I was wondering, has any track (or racer) ever done a "test drive" day where other experenced racers are allowed to borrow a car for a few laps to see just what quater scale is all about? I would think that one thing keeping people from getting into quarter scale is the fear of spending a thousand bucks for car/equipment and then finding they didnt like it.

There was a guy trying to get some quarter scale racing going here in Colorado and he would let drivers come out and try his cars. It was fun but it really never took off.

Hank,

Lagoon Park Raceway hosts the Boyd Hughes Memorial Championship Race. It was primarily for 1/4 scales until last year when we invited other scale classes. I'm not sure how many of the other scale racers drove a 1/4 scale that day, but we gained (4) new 1/4 racers from that one race.

Most of the 1/4 racers at LPR have often let others drive their cars. Not to hook them, but more or less a friendly jester.

Yes, it does work...the NitroWolf no longer races nitro...LOL. We should consider an official test drive day!

It worked on me! I raced at a track running off road and someone ran a 1/4 scale on the track next to the off road and was pretty much hooked then, But after i ran a few laps I bought a car in less then 5 days. lol

That is done here at Northwest R/C Speedway on a regular basis...It has netted us a few drivers from it.

I fell victim to the loaner car. Dave Pirrello (DMP_SMOKE) loaned-out his father-in-laws car for me to run. It was a straight axle car, but it was dialed-in enough for me to be able to drive it and hang with the weekly regular guys. Won the "B" and bumped to the "A" with that ride. That was all it took.

Absolutely the best racing, the best group of guys and the most fun I have ever had in all the time I have raced R/C cars.

Thanks Dave!

I was one of them (Thanks to Randy Brown) I'm hooked! I am going to my first QSAC regional race the end of this month, can't wait. I bought a car and so did Andy so we are now 2 from Macon. There are a couple of guys who live about 15 minutes away from us that have them and also we have Bob Moore who was once the QSAC National modified champion, he now restores and shows vintage race cars.Hank,

That's great to hear, Randy is a good guy and promotes the sport well. Hey, have you thought about going to the Royal Oak Grand National? They will be running the 8.5 restrictor, but it's a bit more relaxed on the cup and carb. Let me know, we'd love to have you guys there.

We had a old 1/10 scale guy show up at classic this past Saturday. Just before the mains. I told him to come back this Saturday and he could play with mine... I just didn't want to have it broke before the main. I agree though we all should do our part in trying to make this sport bigger and better

I knew I had to have a quater scale when I saw a body on the dash of a motor home at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Went to Royal Oak and made deal to buy a car. deal fell thru but I found another car and bought it. I have traveled all across the country racing and promoting 1/4 scale cars. With help from Randy Baker we brought back a dead class and now have a viable field of sprinters to race. Randy Baker, John Boccher and myself have all helped at Royal Oak, for a few years I maned the QSAC table where we set up cars and answered questions. Drove to PA. to help promote racing in that area at a show that Scott George arrainged at a hobby shop there. I have done demos at R/C swap meets and have let other people run my cars. I have always tried to help promote the sport. I am going to try and get a table set up at the Knoxville Nationals this year and display 1/4 scale sprint cars. I let members of a quater midget club run my car so they would know what a thrill it is to drive one. This also helped secure a track to race on. I have had people ask "What if I wreck it and break it ?". I told them that I would fix it and we would try again. Thats why I carry spare parts. Set up a table this year at a charity event for the Dayton Auto Race Fans. Passed out QSAC phamplets had a variety of cars on display (thanks to Mike Stuchill and Scott Brandenburg for letting me use there cars) along with a video of 1/4 scale cars racing. Had a lot of intrest in the cars. I have even driven my sprinter down Woodward Blvd. during the dream cruise. You should have seen the people jump up and take photos. It was a thrill I am here to tell you. I have done this more than once. I have even been thrown or ordered off Woodward Blvd. with my 1/4 scale Mini for doing burnouts.

To add what to what Fred posted ( man do you get long winded ) , along with Fred and I , a call out should be given to Larry Hopson , Bob Elliott , Murry Pipckok and Roger Newell for the revitalization of the sprinter class on the NCS level . Because of the six of us showing up consistantly since 2000 to insure the class was run the class has grown and now there are more cars showing up for the NCS races on a regular basis . Another thing that would help promote 1/4 scale and the NCS, District , Regoinal or whatever the races are called , is if the local guys that usually race at the track that is hosting the race would show up and support their own track . If the locals want their organization or club to grow , the people that come out to watch and have some interest want to hear about the hometown guys wupping up on the guys that travel to these races . Just a thought . Hey Fred if memory serves , didn't you get tossed off Woodward once for hanging out the passinger side window of the van , driving your sprinter down the road and your son was driving the van ?

I never got a test drive all I needed to see was a GN car up close, that happened at HobbyTown in Indy some years back. I was at a snowbirds warm up race and Dwight Smith had his GN car and a Sprint car on display. I asked Dwight to take the body off of the GN car, I looked at it for about 30 seconds and said I need one of these. I got back from that trip and ordered a WCM car on Monday. This is the most fun and most realistic form of R/C racing that I have ever done.

Randy is correct. I have been tossed off Woodward for driving my sprinter down the road in front of the van. All lanes of traffic behind me laid back and gave me the road. Cop saw what was going on and took the road away.

I will be back this year.

Yes, thanks to Bob, Larry, Murray and Roger. A fine group to race with.

I try to keep my wallet out of "intensive care", or as I say "expensive care"...
