Don't want Surfer without big daddy G, purple crown and all. The Galactus cloud thing seems pretty clearly established...maybe they'll pull out that old anthropomorphosis bit at the last minnit. That'd be cool. Then I'll go. But if he's basically a cross between V'ger and the Doomsday Machine thru the whole thing, pfft.

You?

Hated the first one with a passion. Basically a "lite" action-comedy with no memorable laughs or decent action sequences. Now they tackle what is probably the heaviest comic book story ever written. What Galactus looks like hardly matters. I have an 8 year-old daughter who wants to see it. So I guess I'm going. I'm cringing already.

Is Galactus going to be in the film ? I haven't heard and the previews don't allude to it. If so, this is going to be either very good or very bad depending on the fx. The cgi of the surfer's mouth movements in the trailer doesn't look very well done, tho the flying shots do. I'd very much like to see this succeed, especially after that rocky first one.

If they make Galactus worthy of that storyline...a being far beyond human ideas of good or evil; he just is, and does what he does...if they do that right, it could make him utterly terrifying when the FF realize what they're actually up against. That's got FAR more depth potential than anything they can do with the cloud. Maybe they've got FF3 in mind.

Thing needs his brow, too.

The rumor, which seems fairly well established, is that G is a nonphysical entity of some sort that goes around doing what G does. And the Surfer is there to herald something that is only eight days away. That appears to be a big ol' cosmic cloud, not unlike the one that zapped them with powers in the first flick. That cloud is assumed to be G...whether it's actually him, or whether he is inside of it, who knows.

However, someone pointed out that on one of the trailers, as huge shadow falls over Jupiter, for just a second it vaguely resembles G's big distinctive hat.

A"cloud" is probably the right way to go.

This hilarious "review" indicates that ol' hockey-stick head indeed appears as something other than a "cloud".

"I just came from a UK screening at Leicester square and Memflix couldn't be further from the truth.

First, I seriously doubt Memflix actually saw the film - there is not ONE thing in his lame "review" that is not in the trailers, or the novel. He is just a HATER who wants to be the first to dump on the film. I asked this bloke from Fox about other screenings and he said this was the first screening ANYWHERE, so I know Memflix is lying and trying to seem like he’s got the goods. Well, Memflix, you don’t. Now go away. To prove I actually saw the film, I will give away some spoilers – first, they show us shots of the real Galactus in this film. Not a cosmic storm, but the horned badass we all wanted to see. You see him several times. Another spoiler, the very end of the film (in the middle of the credits) promises a stand-alone SS movie. The Surfer has momentarily beaten Galactus and the last shot of the movie shows him hovering around earth. Want another one? Johnny steps up and becomes a real hero at the end of this one. He puts aside his selfishness and takes on ALL the FF's powers and beats the crap out of Doom. Want another one? The FF and the military manage to capture the Surfer at one point and the Surfer tells Sue about his past and about how she reminds him of his love on Zenn-La and how he serves as the herald in order to spare his world. The plot is straight from the origins of the Surfer – he has come to earth to prepare it for Galactus but the FF’s humanity re-awakens that last part of Norrin Radd within him. BOTTOM LINE: IT'S ALL IN THERE. Has this site become just a forum for whiny haters who just want to be "first" to dump on something? This film is COOL AS BALLS. Is this the R-rated Fan 4? No. Of course not. But who was asking for that? Does Memflix have some secret Sue Storm film he wants to shoot in his basement? This film is so much fun and is such a BIG step up from the first film. The action kicks ass and the FF step up to save the world. There are 5 BIG sequences, including one where they save our beloved London Eye from toppling into the Thames. That got a big reaction from this crowd. It's got the Fantasticar doing some great stuff, including a sweet bit where it splits into pieces to avoid Doom (who has taken the power cosmic). It's got a HOT Jessica Alba. Chiklis IS Ben Grimm. Memflix is just a hater. Go see the film. I had a great time, so will you."

