I was hoping to get a little help on this. I run a xxx4 with a 4.5 and everytime i put a lipo in to run the 10mi main and 7minutes or so into the race it shuts down. The motor temp is well over the 200deg. mark. Everything in the car is spinning freely and i even added a huge heatsink on the motor. The gearing was a 12pinion and 92spur. I also put this setup with the same pinion and a 86spur in my xxxt and had the same thing happen. Now when i run reg. 3800 nimh packs it doesn't seem to have an issue with it. Has anyone had this experience? I pretty sure these motors have heat sensors in the cans and they are set to shut down around 175, i was thinking of trying the new sinter rotor novak has but i don't understand how that would combat my problem because if the sensor is allready set to trip at 175 then what good is the rotor which is suppose to be good up to 200deg. If someone could educate me on this i would really appriciate it.Thanks for any help..... :(

The motor will run cooler with the sintered rotor.

I'm not sure why, but the sintered rotor makes the motors run much cooler than the bonded rotors. I'm assuming that you have an older 4.5 motor that had either the smooth black or cord-wrapped gray bonded rotor. All the new ones come with sintered. The recommended gearing from Novak's website is usually pretty close, but a 10-minute main would complicate matters. You may have to gear down a little for the longer race.

You may also want to turn the timming down on the motors to run 10 minutes.

Are you using a Novak GTB speed control with these motors? The motor thermal protection only works if you are using a Novak controller.

You can always e-mail charlie@teamnovak.com for help with any problems or questions you have.

I believe you can cut the blue wire on the leads from the motor that are the sensor leads and that should stop the shut down

I don't think you can adjust the timing on a 4.5 at least i don't think you can. I checked out my rotor on the 4.5r and it does have the bonded wrapped type. This would explain alot. The tech guy at novak claims i won't have anymore problem with it after i put in the sintered rotor. We'll see!!!!!! Thanks for all the replies, I'll put it in this week if i can get a hold of one and post the results i get from changing it, just in case someone else is having this trouble. I'll probably upgrade the 5800 to the sintered also, if this works. Thanks again!
