View Full Version : Question about 'Dead Like Me'
Bruce Bishop 07-07-2007, 04:44 PM I have watched a couple of the episodes, and parts of a few more. I understand that the blond girl (George?) is dead and a Grim Reaper, and that she hangs out with other Grim Reapers, apparently in a restaurant and/or an office.
Can ONLY other Reapers (and other dead people) see and speak to her? Or is she seen and spoken to by living people? And if so, do they see her as her when she was alive, or do they see someone who looks different?
She was narrating a scene with her and a friend talking with her dad, but with her dead, and her father not dead, I don't know why the guy wasn't freaked out.
Can someone give me a simple, understandable synopsis of the 'rules' work in that show? So far I have not been able to figure it out, and the stories always end up confusing me, even though some of the individual scenes in an episode seem to make sense to me.
JGG1701 07-07-2007, 04:50 PM Sure , no prblem............................................ ..........................
   IT'S ONLY A T.V. SHOW!!!
Bruce Bishop 07-07-2007, 05:03 PM In other words.....you don't know the answers either?
Eric K 07-07-2007, 06:03 PM Living people see her as someone different. She has to hold a job and make money like everybody else. So, she interacts with people completely. They just see a different person than the other reapers do.
Bruce Bishop 07-07-2007, 06:21 PM Thanks for that info. I was never sure if the people she interacted with were alive or dead (except when somebody just terminated).
Johnnycrash 07-07-2007, 07:04 PM George is dead, and a reaper. Her true, as she was alive, self is seen ONLY by the dead, and fellow reapers. And they call here George. In the rest of the world, she is known a Millie, and looks like this. http://tv.infinitecoolness.com/10/deadlike05.jpg Even though she is dead, she must survive like any other living person - job for rent and food and such. Roxy is a Cop. Mason a con and thief. Daisy lives off the kindness of others, and Rube... I can't remember. Millie (George) works at the same place George did, Happy Time. A temp agency. She can be injured, but not killed. And she heals/repairs 100%. She cut a finger off at work one time with the paper shredder. It hurt, but healed/grew back. She and the group she hangs with (at a waffle house) are Freak Accident Death Reapers. We also see Pet Reapers, Peaceful Reapers, and Hospital Reapers. Their territories occasional overlap.
You must see this from start to finish. It's funny, witty, and just plain good. It's got morals, and lack of them, course language, and some nudity, but not frontal. You will laugh, and learn. And laugh some more.
Griffworks 07-07-2007, 07:09 PM The gist of it is that when she died and became a Reaper, her body effectively became immortal. She still has to eat, sleep, use the restroom and all that, but she can't be killed and - IIRC - doesn't feel pain. Or at least, it never really shows any of the Reapers responding to what would often be painful wounds.
On the issue of how she interacts, she's just like everyone else in the Real World where interaction is concerned, for the most part. She apparently no long really looks like the real George to her friends and family - pre-death - but everyone else sees her as such. I don't recall for sure, but I think that her younger sister can see her real appearance after several episodes, but I was distracted while the episode was on, so don't recall with any clarity.
As a side note, the girl who plays the "George" that her family and old friends see is played by the sister of the actress who plays George.
EDIT: wrote mine while John was writing his above mine. I forgot to mention the thing he did about type of Reaper George and her buds are. Good call on all that extra stuff, too, John!
Johnnycrash 07-07-2007, 07:30 PM IIRC - doesn't feel pain.Oh, they can feel pain. Mason was a druggie and a real heavy partier, and still is. And in many eps, he is hungover, and in a lot of pain.
As a side note, the girl who plays the "George" that her family and old friends see is played by the sister of the actress who plays George.OK. I can't follow this sentence. If I read it right, the character of Millie is played by actress Ellen Muth's (George) real-life sister?? Georgia Lass is played by Ellen Muth, and Millie is played by Laura Boddington.
EDIT:I forgot to mention the thing he did about type of Reaper George and her buds are. Good call on all that extra stuff, too, John! It's one of those little things that they don't talk about. It just is. I love the way that the people die. I mean, you almost NEVER see it coming.
BTW, one of the Peaceful Reapers is played by Yeardley Smith. One of the great voices of the Simpsons. Anyone remember "Herman's Head"???
razorwyre1 07-07-2007, 08:08 PM the series has quite a following, and while some things, like the idea that george does indeed interact with the living, but looks different to them (so she cant be recognized by people who knew her in her former life) are clearly explained (at least in the pilot), other things are left purposely ambiguous. theories abound about some things that are implied but never explained, and other things that are just hinted at... like are kiffany (the waitress) and crystal (george's rather strange co-worker) themselves reapers? apparently the biggest debating point among the fans is what the significance of der waffle haus might be, if anything.
one thing i love about the show is that although the means of death are usually comical, even zany, death itself, and its implications are always taken very seriously.
its a shame that the series didnt carry on longer, on the other hand, it probably wouldnt have taken too much longer before the show started spinning its wheels and shark-jumped.
thge best thing to do is find a video club that rents the first season box set and rent it (thats how i got into it, and accidentally hooked my friend tom on it as well)
Trek Ace 07-07-2007, 09:20 PM I talked with Ellen Muth a few months ago and she said that there is a possibility of yet another Dead Like Me show (a two-hour special, etc.) in the works. So, it may not be over, yet.
I really loved the show. I found it to be refreshingly original and very funny. It deserved more than just two seasons.
Eric K 07-07-2007, 09:30 PM Sci-fi channel runs it often. I want to get the uncut set though. I always miss the pilot episode where she dies and is intitiated into the ranks of the reapers. I have the whole marathon on tape (minus the hour that "Burn Notice" was on). but, the whole show was very well done. I forgot about the other reapers and their specialties.
CaptFrank 07-08-2007, 06:31 AM I thought her name was "Georgia" not "George".
Ohio_Southpaw 07-08-2007, 08:23 AM I thought her name was "Georgia" not "George".
Her name is Georgia, but she is called George as a nickname.
razorwyre1 07-08-2007, 08:37 AM i dont watch the re-runs. i cant imagine this show with the language "sanitized for our protection".
chiangkaishecky 07-08-2007, 10:20 AM I can't say I'm terribly fond of the "cute" practice by "clever" TV writers giving their female characters gender-ambiguous names/nicknames.

