Do YOU like it?

If you like it, keep it.

If you're looking for collector value, the best way to find out is to auction it off on ebay, but when you find out what it will sell for it's too late to decide if you want to sell it.

Some big help I am, eh?

The best rule of thumb for slot cars - Buy what you like. If you're not sure how much you should pay then ask the members what they think. Then race it!

I have the same thing. I think it's a keeper more than the other white lightnings because of the shortness of the run where the body isn't white also. If you want value keep it in the case or clampac, opened can be construed as put together to make a buck. Go get a regular yellow one if you want to run one.

Mike I try to follow what going with slot cars. There are lots of knowledgeable poeple in the slot forum. But there is a lot of code talk, that make it differcult for newbie to be to enter the world of slots. When I was young was I had electric car and train sets. And my boys (five of them ages 35yrs.- 1 month) love all cars (Big,little, old, new, good, bad, or ulgy) and I do too. I have chose to buy things that interest me, and my family. One of my son wants to build a track. Also I buy all kinds of decast ( cars, planes, trucks, big & small). Going by my previous posts, most should show I am a diecast fan. Not a fanatic. My gorgeous little slot car I plan Keep unless one of my boys wants it more than me. I don' t plan race it , but did spot a batmobile slot car that could see some action.

Thanks for your reply Hartracerman :)

Hey you make a good point here. I have tons of Diecast 1/18, 1/24, 1/32 and many other car, truck, motorcycle collectables to name a few. It is possible to have many, many hobbies and interest. Also like Pabst Blue Ribbon signs, old toys and Comic books (Ghost Rider rules!).

As for myself most of the time I am in slot car collector mode but, always keep a eye out for anything else (mostly car stuff) that catches my eye.

Hey you may want to make room on that layout for a "Bat Cave" roachmobkiller.

Roachie.....

Sorry if I came off as a smart alek in my post.I was at Toys Are Us earlier this afternoon to pick up an X Box 360 game, and you cant even as much as look at the diecast anymore with out some loser that patrols the store for collectibles giving you dirty looks and following you around the store. Not implying that you do that, but colecting diecast used to be a lot of fun,now I have to worry about even looking at the stuff without having to get in a fist fight.

I used to collect diecast seriously.I had a huge collection of redline HW's that I sold off when the selling was good to finance my slot car layout.

Tell you what, you say you have some boys that express an interest in racing slots?????? I have a huge beer box full of Tyco track that you are welcome to.Nothing great, but its something to mess around with.If you would like, cover the shipping and its yours.

Again, sorry if I came off the wrong way.

Mike my boys are 35, 30, 26, 4 and 1 month. The last two are grandsons. The four year old would destroy anything he gets. He has a radio controled hummer that he run wild with. Thirty year old wants to the build the track. The thirty five year old is a diecast fool (cars and planes). He has thousands of diecasts mostly jl. Been collecting for ten years. The twenty six year old is a computer nerd. Thank for the offer, but these guys have motorcycles, four wheelers,a motor scooter, cars and trucks. Not from me they work construction and are paid good.
I sometime I see people destroying diecast displays and making a mess. I takes the fun out of it. Decent people can get along. Those boys have got the fireworks out. Have a good 4th. my friend. :)

Mike,

I know where you are coming from. I used to be a die cast collector and started out with HWs before that Price Guide deal came out. Putting prices on collectibles just ruined it for me. I still collect some Die cast but, now just the ones that really jump out at me. When I started collecting HWs some one early on told me about variations and thought that was kinda cool. Then the price guide came out and everyone and their Grandma started to collect them. What a mess........Grrrrrrrrrrrr

After dumping off all my HWs I switched to JLs and the White Lightning crap started. I am just tired of companies coming out with so called "Rare" cars that as a collector you are being told to get as it is a collectible.

Had slot cars as a kid and have been collecting them now for a long, long time. Got Bob Beers slot car book and was glad to see that the cars were rated by rarity and not by the $$$$$$ all mighty dollar value $$$$$$. Thanks Bob Beers for saving our hobby!!!! The guy that started JL (Tom Lowe) is now trying to use the name Auto World to start the people that are fed up with the die cast collecting mayhem to move on over to the slot car collecting.

