View Full Version : Snl, S1
John P 06-30-2007, 08:44 AM The missus and I have been watching the first season of Saturday Night Live (1975!!).
Lordy, what flashbacks! Richard Pryor and Chevy in the word association test; Candy Bergen; Landsharks; Samurai Hotel, Generalissimo Francisco Frank is still dead! The all-nurse band; musical guests with huge fros (the Stylistics, Phoebe Snow, and people I've never heard of since 1975!). The "adult" Muppets bits. Emily Litella. And hardly a bra to be seen!
The politically topical humor - Hubert Humphry, mentions of Reagan's early presidential hopes, Chevy and all the Ford gags. Candy Bergen pushing the ERA and supporting the Gray Panthers.
It's bringing back memories (both good and bad - there are some parts of the 70s I'd rather not remember). I wonder what it's like for someone in their 20s or 30s to see this material. Will they even know what the heck is being talked about during Weekend Update and the social commentary routines? I barely remember half the references myself!
But holy crap - Belushi, Ackroyd, Chevy, Gilda et al - those guys were FUNNY. Yes, there was a time when SNL was actually FUNNY!
flyingfrets 06-30-2007, 09:21 AM I still love Belushi's rendition of Joe Cocker!
Zorro 06-30-2007, 10:31 AM I still love Belushi's rendition of Joe Cocker!
Spot on brilliant!
I rented the first season from Netflix and had a lot of the same assoctiations. But it was also interesting to see skits that fell flat on their faces, certain musical acts that were less than, um "hip", and the live-on-camera Polaroid commercials seemed oddly out-of-era. Still, a truly innovative show that changed the face of television and introduced the world to some great talents.
Griffworks 06-30-2007, 11:45 AM Killer Bee's! Greek Diner! Samauri Bakery!
Chevy Chase: Well, you don't really blow on it, that's just an expression that they use - Gotta go!

Oh God, that Polaroid commercial! My wife worked in the Two Guys camera department at the time the show was on, and sold many an SX-70. She was hysterical when Candy Bergen and Belushi stared talking about as such new, exotic tech!
John P 07-15-2007, 10:09 PM OMG, we just watched the Dick Cavitt episode (Jan 1976) and it was the one where they showed the first viewer-submitted super-8 movie. It was by my friend Harry! I remembered his was the first one shown, I was just waiting to see what episode it aired on. Back then there was a bunch of us who were friends and went to various art & film schools who hung out together and made little super-8 films. Harry is still the only one that got on TV. What a blast to see it again! (NBC never returned it to Harry, btw).
Oh, and, hearing references to the bicentennial is a heck of a hoot too.

Dave Hussey 07-16-2007, 10:25 AM Is this the season with the Superheroes party skit, Belushi as the Hulk walking out of the can while Wonder Woman waits outside?
One line in that skit was brutally funny!!
