View Full Version : Lost In Space Dvd Question
bert model maker 09-17-2007, 02:17 AM I have been looking at the complete lost in space dvd collection http://www.familyvideo.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?whatType=all&whatText=lost+in+space+&title=lost+in+space&person (http://www.familyvideo.com/catalog/advanced_search_result.php?whatType=all&whatText=lost+in+space+&title=lost+in+space&person)=
and noticed that the first part of season 3 is in "PAN & SCAN" while the rest of the episodes including the 2and half of season 3 is in full screen. What gives with this ? anyone that owns the FULL 3 seasons what kind of picture/sound quality do these have ? is there a source out ther where a guy can purchase the ENTIRE 3 season set as a package deal ?
jbond 09-17-2007, 02:00 PM After season one the next two seasons are broken up into halves. I have no idea what "pan and scan" would mean here, all these TV shows are full screen and there should be no difference between them as far as that part of the presentation goes. Video quality is relatively lousy--supposedly high-def, terrific transfers were made and then for some idiotic reason repeatedly not used--the transfers of Land of the Giants, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and Time Tunnel are superb and it's tragic LIS has been released this way given that it's probably the most popular of the four shows, or at least was...

I have all of the episodes on VHS that i taped in high speed SP mode with 2 episodes to each tape. Bought very high quality tapes too. I made mine from the sci fi channel in 1997 BEFORE i switched to dish digital but they are good recordings BUT are loaded with those idiotic phsycic hotline commercials ( remember those ? ) I wonder if i got a VHS/DVD recorder if my dubs onto DVD would look better ? I can buy a good one for the cost of the LIS DVD set.

Your dub is never going to look better than your source material. DVD is a more robust archive medium, however.
bert model maker 09-17-2007, 03:29 PM My recordings look, good but then they are 10 years old. How poor of a quality are those dvds ? hopefully they will look better than my VHS tapes. as long as they have a clear picture and great sound i will be happy. I hope they are not grainy or you have to turn the volume all the way up to hear the dvds. I keep reading posts where a lot of people are dissappointed in the quality.
flyingfrets 09-17-2007, 08:25 PM Bert,
While I am admittedly not a videophile, the LIS DVDs look pretty good to me. However, in fairness, I must point out that that will not hold true if you are watching on an HD setup. As Brent pointed out on the release of this DVD, the HD format will make every scan line, pixelation, artifact or "jaggy" jump right out at you.
If they were to re-release LIS with true digital remastering, yes, I'd buy the set again, but until then, these look just fine on our 37" flat-screen. They serve their purpose (entertainment) and are WAY better than 10 year old VHS tapes.
BTW: If you're still having trouble locating a set, PM me.

thanks Frets we have a hidef set that is a regular square tv instead of the long narrow ones. we just got a small flat screen LCD for the bedroom with a small DVD player. you have a P.M. on the way.
Roland 09-22-2007, 11:17 PM I bought the first season in black and white. When I saw the second season in color, split in half, and at a higher price, I pretty much figured I could do without.
