EDIT: I didn't know until I looked it up (after I created this thread) that not only is Nick Fury black in Marvel's "Ultimates" universe, but is in fact modeled on Samual Jackson. The thread header was an attempt at humor toward what I assumed would be "outrage" among certain fanboys that the character's race had been changed from the comics. Shows what I know.

"AICN EXCLUSIVE! Guess Who’s Shooting His IRON MAN Role Today!!

Okay. This is a pretty big tidbit, and as far as I can tell, this is an exclusive. I haven’t seen any mention of this anywhere online, but it’s exciting news, and I have to share it with you guys.

Right now, if I had to wager on whether or not IRON MAN was going to be one of next summer’s big films, I’d say it will be. It seems like Jon Favreau has done everything right so far, and I’m hearing really exciting things about the action sequences and the casting, and I’ve been sold on Robert Downey Jr. since the moment he was announced.

Today, though, he’s shooting scenes featuring an actor who is a set-up for a larger Marvel continuity, and it’s exciting because I’m hoping this character can start showing up in other films, and we’ll start seeing Marvel Studios creating a larger world, one that exists outside the frames of the individual movies. This is a major step towards making that AVENGERS movie we’ve been hearing about. So who’s the actor? Who’s the character?

Sam Jackson. Nick Fury.

Count on it."

Yeah, I as a bit miffed when I originally saw "Ulitmate Avengers" back in March of '06. Why in the world would you need to change the race of the character? I mean, part of the cornorstone of Nick Fury is that he was a frontline troop during WWII as a non-comissioned officer - Sgt Fury. As most military history buff's know, there weren't that many black folks on the front lines of WWII and there weren't many black non-com's, either - it just wasn't done*. I saw this as one of those "no need to do this!" sorta things and was upset for a week or so afterward. I hate change just for the sake of change!

However, it didn't take long before I realized that this wasn't the "main stream" Marvel 'Verse and unclenched. The primary realization came after reading some of the background for these animated movies, namely that it's a re-write - or re-imagining, if you will - of the Marvel 'Verse. Nick Fury in this Ulti-'Verse probably started out his military career in Vietnam, I think. With that main tidbit in mind, I quickly resolved my personal issues and accepted him. In fact, there are some aspects I think work better for the Ulti-'Verse with this Fury than the "real" Fury likely would have.

Anyhow, I've not seen the second "Ultimate Avengers" movie. Anyone else see it and care to give their (spoiler-free) thoughts?

*NOTE: I'm not a racist - far from it - but am an amateur military history buff. It's a sad fact of history that racism was rampant at that time in American history. While it's not as good as it could be for non-whites, overall it's a lot different than it was 60+ years ago.

Well, to be fair, that phrase is kinda associated with Samuel Jackson and his movies. The mods can delete it if it's objectionable, no offense was meant.

Regardless, Hank's policy is always in effect. While I normally don't have a problem if it's "xx'd" out for a quote in context to the discussion at hand, there really wasn't a need to just throw that out there. Please don't do that again.

Official warning, you're on parole for the next week.

Thanks.

Understood. The point I was trying to make humorously was I'll be curious to see what kind of Samuel Jackson-ish line they work into the Ironman script.

And you know they will.
