View Full Version : Where do you sell your most valuable diecasts?
JJames 08-29-2007, 08:22 PM This is becoming a problem for me. I've tried posting my most valuable diecasts on eBay, and nobody is ever willing to bid anything close to what they are worth. I put a Jeff Gordon train set from 1997 on there, valued anywhere from 90-100 dollars, and the highest bid I got was 25. So I ask, is there any other good places to sell them?
69Stang 08-29-2007, 08:50 PM OK, Understand this is only my opinion, but as far as NASCAR items goes....there is no good outlet!
From what I have watched over the years, the value of Nascar diecast has tanked! True hard core collectors who would know the value and would be willing to pay for a great piece, has been collecting long enough that they already have the same cars!
5 to 7 years ago, my area had a dozen nascar based diecast shops, now we have none. we do have a clearance diecast shop that sell all 1:64 scale diecast for $5 each. I mean cars that were selling for $35 to $50 just a few years ago, now selling for $5!
I moved my Nascar stuff years ago, and I am so glad from a value standpoint. I truly hope you have good luck. Try our Sell and Swap board.
CJTORINO 08-29-2007, 09:01 PM Sell?.....Sell? who sells?
my collection is like a supermassive blackhole.
items come in, and never get out.
Honestly though, Mr. 69Stang is correct.
NASCAR diecast are real duds as far as getting any money back out of them.
overproduction has alot to with it.
I have a huge steamer trunk crammed full of that stuff,
some really nice, good looking diecast, that will never see the light of day again.
Maybe in fifty years it might be worth what I paid for it.

Those were the days my friend, everybody thought they would NEVER end ....
well since 1997 NASCAR prices for all but a few OLDER pieces are nothing.
It also depends upon WHERE you get that 90-100 "value" from. If it is from Diecast Digest than that is your problem. Their prices were NEVER really that good as a guide because they decided it was more important to get ads in the book than to correct and maintain the LISTS and prices accurately. It became a DEALER price guide not an ACTUAL price guide.
There are also too many "good" items in the market place. Too many sellers willing to sell. When a DEAD driver (Dale E for what 6 years now) can outsell living and competitive drivers in diecast and souvenir sale, that should tell you something.
IF you only put the train set up for one auction cycle that is NOT a fair idea of the value. With an auction site, you can't ASSUME that all collectors who want the Gordon products are 1. bidding that week, 2. have the money to buy that instead of NEWer Items, or 3. really want to pay anything but retail or wholesale price for "older" items that were driven by "their" driver before they were even fans of the sport. Most new collectors WANT the NEW stuff. Most OLD collector's already have an item like that, do not want it, or are looking for the lowest price possible.
Something like a TRAIN or a BANK or a GO-CART is not going to get "top dollar" anymore.
DiecastKrazy 08-30-2007, 10:25 AM thats the dang ol truth man
best place or should i say way.....? here where i live several. we have alot of race fans. not that far from dover.
several local publications allow free advertising of items under 100 dollars with 12 to 14 words in the add, including the paper with a 31000 circulation.
also, most all the groceries have boards for putting up adds.
also we have a local website that is all classified. broken down into categories like ebay. only not an auction, just a set price, and it runs for a month, and can be renewed or revised anytime.
i sold $225.00 of diecast last weekend off a local radio stations party line. you can call in for free and offer items up on the air every day from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30.
really a matter of getting the word out you have diecast to sell. and doing your homework. there are lots of avenues. but with ebay a loser. local works. people have the item in hand. no waiting, shipping, etc.
plus, there are flea markets every sat. and sunday. lots of race fans, or people looking for gifts etc.
it can be done, i even made some like business cards i leave around, and sometimes i'll get a call.
BEACH 09-15-2007, 09:10 PM My dad had thousands of dollars of diecast, all scales too. Tried to sell them, I think he got only a few hundred dollars for them. I think it is like any collectable, collect what YOU like and just never plan to sell it or expect to take a beating on them.
Jim
i've sold over $500.00, of items local, i couldn't get $50.00 on ebay for, in the past 2 weeks. all from free advertising, and just letting people know i have it to sell. be it a free add, or striking up a conversation in the diecast isle in k-mart and having what k-mart doesn't.
those people tell other people, and on........... pretty soon, i can trash whats left, since it looks like i've now surpassed by a bit, what i once spent, which was well into 4 figures. but still have some good stuff left i can sell.

That's a pretty good layed out plan there Kwik :)
terry9911 09-18-2007, 08:15 AM Nascar diecast has even taken a dive here and near Daytona Speedway. I concur on the overproduction theory. The newer stuff is still on pegs around here and not moving. Most dealers at flea markets here want a mint for the older stuff so it doesn't sell either. I do own mostly Dale Earnhardt cars, along with others of course.
The sport itself seems stagnant too maybe due to drivers with no personality (Kyle and Kurt Busch) or maybe it's the boring sponsors (no more Hot Wheels #44), or no more exciting drivers like Dale Earnhardt to watch. Personally, I've lost interest in the sport. Loss of interest in the sport also effects the interest in the diecast.
I found 1:64 Rusty Wallace cars at a garage sale still in the packages from the 1980's for .25 cents apiece recently.

ROACHIE
NASCAR diecast hit the skids when they started putting out the chase cars, gold cars etc. Now the only thing anyone ever wants is special pieces or, a driver with some longevity to his career.
Yard sales, flea markets, and even ebay is loaded down with it I'm glad I dumped all of mine when I did.
