does anything need to be done to keep a brushless motor running in its original capacity? can anything be done to improve its performance?

Oil the bearings, thats it.

No Speed Meter for me got other items on the wish list to but.

If you haven't updated to the sintered rotor that would help keep the motor up to peak performance. The stock ones usually go flat if you thermal often or just run the motor hot all of the time.

Other than that check the bearings and make them clean and smooth. If they get gritty change them out ASAP this will cause more problems in the long run. Sometimes speedos can go out if the motor bearings are bad.
