View Full Version : 1/64 Greenlight Muscle Car – MCG Series 4

Since in the introduction of the 1/64 Greenlight diecast replicas in 2006…these guys have seemed to have pulled off the impossible. The quality of these replicas surpasses anything available today including IMHO Johnny Lightnings which until Greenlight…dominated the 1/64 replica segment. The distribution albeit limited is now available at major retail outlets as well as the Hobby Shops and Online. The gap line of the opening hood is a very tight and the engine compartment features a very well detailed and accurate motor. Amazing…!

ranchero 08-12-2007, 10:14 AM Roy: Yes but - the plastic hardtop on the '63 Chrysler does not work well. The fit is poor. The finish on the plastic roof varies from that on the die cast body. The final product is clumsy. If the model were simply a convertible then my criticism would not apply. Where the metal casting includes the roof (like the two Chargers and the Challenger) the models are excellent. But when Greenlight has to use a separate plastic part for the roof the results can be "dodgy". The earlier '67 Coronet hardtop fit is bad and the '63 Chrysler just does not work well. These are premium priced models; they need to do better work on the hardtops.
69Stang 08-12-2007, 11:06 AM Roy, I agree on several fronts. These are great cars. And I am so thrilled they are doing this diecast thing right!
I am a bit concerned at the overall quality of my newer MCG 4 set. I have a lot of overall quality issues ( like glazed windows on the plastic roofs) that should have never made it through QC.
But I am a Greenlight collector. Having every MCG release so far and working on the indy rides as well. I just want them to PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE work on keeping the scale in check. I don't care if it's true 1:64, but they need to look right when all displayed together. The new Challenger , new Camaro and the 300 are HUGE!
I just don't understand, if you are building from scratch, you can do it right just as easy as doing it wrong. But overall, I am still very pleased to have this line in the market. I look for a bright future.
And your photos are BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for sharing them.
summitdrinker 08-12-2007, 12:05 PM I see the 413 cross ram is under the hood of the 300, I never set any of my 300 free to see that, thanks for the pics

There have been many valid good/bad comments on the quality of the GL cars and I for one wish they could afford separate whole-body molds for hard-tops and convertibles - but I am cutting them a little slack.
For as young as the company is (where cash and distribution is limited), for the authenticity and price of the toy, the GL 1/64 line has been absolutely a phenomenal best-buy and "must have" in my collection.
GO GREENLIGHT!
PS - this has not been a paid endorsment :)
Greenlightguy 08-13-2007, 06:49 PM i agree for a young company they are doing great. Somethings could be a little better but with time and success that will happen but for the quality with Greenlight you can't go wrong
STUTZ 08-13-2007, 09:42 PM First off, nice pics Roy.
Ever since I bought my first Greenlight 1/64 scale diecast cars last year, I was very impressed with the quality of these cars. I agree some Greenlight castings have problems with 1/64 scale size proportions, but so do JL 1/64 scale cars. I don't like the plastic tops that are put on a Greenlight model to make it a hardtop either, but JL does the same thing too. These are basicly a diecast car that can be bought in most stores for $3.99, just like JL diecast cars. I've bought many diecast cars for much more money that don't have the detail that a 1/64 scale Greenlight car has.
Greenlight, you're doing a fine job in my opinion. You are a young company, and I'm sure you will contine to improve. It's nice that Katie responds to our questions.
jimhowie2000 08-14-2007, 08:23 PM I like the fact that Greenlight has brought us some cars nobody else has, the 63 Chrysler 300, 64 Fury, 66 & 67 Coronets, 67 & 68 Impala (Ok, so Jada did both of those but they where huge and not necessarily accurate in every way..and JL did the 68 but that came a year and a half after the GL one and the roof is all wrong for an Impala...) and the 65 Coronet to name a few. I also like the subtle changes in each release.....the 71 Camaro had the full front bumper and lower parking lights in the first release. In the next release, it had the split bumper and round lamps. The 71 Charger had hidden headlights and segmented taillights in its first release, now, the current one has exposed lights and the standard taillights. It is little details like these that make this line so interesting. Sure, the plastic roof thing isn't always a success, and I don't care for some of the custom versions, but overall, this is a great line of cars and a much appreciated addition to my collection.
summitdrinker 08-14-2007, 09:26 PM jimhowie2000, I agree, look at the some what odd stuff were getting with fairly good detail and quality who else would have made the 65 dodge, 63 300 both in hardtop and convertable?
Lost Pony 08-15-2007, 12:57 PM I'm in agreement with most here. Other than the plastic tops on a few of the cars like the Cuda, for the most part I just love the sculpts of most of these.
The 68 Impala has always been one of my favorite cars of all time. Greenlight didn't skimp on this hunk of Detroit steel.
Greenlight far surpasses Johnny Lightning on most of the Mustangs. Especially the 68's and 69's and Shelby's ( I can't get past that metal wing window on alot of JL's cars) Though their 65, 66, and 70 Mustangs are excellent.
I can't wait till Greenlight decides to do the 60's Camaros in the smaller scale. Hope they do it right.
Johnny Lightning's recent resculpt of the 1/64 69 Camaro is one of the best die-cast cars in my book. Green light could give them a run for their money if they do them right.
