Just a quick little teaser with some testing of the old 25.5 B/L motor from Last Night...

Although when I'm testing I normally like to do so in RACE conditions - I was able to get some laps on the clock last night at the Racer's Haven Raceway in Bakersfield w/ the 25.5 motor using the 3200 LIPO.

The track currently does NOT run a STOCK (Car) class, so there is no real comparitive data, however we are running a "HANDOUT" style Stock NASTRUCK class using the Brushed TRINITY Chrome Can "handout" stock motors w/ "R" brushes, so we have lap times for that class.

I ran just (3) runs with the 25.5 motor

The track is approx. 180 ft. FLAT Asphalt -

10.5/4 cell QUICK laps are in the 3.9 second range with a 75 lap 5 minute run...(Just for speed reference)

The Spec Nastrucks started out the night running in the 4.7 - 4.8 lap range, and were able to get into the 4.5 lap times by the end of the night.

The 25.5 motor was run in the HEAT OF THE DAY (and the track is SLOWER at this time of day by nearly .2 - .3 for most classes) The 25.5 came out in it's first run pulling 4.7's and 4.8's consistant for the first 37 laps (when I pulled off to make a gear change) The first run was geared at a 88/58 w/ 2.16 tires

I pulled it and dropped it to a 88/53 - checked the TEMP (It was 183 degrees after the 37 laps...and sitting for the two minutes it took to change the gear)

Ran it another 40 laps - the quickest was a 4.80 and nearly ALL of the 40 were 4.8's and 4.9's...and the motor THERMALLED on lap 40. (It had been run now for close to 7 minutes.)

I put the car on my "Blue Blower" and cooled the motor down for 5 minutes - geared it UP 3 teeth 88/56 - DID NOT charge the battery - put it back on the track for another 40 laps. The third run w/ over 7 minutes running on the battery went out and ran 4.9's and 5.0's for the next 40 laps before the battery started to feel like it was losing power (Although the times had NOT dropped yet - I pulled it at that time)

That was 117 laps, and roughly 10 minutes running on the SAME charge...

The car setup was NOT perfect - (I got HIT before I ever made the first lap - and got the "T" plate broken...so I was scrambling to get it back on the track before the PROGRAM started)

With the progress I made on my SPEC TRUCK - I would have to say I could have easily progressed w/ this 25.5 as well, and with the temp drop and the speeds increasing as the night cooled, I feel this motor would have easily ran in the 4.4 second range.

(Oh - just a side note - THE LIPO BATTERY was charged the NIGHT BEFORE...at HOME)

This was MUCH closer to the "STOCK" speeds than the 21.5 motor was LAST weekend.

We will be testing BOTH the 21.5 and the 25.5's again NEXT weekend...and the following weekend on a CARPET track....with a couple BETTER drivers/

bojo,

Most of the testing we've been working on has been searching for a motor we can use w/ a LIPO (3200 style ORION PACKS) that will run STOCK 4 cell speeds.

The limited amount of testing we've done with the 17.5 on 4 cell has it running so far right about the same speeds as a 4 cell STOCK motor, but that hasn't been a direction of our focus, but more of just a fun test excercise.

IF I were working at...or looking at trying to create a 4 cell STOCK SPEED class using 4 cells w/ B/L Motors - I WOULD be planning to use the 17.5 as the motor.

The other thing I've thought about seriously was the ability to create 2 classes w/ the 17.5 motors...

4 cell / 17.5 - RUNS LIKE a 4 cell STOCK
Lipo / 17.5 - RUNS LIKE a 4 cell 10.5

2 classes - One Motor, make a gear and battery change..and you are set for 2 classes...which enticed some of our club guys, but I think a lot of our guys are on the track of NOT Wanting to deal w/ the NIMH batteries anymore...

Our local track has started working on getting a b/l class going with the 17.5 and lipo batt. We have a lot of racers looking at this class. I think it would be a fun class for most racers that have been racing for a while that wants to run faster lap times and not spend hundreds on 4200 batts just to race at the local level. I myself have been looking at this class very close. After spending almost $1000 dollars this past lated winter and spring trying to find 4200's good enough to keep up at the local level I decided to sell off all my electric stuff and race nitro only. I will admit that I spend more time racing nitro pan cars, but would love to race b/l once a lipo class gets started. I will be picking up a new electric car within the next week to start preparing for this class. Thanks to all that have been testing these motors and batts. I hope this hard work pays off in the long run for oval racing and yourself. I'm glad there are still racers out there that want to strengthen oval racing.

$1000 on batteries to race locally???

Andy - do the math

2 packs a month @ $45.00 per pack - $90.00 Month
WEST COAST races 10 - 11 months a year, so that could be $900 - 990 a YEAR in batteries..and what OUR guys have been complaining about for quite some time.

For almost a year - we've had racing going "EVERY WEEKEND" here in Calif. Some of these guys are VERY VERY Particular about what they WILL and WON'T run.

Same guys will/can spend almost as much on MOTORS per year.

These were some of the factors taken into account when looking toward bringing the B/L LIPO classes out here.

Figure a guy who is spending $1,000 a year on Batterys and $500 or so on MOTORS...can spend roughly $600 - 700 on B/L and LIPO equipment...and free up almost $800.00 toward other maintenence items....like TIRES and BEARINGS

my 4200 last more then two months

Exactly!!! I'm running packs from last winter and voltages are still 4.97-5.00. Why throw'em away? Can't sell them. Everybody has enough of these of their own. Run'em til they drop!http://www.hobbytalk.com/bbs1/images/icons/icon14.gif

swtour, I hope to be running on a 325' high banked concrete track Saturday.

I have my lipo battery and charger ready to go. I will be running a Mav 5.5 opc.

I will have a couple 10.5's with me and hope to have a new 13.5 and 17.5, I should be picking them up friday at the LHS.

In open mod 4 cell with a 8t, we would gear 124/33 or so, we would come out running 4.6's. Based on your experience what would you use as a starting gear ration for a 10.5, 13.5 and 17.5 running Lipo. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

You guy's must be part of that rare club that hasn't lost a cell. For the rest of us it is a common occurrence. ;)

I’ve had to buy about 20 packs and at least 5 of those were bad be for I got them
The others went bad after just a few cycles I got some of them replace for free but the replacements were bad as well

A friend of mine just bought two new packs of 4200's. Each pack contained one dead cell. Sad but true.

Any idea how long they sat on the shelf after they were matched??
