Is this a Sportsman class race? (8.5 plates).

That is correct. 8.5 restrictor plate, but I think I heard that the velosity stack is what every you have, so the Grand National folks can run as well. This is going to make it a much more competitive event than in the past.

what i heard yesterday was that it was going to be run with gn rules except you had to run the restrictor plate the sportsman class uses.

Exactly. In years past, this event has produced more than $24K for the Give-A-Christmas all year long foundation.

1) This is some of the best racing in the country
2) You will be part of a club and orgination (GLQSR and QSAC) that will be able to showcase our sport
3) You have to be a QSAC member, but not a GLQSR member. This is open to everyone.
4) There will be anywhere from 200K to a million people in the area watching this and the other cars on bulivard.
5) This is a great family event and something for everyone to do.

Just to list a few of the attractions. So sign up and plan on being there.

I have been attending this event for close to ten years and it is always fun. I have only raced the event twice and did not do well ( I raced a borrowed car the last time and I built a stock car off the wall of parts as I do not own a stock car for the previous race. I was a subsitute racer both times for people that for one reason or the other could not make it. I race a sprint car and am not used to a stock car). Thats not fair to the sponsor so I just try to help out where I can, getting next heat ready, spotter or crowd control or whatever. Randy Baker has also done the same as myself along with some others. Some folks do not realize how much effort is put into this race. Fast Eddie McRay did it for years and Bryan took over where Eddie left off. Bryan's wife Debbie does the scoring ( thats a task in its own right). Bryan runs the race and others do what is left to do. Drivers are spared the task of turn marshalling so they can concentrate on the race car.
Excitement is all around. With whats going on on the track and with whats going up and down Woodward Blvd. If you have never been there you can't imagine what it is. It's a thrill just being there to watch let alone to participate.
You should come and see it for yourself. It is AWESOME.

Ok guys or gals , there is still room to get in on this race . If you have never raced in front of a couple thousand screaming go nuts racing fans ,here's your chance . If you have never been to an old time street cruise , with anything from a moped to uncorked headered cars that make the ground shake , here's your chance . Picture this deal as the movie American Graffiti times 1000 . This is a big Charity event of the Detroit and surrounding area , with the community of Royal Oak as the main sponsor . The Great Lakes Club sponsors and runs the race . We as a club get nothing money wise out of this event . All the proceeds go to the Make a Wish foundation . No the Great Lakes club doesn't host any of the District or NSC races , this is the BIG RACE we as a club host every year . Time to give some insight to how this deal works .

Everybody who enters is put into a pool . ( NO water involved )
On Tuesday night before the weekend of the race , there is an auction , where 26 local businesses bid on the drivers . Whatever the business can afford to pay for whoever they want as their driver they keep bidding till all the drivers are spoke for . All that bidding money goes to the charity .
Second phase of events is those same businesses then bid on body styles , same deal , all that money , over the initial cost of the body , goes to the charity . They paint the bodies that are given to you to use as their driver . Some of the sponsors like to keep the bodies after the event and some just let ya keep them . The body you use , you'll have to mount to your car . These are given to you on Friday morning . Once the track is set up , this is a parking lot race , portable track , no track advantage ( it's a parking lot race ) you are free to practice . You don't have to even help set up the track . Local business takes care of it all , set up tear down . Around six in the evening another local business provides dinner . ( Free Food ) . You'll also be given a goody bag full of hand outs . Some pretty good stuff . Practice usually resumes after the eats . Or you can feel free to roam around to all the big displays put on by the big car manufactures , there's Monster Trucks , Nascar , Dragsters . You name it , it's there . Sat. is race day . Usual deal , open practice , everybodys favorite ( the drivers meeting ) , then single car qualifing . Before any racing starts there is driver introductions . The first race is the service club race , if you're selected by one of the service clubs as their driver , you're in it . This is a side race for the service clubs , bragging rights for them with a pass around trophy . Then there's two rounds of qualifying , followed by bump up mains . By the time the qualifying rounds start the grandstands are pretty much full , and you' ve never heard such noise as this at an RC race . By A-main time it's standing room only . In a nut shell that sums up the event . Got long winded I know but it's never been posted on what exactly what to expect .
To finish up , you get a check back for $190 Does this cover your expenses ? NO . But think about it this way : When was the last time you were handed $190 after a race ( actually you get it Friday night ) ? When was the last time somebody handed you a painted body and said , Go For It . ? Do you need to buy new tires , no run what ya got . Do ya need to buy a restrictor , no it's lent to you , give it back when the race is over . When was the last time you had a couple thousand people watching and enjoying what you do ? And last but not least when was the last time you raced and didn't have to take a turn Marshalling ? Of course all volunteers are welcomed and appreciated by this old , fat , out of shape lazy kind of guy ( me ) . It's a long day and this old tow truck gets tired . All in all it's a great time . We the members of the Great Lakes Club are asking for the support of the 1/4 Scale Community for your support to make this another successful event .

