If you're a genuine Western fan, go see 3:10 to Yuma in the theater. I've never seen the 1957 original with Glenn Ford (which has just moved to the top of my Netflix queue), but I can't imagine that this version compares unfavorably. In some fundamental ways, it's a surprisingly old-fashioned Western. And that approach works just fine.

Saw it on the signboard the other day but couldn't find any review of it - thanks for the tip, will try to grab a show.

Saw 3:10 to Yuma yesterday. Slow moving at times, but definitely worth seeing! I agree it's a bit of a "throw back" to the older westerns, which works to it's benefit.

I don't want to give away any spoilers - so I'll be somewhat vague and just say I had a hard time believing Russel Crowe's character arc at the very end of the film.
His #2 man was sure a great villain. Cool to see Luke Wilson doing a cameo as well.
Great to see a western up on the big screen again! It's my favorite genre.

Yeah, if the arc (of which you spoke) tied into Crowe/Wade's backstory, it might have worked better. Maybe a scene was cut ... ?
But I enjoyed the movie.

His #2 man was sure a great villain.Yep, Ben Foster. Dave (the next door neighbor) in The Punisher, Claire's boyfriend Russell in several episodes of Six Feet Under, Angel in X-Men: The Last Stand, among others. Always a solid performance, playing very different characters.

Just watched the original. The DVD looks great - nice, clean, restored B&W print. Ford and Heflin both give fine performances. Very taut storyline - probably much closer to Elmore Leonard's original short story. The remake fleshes out the characters and the storyline considerably - and makes one big dramatic change at the end. Interesting how much of the original film's dialogue - some of it verbatem - remains intact in the newer version. I say if you've only seen the remake, then check out the original. And if you've only seen the original, then check out the remake. No Frankie Laine theme song this time around though. And that's a good thing.
