I just got a 16HP single cylinder Briggs engine. This is an old engine with the windup rope pulley on the front. The engine had very weak spark. I replaced the points with a magnatron type ignition module. I can now feel a little spark but there is not enough to jump the gap on the plug. The magnets have good magnatism, using a new spark plug, flywheel key is good. The housing is pretty beat up so I can't get any model or type numbers. Can anyone give me some Ideas as to what else could cause a very weak spark. Thanks in advance

Are you still using the original coil just with a magnetron conversion kit? Or did you replace the coil with a new Magnetron assembly?

I replaced the coil with a new magnatron unit.

I was able to raise some numbers from the cover.

Model 326431
Code 0020-01
Serial 7607261

I replaced the coil with module # 398811. After looking at a parts breakdown of thie engine i"m not sure that was the right one. Am I better to change the coil with the magnatron unit part # 394970?

Your reply's are greatly appreciated

Well 298968 show to be the proper coil assembly for your mower, part number 398811 show to be for breaker ignition used after code date 81073100, so this part is not the correct one.

Part number 394970 is the magnetron conversion kit, but shows only to work with the 398811 armature. Check the points make sure they are clean and properly gapped at .020" they are located on the side of the engine block under a cover held on with 2 screws.
