The only Stephen King story that ever scared me (and that was only the part just after the storm/before the store, but still).
razorwyre1 09-03-2007, 06:42 AM i didnt realize that darabont (sp?) was doing this... i am SOOOOOO there!
Ohio_Southpaw 09-03-2007, 08:02 AM Excellent! 21 November release date. I'm there.
Roland 09-03-2007, 08:45 AM This preview reminds me of "The Storm", only this time its a fog instead of snow.
frankenstyrene 09-03-2007, 09:38 AM Been waiting for this to come out since I first read it as a kid, but the story is just so dang moody in spots I'm not sure how it can be done right. But then I'm not familiar with any of Darabont's work...I don't get out much...maybe he can pull it off?
Griffworks 09-03-2007, 02:04 PM Frank Darabont's IMDb Entry (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001104/) - he's worked w/King before on The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, as well as from his Night Shift collection: The Woman in the Room. He's done some excellent work, IMNSHO.
ChrisW 09-03-2007, 09:51 PM Aintitcoolnews.com had one of their reviewers visit Darabont on set and had some exclusive information and pics. It may still be available in the archives...Wonderfest perennial Greg Nicotero did the practical monster effects for the film. This was a fun monster story in its most basic form - throw normal people into a monstrously abnormal situation. Throw into the mix a cluastrophobic setting (the market) and see what happens. Should be a lot of fun.
spencer1984 09-04-2007, 12:13 PM The Mist is one of my favorite King stories, so I'm really hoping they can pull it off. His short stories usually translate better to the screen, and with Darabont's name attached I'm being cautiously optimistic.
stupidsquirrels 09-05-2007, 02:02 AM The Mist; Great story
Frank Darabont; Great director
I'm excited.
Roland 11-24-2007, 11:29 AM Well, I went and saw The Mist last night with my family. We all liked the film. The suspense was intense throughout the movie. The character development was done well. It's worth seeing.
But, I hated the ending. I thought the movie could have ended better than that.
frankenstyrene 11-25-2007, 12:13 PM Your comment intrigued me so I went to moviepooper. Was going to take the wife next weekend to see it; not now.
Griffworks 11-25-2007, 12:46 PM ... and...?
I loved it.
I don't have to have bright sunny films with happy endings, with puppies and kittens and presents with bows on them. Good luck with those.
Roland 11-27-2007, 08:09 AM I don't have to have a fairy tail happy ending either. I've seen enough european films with depressing endings that I liked. I don't think the characters really would have done what they did considering the level of wisdom that they portrayed.
The book didn't end like that. Although I have heard that Mr. King approved of the alternate ending. Oh well. it's still a good film.
Level of wisdom? Remember the lady from the beginning of the film? Turns out she was right. Remember all the people that stayed in the grocery store? They probably ...well, don't want to spoil it. I have some questions about the aftermath, but can't discuss it till we have a spoiler thread.
Steve244 11-27-2007, 07:25 PM Liked it a lot too. Kidletts and I went (14 and 12). I was glad they didn't try for a hollywood ending. Really brought home the absolute horror in an Apocalypse Now sort of way.
Roland 11-27-2007, 11:28 PM The zealous christian was right about alot until later. Everyone that stayed wasn't exactly right either. If you recall what they did to the soldier or wanted to do with the boy. They got went crazy. I wouldn't want to hang around them either.
I'm not saying what they did was right, but the fact that some of the choices they made really paid off in the end. I'm surprised there isn't more outrage from Christian groups about this one.

Darabont is one helluva director - I wish he'd get more work.
frankenstyrene 11-28-2007, 05:30 PM I'm surprised no one has made brown Jell-o yet.

at this stage, darabont "gets" as much work as he wants. its not like he's a newbie hoping someone will hire him to direct. he choses what he will adapt into a film for himself. its really a matter of whether or not the rights to a certain work of fiction are available. if there was a project out there that he didnt initiate, but wanted to direct, im pretty sure that's an instant hire. no one in their right mind would turn him down if he were offering to direct their film.

I guess I mean that I wish he'd take on more projects. The man is truly gifted, even if "Shawshank" sort of flew under the radar for a while.
Edit: I see that his IMDB entry lists an upcoming production of "Fahrenheit 451." :woohoo:

i think that one of the reasons his films are so good is that he doesnt just crank them out.
i'll take a few gems over a lot of mediocrities anyday.
ChrisW 12-16-2007, 12:22 AM We finally went to see it Friday. We both enjoyed it, but were bummed out by the ending. I don't need bright sunshiny conclusions either- it takes some guts to make a downer film - but because the characters were so well developed you were pulling for them. Do I think their action was in character? Well, the depressing surroundings they were travelling thru certainly represented the desperation they were experiencing, but after all they went thru I think they would have tried harder - siphoning (or at least) searching for more gas, trying different vehicles, etc.
We were really pulling for Ollie!
Roland 12-18-2007, 03:59 PM I'm thinking that it would have been nice at the end to wrap it up with the main characters learning exactly what happened and how it happened. But, after that scene at the end, it doesn't leave room for much else except misery.
Griffworks 12-18-2007, 08:25 PM I'm hopin' this is still on a theater when I get home. Want to take Wife out on a Date Night - dinner and then The Mist. :)
