I am thinking of restoring some diecast cars that I found recently. Unfortunately someone made an attempt to "restore" them before me and painted the cars all over, including the windows. Is there a way of removing paint from clear platic without making windows look "foggy"?
Thanks for help.

Purple Power Degreaser by Castrol available at AutoZone should solve your problem.

Great, thanks! Shall I use cotton swabs to remove the paint or can I simply submerge a piece of plastic in it?

I use different things to remove paint but, if you use purple power Degreaser I would put some on and then let sit for about 5 to 10 min. Take to the sink with an old toothbrush and scrub really well and then clean up with soap and water. If that doesn't do the trick then try to leave stuff on longer and then do the same trick. Don't know the power of this stuff so...good luck!

I used Pine Sol to remove paint from my slot cars. I Keep Pine Sol in a pickle jar and just throw it in for a day or more without hurting the plastic. I think Pine Sol would be safe on clear plastic but not 100% sure??? I would think it would be fine myself and try that if the other stuff doesn't work.

I also use a product called ELO (Easy Lift Off) which has just recently been bought out by Testors. You can find it at the Hobby Store. It works fast but, don't leave it on very long as it can melt the plastic if not used correctly. On 5 min and then wash off. Read the can for directions and wear gloves as it is very caustic stuff.

A similar product is Easy Off Oven Cleaner. I use this on thicker front and rear rims to remove any chrome and then get detail back for painting purposes(mostly JL pull back Steely looking rims from years ago) The chrome was to thick and took away the detail in my opinion. It is all an experiment at first then it becomes a science. SPIC AND SPAN is stuff I have heard other people using instead of Pine Sol.

Lower power first (Pine Sol or Spic n Span) and that can work well usually with a little time and not hurt anything. Pine Sol did melt the Eldon Plastic bodies and didn't use it on them again. ELO was then used with great success.

Bleach can also remove old chrome from model kits easily. That I found out by having a rim in one of my pockets many, many years ago...it was turned to the color of the plastic and chrome was removed.

Tatra,
I just pour some Purple Power into a jar and leave the plastic piece in overnight.

If I think about it I pickup the jar and swirl the liquid around from time to time.

It usually takes less than a day.

I've used model airplane fuel. (Cox to be exact.) It'll take off enamel paint but won't kraze the plastic. You'll probably have to polish the clear plastic in any case.

I find that 99-proof isopropyl alcohol and a Q-tip will remove 'paint' from the plastic windows, no problem. Be patient, keep rubbing; it takes a few moments for the chemical effect to work.
