Greetings everyone, I need some tips on rebuilding a 1998 Briggs and Stratton 20hp Opposed twin engine, this is my first time working on one of these engines and im scared I will do something wrong and basicaly waste more money ^_^. Im going to be replaceing rings, reseating valves, rebuilding carb, and replacing all seals. So can someone tell me how hard it is to work on these and if theres anything hard or tricky I will run into?
I know I can come here if I have a problem but I understand we all have lives hahaha.
Thanks guys, once I get started I will have some pics up.

It seems like it could be a little intimidating, but the opposed twins are like working on 2 single cylinders back to back with just one crankshaft.

Check everything like you would if you were rebuilding a single cylinder engine, make sure the valve seats are not loose in the block, check the valve lash, make sure the timing marks are lined up on the camshaft.

The carburetor is a little different, but the principle is the same, make sure it is good and clean and that the fuel pump on the carburetor is good to go.

Just play close attention to what you are doing and everything will work out.

Good Luck....

Thanks 30year, you were right again its not that hard and looks alot harder then it is.
Ok so tonight I started stripping down the engine so I can lift it off of the tractor. I got stuck at the flywheel because I ran out of compressed air for my impact.

Valves don't look to bad from what I can see now, I was expecting alot worse.

Ok well tonight I ran into my first problem, with removing the flywheel. I got the nut off ok, but that damn thing would just not come off, I used my craftsmen puller but that broke. What should I try next? A genuine briggs puller? would that be better? Maybe a Can of Freeze off would help. thx

The Briggs puller will probably be your best bet.

Well to make a long story even longer the flywheel puller is on its way so I took the engine off and popped off the back plate and of course the top cylinder is shot...The sleeve was brown and scored, the connecting rod was missing bits of metal..and well basicaly not even worth rebuilding so im going to look for a used engine block. Thanks 30 year for you help and its an example of what happens when you don't change you oil ever! If anyone wants sticky gray sludge thats more like pudding..I have alot in a jar ^_^!!!
