In the past we had classes known as

STOCK
MODIFIED
"SPEC"
and then 19t.

(plus a few others over the years)

Now with B/L we have classes based on a motor number

17.5
13.5
10.5

Then we kind of have "MOD" which will allow nearly any of the b/l motors..and in some cases, virtually any brushed motor as well.

Here's my question for LOCAL or other RACE Directors.

While you can NOT run a "8.5" in the "10.5", but can you run a 13.5 in the 10.5 class w/o penalty?

Technically by the rules of the organizations the answer would be no. In practice though it doesn't really come up, for obvious reasons. I can't imagine anyone would care if you wanted to though.

Pat,

At times...I can't get a 10.5 to the ground..and I stick a 13.5 in the car...for car control...and never really thought about anyone being PISSED because I wasn't running an actual "10.5" motor...

If you responded before I edited I misread your original post. I thought you were asking why you couldn't run a 8.5 with a 10.5. I read an extra word in your sentence that wasn't there.

I raced a track last night where, if they ran a 10.5 class, this situation would probably come up.

You can always adjust your transmitter settings to tame down the 10.5 though. That would probably be the best way to maxmize performance versus putting in a 13.5.

Joe, How do you come up with this stuff??? Do you lay awake at night and think of this stuff?? You MUST be a thinker. :p;) J/K!

Keep'em coming! I like it!!

LOL - Don you know me... I'm just a NUT for some of this stuff...

A lot of times - I just bring up issues I hear little snickers about at races...that nobody knows anyone is paying attention too (I may be BLIND...but I have really good ears)

Pat - I've never had much success w/ the radio deal - but that is something I need to work on...because for instance at the last track when I switched to the 13.5 motor...it was too slow to really compete, although I was 6-7 laps faster w/ IT than I was w/ the 10.5 (because I could drive it much harder, where I was really trying to pedal the 10.5) If I had backed down the radio to about 85% or so on the accel, it probably would have been great. (In the old days - I would have turned down the TORQUE LIMITER to take the rip out coming OFF the corner)

Haven't quite figured out how to make all the comfortable adjustments to the B/L deals yet... (But, ever outing is a NEW experience..and MAN do I love this B/L deal so far)

so the guys who run the 10.5 motors and are sticking to the rules of the class could/would be at a disadvantage? you say the 13.5 in the 10.5 on some tracks is easier to go fast with. i have been to a few of those tracks...

i think as long as you announce what your plans are to the rest of the 10.5 guys and they were cool with it..that would be ok

if you are just being sneeky and using the slower motor to your advantage than that would be cheating..if the rules state 10.5 novak motors only and you run a 13.5 novak..you are not in compliance with the tracks rules.

..I've always been a big "THINKER" when it comes to making a car more 'drivable'.

I remember 20 years ago (or close) running my TOJ bodied 10L on a VERY SLIPPERY track in the MOD class...using a STOCK motor...or moving the solder tabs on the battery back to only use 5 cells of a 6 cell pack.

CAR CONTROL vs. guys who refuse to SLOW DOWN on a track they can't drive...

Similar, I watch guys run MOD motors that are WAY too hot for their driving ability..and at the end of qualifying - the MOD GUY may have run the same or SLOWER than a 19t TQ or a 10.5 TQ (So that tells me - if a 10.5 runs the same time on the CLOCK then the 3.5 is TOO insane..and maybe these guys should have DROPPED to a milder motor..and gained some control)

...again - just thinking aloud..and tossing stuff in the air

Reminds me of DIRT modified racing where small blocks and big blocks sometimes run together. It's cool seeing a small block win when the track is slick and actually helps. I don't know if the small blocks get a weight break or anything.

Tommy,

Most places either the BigBlock gets a weight penalty...or the small block gets a weight concession.

These things are adjusted as needed but you are right...a dry slick track - HORSEPOWER does Not prevail most of the time...

I think about NASCARS Martinsville several years back...when the BUSCH Cars were running V6's and would out qualify the Cup Cars with their BIG V8's....I always said someone needs to put a THROTTLE STOP on the CUP cars so they could only get about 80% throttle...or else YANK a spark plug wire.
