I have an 8 hp Briggs and Stratton engine in my John Deere Model 68 riding lawn mower. It worked fine for the first cut of the season, then yesterday, as I started it up, and put the throttle to the normal full running position, it died. Today, I set out to fix it. I checked and cleaned the air filter to no avail, it still performed the same. I couldn't find a new air filter at the auto part store so I tried to run it (briefly) without it, still the same. Then I noticed when I throttled up, the govenor caused it to shut down. After a while I was able to get it to run, although not smoothly, it kept revving, but it didn't even have enough power to turn on the mower deck. When I turn the govenor cam clockwise however, it will run smoothly to a decent RPM. Also I tried some carbeurator adjustments, and Idle speed adjustments, but nothing helped. I put in a new spark plug as well, and that didn't help either. Sorry for the lengthy post, I'm just trying to be as thorough as possible. Thanks for your time

Andy

You may have something in your carburetor that is restricting fuel flow. Try removing the float bowl and taking a look inside to see if there is any debris or water in the bowl.