where can we view pictures from past events?
I have video tapes of past events at Royal Oak. I can send them to anyone wanting to view them. I will try to convert them to DVD format when I have a little free time. I will have a DVD at Clover with a computer so anyone interested can view.
This is one AWESOME event and I am by no means over stating the case here. Remember you get PAID to race at this one. That is to help cover your expenses. You get the same pay for first to last. I have even agreed to forsake my sprinter and have borrowed a taxi cab to help fill the field. You stock car guys have someone to beat on that you don't normally have to run against.
Remember this event is for charity. We are there to put on a great show for the thousands of fans that stop buy to watch the racing action. We will be at the epicenter of the cruise. You never know who may show up at the track. I have personnaly met with a Nextel cup driver at this event and talked sprint cars with him. I have heard that Tim the tool man has cruised Woodward Blvd., and we all know he is crazy about cars and horsepower. He has been reported to own a Salien Mustang. No matter what type of car you are looking for you will most likely see it on Woodward Blvd.
Give a Christmas year around is the charity that we race for. It was organized by the Daliy Tribune to help out 9 different organizations through out the year. They have in the past printed up material with driver bios and details about the race. They publish this in the news paper so you get your name in the paper for something good. You must understand that some of the sponsors are more into this than some of the others. I know that in the drivers auction held on tuesday before the race some sponsors have bid thousands of greenbacks to get certain drivers. You could be one of them.
Have a heart, give a weekend and you will feel better year around knowing that YOU have helped someone less fortunate than you, and its something you like doing, racing and watching street rods cruise by. What I ask you could be better. Its better than ordaniary sex.

Hello,I finally got my computor working again, so now I can reply. YES! We are in dire need of drivers. I have 7 in for 26 sponsors . Yes, you can stay right at the track with a pop-up,motorhome ,camper. Several drivers do stay overnight. We are in a fenced in area with security watching.
BTW, MIS is about 70 miles away. I don't really know of any campgrounds near by, but if you needed to ,you could camp in my driveway or backyard over the weekend.
If you want to, go to Google Earth and type in Royal Oak,Michigan and use 13 mile & Woodward for the address. You will see the lot we use.(Beaumont Hospital is behind us)

There are plenty of rooms and I believe you can camp right there in the parking lot. There is a notation on the form for that. I know we can work something out for those of you comming from out of town. Please let me know if you need help in this reguard. I'll be happy to make some calls or scope something out for you. I talked with Bryan today, he still needs drivers to fill the field. Tony, Lance, Scott this would be right up your alley so to speak. Come race with us on Woodward Blvd. This is a race for charity. A fun time to see fellow racers and watch full size street rods and muscle cars cruise Woodward. I have always enjoyed this race as the excitement is beond belief. Screaming fans cheering for a favorite. If we can't fill a field I fear this may be the last time we do this. Hey even I am going to race a taxi for this one event. May demo the sprinter also.
Come join me for this worthy event, you won't regret it I asure you. You can even claim expenses on your taxes as it is a charitable cause. Not only will you feel great after having so much fun but the feeling you get knowing that YOU have help someone less fortunate than yourself. I remember to this day the excitement on a young boys face as he watched from his wheel chair, it was the highlight of his life I do believe. Please, please, please do not pass this event up as it may be the last. You do not know how much it hurts to say that.
Thank you for reading this post.

One more thing. The race will run the restrictor plate but that is the only part of the sportsman rules being used. You can run your regular carb, velocity stack and clutch shoes. Not much to change on the car so it will have little impact on you the racer as far as setup from a normal race day.

Well, I have 17 drivers so far and that's including myself(God help them). I met with the R.O.G.N. committee on Monday and told them that I was having a very hard time this year ,getting drivers for some reason. I'll be hitting the phone and trying to get a total of 23-24 drivers.
Today I was invited to the Boys and Girls club in Royal Oak and some of the kids were designing and painting bodies. I did a short presentation on our
1/4 scale cars, showing them the basics of these big cars. They had a photographer/reporter from the Daily Tribune there to interview the kids and myself about the race. Then we went into the room where the kids were painting bodies.....! The kids vary in age from 10 to 17 ,boys and girls. Mike Auger from Auger Auto Body, showed the kids how to spray paint more evenly and I showed the kids the trick of doing their designs on the protective cover with a Sharpie pen.
Yes, some of the cars look, shall we say "different"! But after meeting the kids and helping them out, I will be proud the to race any car body they do!

Please, if you can make it to this years race, I need to hear from you as soon as possible. I am writing the "bio's" for the newspaper and the drivers auction and I have to turn them in by Monday 8/13. I can add drivers at the last minute if we need too.
I can't thank enough the guys from the Great lakes club ,for jumping in again to get our car count up. Randy Brown, Fred Murry, Randy Baker(this years race director) and Jim Bell for getting the word out about the race.

