View Full Version : Pirates 3 - any comments?
ChrisW 06-05-2007, 12:52 PM Got to see Pirates 3, suprised there hasn't been a thread started on it already. Overall enjoyed the movie, even though we felt it was the weakest of the three. Very convoluted merging and crossing of stories, and it felt as if things were being made up as it went along to cover plot holes. At some points the CG character acrobatics challenged Van Helsing for physics-defying stunts.
Visually stunning, very rich sets, costumes and characters. There were new CG characters added to Davey Jones' crew, but they kind of got lost in the melee.
We went with friends, and when we talked about it afterwards it was suprising how we all saw or understood some parts, lines, or motivations but missed others...
fernieo 06-05-2007, 01:00 PM You nailed it, It was also way too long. I started dozing off about 2/3 of the way through...
terryr 06-05-2007, 01:33 PM I spent 8 bucks to have a nap.
It seems to me all of the '3rd' movies get a case of the cutes. Look at us, ain't we cute? Wink wink. When Keith Richards gives the best serious performance, something is wrong.
Another movie I won't see again.
iamweasel 06-05-2007, 01:44 PM My family enjoyed, while not the best of the 3 Pirates movies it sure was a fun ride.
A couple parts were not needed and/or over long but over all we felt it was good. Wouldnt mind going to see it again but we need to see Shrek 3 now.
Carson Dyle 06-05-2007, 02:01 PM I Hated it.
There's not a scene in the film you couldn't cut, and no one would be the wiser.
Fun ride? I'd rather have a root canal than have to sit through that movie again (and let's face it, root canals suck).
Of course, Pirates made over $400 million in three days, so whadda I know.
Lloyd Collins 06-05-2007, 02:02 PM It is a good movie, it still had the humor, and action. But it is the weakest, two was better. As Chris said about filling the plot holes, you could tell it was trying to answer the questions we had, but not as good as it could have.
Still a fun movie to watch, and Keith Richard's role was a good one. I think Jack was the best in the movie. Jack the monkey!
Zorro 06-05-2007, 05:47 PM When a 5 year-old and a 7 year-old start asking how soon the movie is going to end when it's not even halfway over - there's a problem. Don't know that I'd prefer a root canal - maybe a couple of shots to the head with a ball peen hammer.
aurora fan 06-05-2007, 08:02 PM I had a fun time and date enjoyed it too, but we both agreed it was too long. It seems all movies are pushing for the 3 hour mark. We also agreed we need to rewatch Pirates 2 to refigure some parts. Maybe thats what the director had in mind. Good show and lots of fun, cool stuff but much too long
TAY666 06-05-2007, 08:16 PM My daughter and I loved it.
Both of us feel it was better than 2, but not nearly as good as 1.
Didn't feel long to me at all. And this usually a guage I can read well.
Because if a movie doesn't hold me, I really start wanting to step outside for a smoke. Did have that problem while watching this when we saw it the Thursday before it opened.
El Gato 06-05-2007, 09:42 PM Both of us feel it was better than 2, but not nearly as good as 1.
I agree. I liked it better than 2, but I also felt you could easily cut an hour out of it and you wuldn't miss much.
DoctorG 06-05-2007, 10:14 PM I thought the myriad plot lines overly-confused the film and made it more tedious than it needed to be. Also, I thought there was less humor than in Pirates 1 or 2. I won't go see it again, but I'll probably pick-up the DVD to have the complete set.

crazy mike 06-05-2007, 11:52 PM (Looks at hole on shelf reserved for P3 DVD and slowly pushes Muppet Treasure Island into it.)
Lured in by the promise of what it should have been :(. It takes more than a few sight gags and wisecracks to save this stinker.
P1 was a steak dinner.
P2 was pizza with everything.
P3 was a sniff into the dumpster.
And the Oscar for best waste of interesting characters goes to--
AFILMDUDE 06-06-2007, 12:56 AM Horrible. Boring. Too long. Nothing new. Tedious. http://www.prisontalk.com/forums/images/smilies/banghead.gif I absolutely hated it!
I heard beforehand that there was an extra scene after the credits. Didn't care. Gathered the family and got out of there as fast as I could.
TAY666 06-06-2007, 12:18 PM Well, the extra scene at the end kind of lost it's meaning because they cut an earlier scene the movie. Without that earlier scene you have no idea what it means.
As for all the twists, and the complicated plot.
That is one of the things we really loved about this instalment.
It kept you guessing, and a little unbalanced.

I thought the extra scene made perfect sense. What was the earlier scene that was cut?

There was an earlier scene between Davey Jones and Kalipso that explained that if she would have remained faithful to him for the 10 years until he could step on dry land, then he would be free and able to live normally again. Which is what that green flash at the very end of the last scene represented. That Elizabeth had remained true, and Will's soul had returned to the land of the living.
BEBruns 06-07-2007, 09:48 AM That does change the meaning of the scene. On the other hand, I don't know if I would have wanted another 5 minutes of exposition added to the movie.
And besides:
I think the idea of the two of them only having one day together every ten years is a stronger, deeper conclusion.
Having a loophole feels like a dramatic cheat.
Ohio_Southpaw 06-07-2007, 01:08 PM My daughter, your typical 16 y.o. girl, convinced that Orlando Bloom is going to eventually marry her, was VERY unhappy about the ending. I think had we stayed around for the extra scene after the credits, she would have been much more satisfied.
