How HTF and how desirable do you guys rate this casting? I received this red seat Mercedes 230SL from ebay on friday. This is one of the less common skinny wheels issues and seems to be overlooked by many collectors who focus on purple 22 Pontiacs and 75 Berlinettas which have a bit more glamour but are possibly more common than this. This is probably the rarest SF that I own but it is one that I have wanted for years - the white with red séats and yellow with black seats cars covered many miles in my childhood playroom so I like this casting much more than the Pontiac which I didnt even know existed as a child or the Ferrari which I had as a green rw
This car appears to have been white and then oversprayed yellow which accounts for it being a much brighter shade of yellow than the standard black seat car

generally speaking most convertables from 68 forward have but a slim line of popularity amongst collectors, most just lack charm and emotion. personally i like the models boxes better than the toy itself. personally, i do not think this toy will ever command the value it lends itself to based on a scale of its avalibility, some models never will.....in terms of rarity useing a scale of 1 to 10....i would rate it a 5, 5 being somewhat hard to find, but no where near rare, but, no where close to common either.
a value i would afix to this model is 40 to 45 us dollars, but i am not sure i wuold pay that much, only because i am not that fond of convertables, and comparing it to its same era competition of other models at that price level.
its a shame, but in its context, one would think that if there were only 3 models in the entire world of somthing, it would be hugely rare, but if only 2 people desire the rarity. there is a 1/3 glut to the market of the toy which spirals the percieved value to the negitive of its known rarity scale, but if 5 people want the rarity, the value is as high as the sky.....so to speak.

Which is why the more common SF purple 22 Pontiac GP attracts double the money..............the 57 LandRover Firetruck is also more common but fetches a higher price

very nice, they do look cool on the carrier  . what i have in front of me is three white/cream and three light and dark yellow with black seats and two yellow with red seats. not an indication of rarity, more of a shade grouping.
do yours have the subtle interior variation, it is easier to spot by the center console width and length.
i’ll try and take a picture.
agree with you about the sf purple grand prix. not really a rare model, maybe more visibly appealing to non collectors.
the must have it now at any price is something i try not to do with any collectable. how many times have you seen the buzz about new models only to see them show up in quantity in the stores. if I recall it was the keddies bus a few years ago that was supposed to be a limited run, only to show up by the hundreds a few months later in department stores. years before the aral tankers were rare and expensive depending upon the seller who had them for sale.
the yesteryears in the eighties were so bloated that many left the hobby. couple that with those who didn’t care about the collectors and only wanted the money and you really have a mess.
