How do you get this thing apart? It looks like a pressed in pin of some sort. The spring has come loose inside and I see no reason I should have to buy new unti.

Govenor spring? 30yearTech 08-17-2007, 08:26 PM Recoil spring? The pin holding in the starter reel on some Tecumseh starters knocks out from the top. There will either be a plastic plug that pulls out to gain access to the pin or a sticker that needs to be peeled back. That is of course if its the recoil starter you are describing. Viper32 08-17-2007, 09:19 PM Yeah its the recoil starter spring, it has come loose inside were it hooks I think. I see no way to get to it without dissasembly. Thats were the problem is how this thing comes apart. Mark 30yearTech 08-17-2007, 09:39 PM Post the model and spec number off of your engine, so I don't tell you something wrong. This is a 6.5hp? It's probably a new type starter, should have a plastic retainer, if it does then peel the sticker back on the top of the starter and you will see a little plastic triangle shaped wedge pressed into the top of the retainer, carefully pry it out and then push the two ears of the retainer together and apply pressure to push it out, then just grab it from the starter side and pull it out. Once the retainer is out of the way you can carefully lift the starter reel out of the housing, taking care not to let the spring jump out with the reel. If the retainer is not plastic, then disregard all of the above and let me know what your model number is. vBulletin® v3.8.7, Copyright ©2000-2012, vBulletin Solutions, Inc.
