liked cars especially the racing one(Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo)
be7bt 09-24-2007, 09:12 PM I collect because it is a neat hobby. My wishes i would stop ,but i can't. So what is a guy suppose to do? I love the muscle cars when Ifind them. Thanks to Milezone 's site.
wannafbody 09-24-2007, 09:51 PM caus I can't afford a collection of 1:1 cars. I'm going to build a 1:64 scale museum and charge 64cents admission :p