This is all fine and dandy but, collecting a rare slot car to me is one that is old and hard to find. They don't all have to be Rare to be in my collection. If I like the way it looks like a Common AFX 55 or Datsun pickup...Bam on my track or in my case it goes.

There are lots of slot car people offering resin cars that, with a little work, can be customized to each persons taste. I will not pay $$ Big Money $$ just because the dang thing is painted White. When the clear Red with red chassis AW cars came out I thought that maybe good things were on their way cause the price was right and they look very cool and came with a neat Vintage type AW patch. Ooooooh Dang....more Jump through hoop crap to get people to buy cars that they believe are collectible.

Some people might get mad at this post (the ones with the white slot cars) but, I am just telling you that there are sooooooooooo many other slot cars out there that , in my opinion, people get the idea after they buy a bunch of a certain type of slot cars....they need to keep collecting just those cars to make their collection better. NOT!!!

Am sure that some one will back me up on this. Not saying not to buy cars from certain Mass Producers but, you don't have to have every one of them to have a nice slot car collection. After spending all your money though you just can't afford any of the others and your wallet is now emptied. Well after a while Mr. Billfold starts to slowly recover and then "BAM" that Mass Production company that took all your money before has more cars and they want to sell you them all.

Nobody will probably ever talk to me again after this post but, this is how I feel that many collectors are being sucked in. I like to play the slot car field with Old AFX, t-jet, Reproductions, Tyco Pros, Customs, and yes even (some) Auto World cars.

In no way am I saying in this post that Mike feels the same way about every thing I just blabbed on about.

Hate me now and hate me later, Bob

Bob, you're a good fellow and right on target - the "collectibles" game is played with so many things, and the price guides are obsolete as soon as they're printed.

My view is pretty simple. If someone can mass produce as many as they want in any variation, but choose to make a only few - what value is that? They could flick the switch tomorrow and make 10,000 more.... If you have a first edition/first run from an old factory that can't be reproduced, that's at least a collectible. However, I learned a lot about "book" price and what things actually change hands for fooling a little bit with 50+ year old Lionel trains. Price guides - a necessary evil, or a once-a-year racket? Those books don't give you the "I'm sitting on a high dollar item I need to move with only an hour left in the show" price LOL.

I've got some things I that I treasure and consider collectible. No comparison to made-in-China slot cars that have some parts molded in different colored plastic. Not a dig on the product - some of the stuff is neat. I actually BOUGHT an AW Studebaker drag car - but if I were buying something just to have a full set, I'd buy state quarters. From what I've seen some are rarer than others around here, but they all cost the same, and are worth the same if you want to turn them over!

I hate the term collectable. Back in the day you would get some money as a kid and go down to your local hobby shop and by a slot car or two. As life goes on you forget your cars until one day you think of the pleasure they gave you as a kid. Now, if Mom and Dad didn't chuck them out with the trash your in luck. If they did you are on the hunt to find the cars you had a kid. Then you start looking for the ones you didn't have. So today you are looking for those that survived a life of play or never made it that far and are still in the package. That is what a true collectable is . Those that survived play and are still here today. Not this lets make them white or blue. With any slot cars I purchase I must like them. If I do I keep them. Are they worth more than others? Maybe but if I like them then they Priceless. Slot cars will have a short life as a collectable. As the guys that race them age they will come to the point where they will sell them off. Who will buy them. Kid next door? No because he will be collecting things that he had as a kid and slot cars are not it. So as we age the slot car market will shrink and become smalller and smaller. In other words buy it because you like it. Not because of what it is worth or what it might be worth.
ALL I NEED IS AN OPEN ROAD AND A WHOLE LOTTA SPEED.

You guys said it. Glad nobody took what I said and turned it into me bashing a certain company negatively. My intent was just as SplitPoster an slotrod stated (like they were reading my mind) to just put things in real world prospective.