No, not really. :(
Griffworks 07-08-2007, 11:03 AM Oh, they can feel pain. Mason was a druggie and a real heavy partier, and still is. And in many eps, he is hungover, and in a lot of pain.
Oh? I guess I never caught on to that. There are two or three times that I recall George being "damaged" - such as when the manager of the Der Waffle Haus was killed and George had some piece of metal sticking in her. She didn't immediately realize she was "pierced".
OK. I can't follow this sentence. If I read it right, the character of Millie is played by actress Ellen Muth's (George) real-life sister?? Georgia Lass is played by Ellen Muth, and Millie is played by Laura Boddington.
Whoops, my bad. A friend of mine who's watched the series two or three times claimed that "UnGeorge" ("Millie") was played by Ellen Muth's sister. Mea culpa. I gotta check my facts before just believing other folks - no matter how cute and smart they might be. :o
It's one of those little things that they don't talk about. It just is. I love the way that the people die. I mean, you almost NEVER see it coming.
There's a guy I worked with that would come in to my office when I worked Swings and DLM would air. We'd watch closely to see if we could figure out how the person(s) were slated to die. I guess we were about 50/50 on our guesses. It was fun, albiet rather morbid....
BTW, one of the Peaceful Reapers is played by Yeardley Smith. One of the great voices of the Simpsons. Anyone remember "Herman's Head"???
Y'know, I never caught on to the Peaceful Reapers thing. Shows how many episodes I've seen, I guess. I tried to catch all the ep's when it was being played on the SciFi Channel, but ended up missing a lot of them when I Deployed the last time.
Eric K 07-08-2007, 12:54 PM Actually, Georgia and Regina are feminine names. And, i have know several of them that go by the masculine nicknames. Not all that unusual in this case.

Never said they weren't ... I sometimes erroneously use "/" as "and/or" as in names AND/OR nicknames.
I'm surprised there aren't more Philipas in pop culture since Phil is such a natural diminution.
And, i have know several of them that go by the masculine nicknames. Not all that unusual in this case.
I don't care ;)
I watched Fuller's "Wonderfalls" BEFORE I saw a single ep of "Dead..". I thought the female protagonist in "Wonder.." had an unusual first name "Jaye" ... then I saw "Dead" where the lead character is almost exclusively referred to as "George".
Two points don't describe a trend but Fuller's new show "Pushing Daisies" features ANOTHER female lead whom, I'll bet, will be mostly referred to "Chuck" short for Charlotte!??
Anyhoo ... anybody remember "Trapper John, MD" and the actress Christopher Norris ... that was cool because back then it wasn't commonplace.
I'm shocked that James King stopped being cool and went back to Jaimie (at least professionally ... I'm sure her buds still call her Jaimes/James).
spe130 07-09-2007, 01:52 AM Then there is Joss Whedon's Firefly, where a male character has a feminine name - Jayne. (and I actually know a really cute girl who spells her name the same way - I've posted a pic of her in a TOS minidress before... ;) )
CaptFrank 07-09-2007, 02:08 AM and I actually know a really cute girl who spells her name the same way - I've posted a pic of her in a TOS minidress before... ;)
Post it again!
Post it again!!

actually you have touched on one of the main themes of the show. georgia was totally ambiguous about everything. she didnt care about anything until she died and everything was taken away from her.

The same goes for her mother. Joy Lass is her name, and she is almost always depressed, so the play on her name was certainly built in by the writers from the start.
CaptFrank 07-10-2007, 12:10 PM Looks like the Science Fiction channel is showing
"Dead Like Me" all day today.
A chance to get some questions answered!
razorwyre1 07-13-2007, 07:56 AM a friend text messaged me yesterday to say that a direct to video dead like me movie has been greenlit. george will be back, rube wont, and daisy will be recast. consider this only a rumor so far. im going to search for confirmation.
razorwyre1 07-13-2007, 08:00 AM CONFIRMED! a number of sources, the most important being ellen muths myspace page.
by the way, bryan fuller will not be helming it.