I had a frank discussion with Brent from the Boys and Girls club. Brent took over the committee portion of the R.O.G.N. and is the one getting the sponsors for the race. I let him know about the diffuculties getting drivers and we are trying to figure out what we can do to maybe ,"change up" the race itself. One idea is to maybe take the race off of the Woodward Dream Cruise weekend and move it up to September. This would make it a stand alone event again and we would get a bigger and better piece of ashphalt right next to Woodward. We also kicked around the idea of including Sprint cars in a "Bankers Challenge" using 10-12 local banks/financial companys to put on a Sprint car race on Friday night under the lights and the stock car show on Saturday.
And Yes, one thought is maybe the 1/4 scalers don't wish to continue this race. I certainly hope that isn't the case. This race is very important to the charity drive, but at the same time gets 1/4 scale racing out in front of the public, where our "biggest secret in racing" gets seen.

O.K., now that I have the plea out of the way ,let me explain how we do things for this race.
Any QSAC legal stock car/driver is eligible to race, G.N., Sportsmen,or Novice. The general G.N. rules apply, you may run lighter clutch shoes, any legal intake, any legal carb, any legal motor. All the cars run a Sportsman restictor plate, this evens the field a bit, but the more experienced drivers do tend to find speed with their set-ups and driving style. But remember, speed isn't everything...you have other cars on the track too.
We have an $50 entry fee ,only to lock in a car count. Every driver gets a check for $190 whether you run 1st or last. We pay a portion of our fuel bill ($10 each, hence the $190 and not $200) and the charity picks up the rest. We went to a "spec" fuel a couple years ago when we noticed some odd smells during the race. Again, this was done to keep things equal. So yes, you get paid $140 to race. This is meant to help with travel costs and get out-of-state racers to come to Royal Oak.
The info I ask for on the entry forms, is so I can write mini biography's of each driver for the Daily Tribune newspaper. Yes, a circulation of 30k-40k people read about 1/4 scale , the race and you. We also use the bio's for the drivers auction party the Wednesday before the race. The sponsors come to Mark Ridleys Comedy Castle in Royal Oak for a dinner and afterward we have a professional auctioneer take the stage. He uses the bios and additional info from me to get the sponsors to bid high for drivers. Some can go for as high as $1200 and as little as $100. This combined with the $550 each sponsor pays to enter, tends to raise quite a bit. That is why we like to get 24-30 drivers/sponsors...do the math!
After the auction is our time to shine, we show up to the site early and get the track assembled and the driver pitted in. The guys from Billings lawn and garden and the guys from Worry Free Landscaping volunteer their time and get the track ready for us. The ashphalt is cleaned (it's a grocery store lot ) the computor wire is cut in and taped down before we open the track for practice, usually by noon. The bodies are delivered as early as we can get them and the guys get right to mounting them up and adding spoilers. Drivers hit the track right away and start dialing in their cars. We shut down around 5:00 for dinner with the sponsors and committee. Eveyone gets their all-important check and a thank you.
Most guys go right back to practicing, but some wander off toward Woodward and the constant stream of classic aand muscle cars thundering by or the local sights.
The pit area is more open during Friday, so the sponsors and locals tend to wander through and see what's going on. Saturday the pits are closed to outsiders. This gets hot race cars and busy drivers a little more room.
Saturday the place just seems to come alive early. We get the track ready and open up to controlled practice. We have a mandatory drivers meeting and roll the cars through tech. Each driver then does the old school qualifying, 2 laps warm up and 4 timed laps to set the heat races. Time is tight, but we do get a chance to make some final practice runs.
The drivers line up along the track by the grand stands and are introduced with their sponsors. The national anthem gets played or sung (Miss Oakland County last year) and we start with a 75 lap Charity service clubs race. This is groups like the Rotary club, Lions, Chamber of Commerce ...ect. After that race the computor is wiped clean and we do our normal heat races, usually 35-50 laps ,two rounds to set the mains.
We sort into "D" "C" "B" and "A" mains with 4 drivers bumping up from the previos race.
The D is 50 laps, the C is 50 laps ,the B is 75 laps and the A main Royal Oak Grand National is 150 laps. The B and the A are really something to see. In the B the guys know they need to get to the front cleanly to bump up . The guys in the A are really something to watch. How they pick and choose where they can pass, how smooth they are on and off the throttle, and how they get through traffic is what gets them to the A main. Agressive drivers tend to spin more often , and the smooth guys seem to come out on top. Yes, sometimes emotions run high and the bumping and banging fenders happens. As per QSAC rules the cars involved will be put to the tail of the field, no exceptions! I failed to do this a couple times and it bit me in the butt. We try to see every incident, and sometimes miss every aspect of a crash. We will do our best to set things right.
This race is something every 1/4 scale driver needs to experiance. So many great drivers have raced here, Carrol Cheeks (WCM) ,Jon Rahe (RACO) Roger Newel (7 time winner), Rick Binniker(WCM) ,Tom Hargrave, Tom Urban, Randy Erb, Chuck Beaman (Lightning)Tony Nessinger, to name a few. Every manufactor has gotten here, WCM, T-Bolt, Lightning, Pro1 ,Grame Cracker ,and last year the Disruptor.
Now, it looks like something you wanna' do ,right?