I prefer a decent movie, which I don't expect. I will say, much as I love Jack Kirby's classic work, his art is a perfect example of "what works on the comics page, may not work so well on the screen". I guess we'll find out whether the movie Galactus looks like the terrible "eater of worlds" ... or whether he looks just plain terrible.

im just not sure.
i just read an interview with the director, and while on one hand he says he's listening to the critics of the first one, the more you read the more it seems like he's just paying lip service to those critics and he really thinks he did a pretty good thing the first time out. this in and of itself does not bode well.

What'd you think of the short lived SS cartoon back about 10 yrs ago? Pretty Kirby-esque as i recall. And G wasn't treated like a punk, either.

According to rottentomatoes.com. bigwig Tom Rothman of FOX says, "I don't want to give too much away but I will say this: Galactus will appear and fans will not be disappointed."

My interest is piqued.

All I know is what I read online, which isn't much. One thing I hear they've done (true or not, dunno) is tie G's Power Cosmic to the cosmic rays that morphed the FF...don't recall that tie being made in the comics but have heard they did it here. IF SO, it might be interesting if exposure to SS's power accelerates Thing's condition, making him rockier and with that big forhead and all. That's what I'd do anyway, if I tied the two together.

But as soon as I wrote that, it reminded me of pre-dead Connor McCleod reacting to the Kurgan for the first time...kinda been there, seen it. Maybe not a good idea after all.

The Silver Surfer cartoon was great.
Can't say I knew a heckuva lot about the character prior to checking out the cartoon.
The best thing was the animation style which had Kirby's big fat black lines ... even on the 3D CG.

I never take online reviews seriously, not if I haven't heard from the person or if it's someone who approaches movies with from a vastly different perspective from me (that is, if I find them crazy). Besides, unlike on-the-record critics, who knows whether the person's review is from a nutjob or from a film representative.

I'm curious to find out what the "mainstream" critics will say about this movie. Unlike our previous nose-in-the-air critic, the new local movie reviewer is pretty in tuned with normal people's taste in movies. She also seems to have a soft spot for entertaining scifi and fantasy movies, so I find her reviews dead-on.

I have. I cut my teeth on the Kirby FFs back in the Sixties - specifically the Galactus Trilogy which the sequel is based upon - and I totally agree with his characterization of the "characterizations" in this franchise. A movie critic doesn't need to read the source material for any movie to judge whether it is a good or bad movie in his assessment. Spider-Man 1 and 2, Batman Begins, X-Men 1 and 2 - all of those recent superhero films got overwhelmingly good reviews, and I guarantee you most of the critics who wrote those positive reviews weren't "fanboys".

OK. Here is a review from AICN, and a clarification of the Memflix situation. Big purple G does appear, according to this report. I don't think it was necessary to insert Doom into the story, but c'est la vie.

I agree one does not have to be a fan to accurately review any flick, at least on technical grounds including characterization. On content, it sure helps...on everything else, doesn't matter, a movie is a movie.

Marvel did lend much richer detail to all their relationships, particularly Ben and Johnny. The FF movie scripts (both, apparently) cheap out on that, and it's to be lamented. No heart + great fx = lame movie. Weak acting on top of weak script surely don't help, leaving even non-fans like that guy feeling cheated. And he's got a right to it. So on all those points you're correct.

I was disagreeing with the reviewer's boneheaded comment on the quality of comic book paper...cheaper than cheap, sure, and thin. But brittle? Did someone hand this guy a browned 50 year old issue of FF that had been laying in the back window of a car all this time? (mmm, no, I doubt he's read even that much) It just struck me as a stupid remark for him to make, that's all.

Saw it yesterday. Far better than the first, but that wasn't hard to do. I didn't really have a big problem with Big G's depiction. An actual depiction of a guy as big as a mountain might not have worked, but what we see is sort a compromise. YMMV. My biggest problems are still the overall light tone of the script (especially considering the plot) and the portrayal of Doom as a petty, pretty boy. He's Doctor Doom, dammit!
