I have a 14 Hp Briggs and stratton motor, on my riding tractor...I have replaced the following..

Air Filter
Fuel Line
Fuel filter
Float Pin
Float
Starter selinoid
And cleaned The Crap out of the carb...

This is what I do know...The Choke does open and close ALL the way.

The problem is that it will not idle right, and when I put it in gear or Blades on, It backfires and tries to cut off, No matter where choke is. When I got it someone had ATEMPTED to clean the carb, so all i can think of it being is the following.

It also seems to be running rich to me, Burns gas WAY to fast.

Spark Plug
Oil looks good, But maybe need;s to be changed
Carb Is not SET correctly, causing Sir Fuel Mixture to be Incorrect?

This is all I can really think of..Any help will be apreciated, If it is the carb settings, Does anyone have a guide to how to set them on this motor? It is a 02 14 HP...

Thanks you!

-Jon

Take the air cleaner off the engine so you can see the intake of the carb. Start and let the engine run at high throttle, if you see gas fumes spirting out of the carb intake then your intake valve may be out of adjustment and not fully closing. If you don't see gas shooting out the intake then I would check the flywheel key and see if its broken or bent therefor messing up timing. Backfiring is caused by a lean mixture of gas to air.

I agree with justin3 although I think the best way to tell if the valves need adjustment is to check the valve lash. Try a new spark plug, you just cannot tell if they are good by looking at them.

Ok well I forgot to say that, At times it does idle and move fine...So that couldnt mean the valves are bad correct? sometimes, It will idle good, and run fine, then all of a sudden go through its spasm...But Its kinda weird to me

Valves out of adjustment can cause different results at various rpm's, it would not be a bad idea to check the valve lash just to be sure.

Did you adjust the fuel/air mixture? It could be the valves, but just to check off all the simple stuff first, start it, slowly turn the fuel/air jet screw inward until the engine almost dies. Then screw it out until the engine runs smoothly. Technically, it is supposed to be about 2-3 turns out. These jet screws are made out of brass or aluminum and they can get bent very easily. Make sure it isn't damaged as a bent jet screw can make the engine run either too rich or lean. Sometimes too much unburnt fuel entering the muffler- especially on a bigger engine with a bigger muffler can cause backfiring because the unburnt fuel will ignite.