Great Job Bryan I Would Like To Thank You And Anyone Who Helped Put On This Race. I Had A Great Time This Weekend. Saw Some Great Racing In The A Main Especially When Roger Had To Make His Way Back To The Front After A Crash. Great Job By All Drivers Through Out The Whole Race.

Ditto that hobbyten. The results with all the lap times and how they qualified is on the GLQSR website. I will add pictures as soon as I can. Great job everyone and i sure hope we can do this for the 20th year and beyond.

Thank you Roger Newel for your help and it was great meeting you! Your advice and help is much appriciated.

I guess I can start by saying I had a really good time this year, part of that would only have been possible with Randy Baker's help. He took the reins and race directed for us and with a firm hand kept the day running smoothly.
We had a ton of problems with our aging J-Lap scoring system, everything from dropped laps to mixed up car#s. The system would "check" fine and when the green flagged dropped it went into stupid mode!
The highlights were the perfect weather, action packed racing, crowds cheering and some of the best drivers in QuarterScale.
I can't thank enough the efforts of so many people. My wife Deb, struggled with the scoring and got through the day (BTW, she had to go to work at 4:00 a.m. after the race). Randy Baker's efforts, John Colosky and Jim Bell pitching in to fix computor problems, Randy Brown ,QSAC national tech director, Fred Murry, getting the crowd rilled up and into bidding on a trophy we all signed and auctioned off, Terry Reniger for mixing our spec fuel all day, Mike Reniger for helping me decipher the heat finishes ,so we could set the mains, Marv Thomson, for jumping in with his lap top comp., to get us through qualifying, and Mark Aldrich and Brent Gottfried our QSAC co-chairs for all their ideas and imput.
Many of our club members put a great deal of time into getting racers to sign up for this years event, even then we couldn't get quite as many as we needed. The charity raised roughly $15,000 with sponsor entries and driver bids, so the with the main idea being a fund raiser, then it was a success, the race itself was a bonus.
Watching the finish I was torn between Roger racing for the win for Billings first victory, Brent Gottfried streaking through the field and taking the lead so close to the finish only to come up short again, and Mark Aldrich overcoming a rooftop slide and working his way back to third (Man, Mr.Chamberlaine wants that win bad), and the strong runs by the rest of the A" main field.
Again, Thank You to all who participated , and to those who couldn't make it, pictures don't justify the feeling and excitement of this race. From the racing , announcing, the crowds cheering ,the whole Dream Cruise crazyness going on around us and Quarter Scale racing right there in the middle of it all!

Bryan:
I will start off the deal for next year by saying I'm in for it again. In whatever capicity I can help, racing a borrowed car to crowd control or what ever. I wouldn't miss it. I have been there for 9 or 10 years now and I always enjoy the event and the people that come to the Royal Oak grand national. I feel it only proper to thank you and Debbie for the amount of effort that you both put into this event. Thanks to the other support people that helped out such as Randy Baker, John Closky and the others.
The scoring system had its problems and you and I were a victum. You bowed out and let me transfer and I thought that to be very gracious of you. Thanks for letting me do a little better for my sponsor this year. Maybe I can return the favor one day.
I really wish we could have gotten the other drivers needed to cover the other sponsors, again maybe next year. I am sure we can have a great race again next year, at least I am planning on it.

I don't understand it. There should be a waiting list to get in this race. Where else can you race with a grandstand full of people that ooh and aah over every pass for the lead and every spin. And get paid almost four times your entry fee. And get to take in the world's largest car cruise. You guy's are missing it!

Oh yeah, poeple would kill for your reserved parking spot, 200 feet off of Woodward Ave.

I will guarantee that the form will be available for 2008 over the winter. Let's get as many racers committed as possible as soon as possible. The 20th running of the ROGN should be a land mark event.

You would not believe how many folks came up to me and just wanted to know more about these cars and what they can do. I have to say, probably 1 out of 10 were interested in getting into ¼ scale racing, so this is a perfect opportunity to grow the sport. All these people are from all over the united states, it's not just a local event.

All you 1/4 scale manufactures should make this a MUST goto event. you have no idea the amount of exposure you can get from this one event, not to mention the great time you'll have...
