View Full Version : new to 1/4 scale racing
cars4fun2001 08-19-2007, 01:26 AM I picked up my first 1/4 scale car ever today. I have wanted one for as long as I can remember. it is a lightning car. I am going to run in the sportsman on the dfw track. I have race rc 1/10 scale in just about ever form oval pavement and dirt on road off road and even drag racing so I am no stranger to rc racing. I am very exited to be moving into 1/4 scale and don't think I will ever go back. I was hoping some one could give me some idea about a base line set up to start with. I can tweak it from there.
Thanks Mike

I will be glad to help you mike. The main thing on Quarter scale is getting the camber and toes right in the car. It will change track to track and I will be running the QSAC race in DFW this year for the first time. It looks alot like the track I run on up here in SC. I will send you one of my setup sheets by email next week that will get you started. Hope you have a blast with your lightning they are good cars. I have ran lightning for one year now and have had good luck with the cars. I have just become a new PRO 1 Dealer so I will be changing brands. I will still help you as much as i can. Its all about getting people into the sport and having fun. See you at texas.
Tim Mc 08-19-2007, 12:30 PM Mike,
I tried to email a couple setup sheets but your email is blocked.

NitroWolf I don't know why it is blocked never run into that before. My email is cars4fun2001 at yahoo dot com.
I got the car cranked p to day. I just picked it up yesterday. It will need a little tunning as it is banging out on the top end and I left it set idleing for about 2min and it idealed up an died tel tel singe of running lean. The motor wasnt to hot. but I still think it is running a little lean. It is hard as heck to get to start also. takes way to many pulls to get it to fire off. anoughter thing that makes me think it is lean. I didnt drive it but about 4 min but boy did I love it.

That is a sportsman carb. Does it have a screw in the top of the carb. in the center of the black barrel. If so turn it down til it stops and back it out 5 1/2 turn and that will be in the ball park then set your idle screw so it will idle about 5000 rpm.

Mike:
I have WCM springs ( 8-12-16-20-25-30-42lb. ) and all the rod ends you would need. I sell WCM parts but if you want Lightning springs Greg Bartman has the Lightning parts. I can get what you want from him or you can call him direct. He is listed on the QSAC web site.

cars4fun2001 08-22-2007, 09:12 PM dfwrc track is about 2 hr away from me. so getting down there to practice is not going to happen. there is a doctor's office that closes at 5 I get off at 6 they have a black top drive way and parking lot that is almost the same size as the track. it is flat don't know why they didn't bank the parking lot. I have spent the last couple of days after work burning a couple of tanks each day. The car was way way lose at first but after NitroWolf sent me that set up info I reset the car completely. Went out there today after work and much much better. Now I know that every track is different and every serfice is but how will this relate to the track. If nothen else I am getting much more comfortable with the car and how it acts to throttle and brake input. I don't expect the car to handle the exact same on the track but will it be in the same ball park or a different country? I used to do this with my 1/10 scale stuff and they would be much tighter on the track then on the parking lot.
OH and Jeff I will be getting with you shortly. I have 4 weeks before My wedding and I am having to juggle things a bit around here if ou know what I mean. seams like every time I turn around there is something else that has to be payed for and I am the only one paying NO help from her folks at all.

That is the best thing you can do is get use to the car and radio. You will need a little more camber on the track than in the parking lot. You also will need less steering on the track. Just let me know on the parts. I'm just getting started with the new dealer thing. I just trying to have parts for everyone at the tracks and online still working on website But you can email me any time.
cars4fun2001 08-22-2007, 10:11 PM I was surprised that after a tank of hard running that my tire temps where even on each tire IE the inside and out side and middle of the same tire was the same temp so I guess I had the camber spot on for the flat parking lot. the RR was the hottest at 135 the RF was around 127 and both left side was around 110. If I do need less steering on thee track then I would have been impossible to drive lose before you sent me that sheet and I reset the chassis. The car would snap with the slightest bump of the steering. Today I ran a hole tank smooth as silk the next one would have been to but some one I new honked at me and instinct I looked to see who it was and run into the grass.
And here is some pics of the car that I bought and have been wanting to get since I seen the first 1/4 scale when I was like 10.

disruptor 11 08-24-2007, 05:02 PM Mike,
DFWRC is running a non points race over the Labor Day weekend......If you can get out there early a run as much as you can. Any and everyone will help with setups and there are parts for WCM at the track....if needed.
Parking lot practice is great and it sounds like you are wearing the tires evenly. The track will require some changes to your setup...but should be minor stuff. I'll miss the Labor Day race but will be out there for all the other races. Don't hesitate to ask for help....thats what we are there for.
