View Full Version : Sunday Vintage Rally...
tjd241 05-06-2007, 04:32 PM Been on a chassis clean-up kick for a couple weeks now, trying to smooth out and tweak some "motors" for a group of about 10 bodies. All short wheelbase favorites of mine now sporting new JW's press on aluminum hubs. Just finished up a short time ago and the results were  .... Always meant to have a good solid group to grab from when somebody comes over. Nothing worse than when a guest picks a dogged-out chassis with a nice body. Then you have to "on the spot" tune the littler squealer up. Now I have a pack of decent smoothies, so no worries which one gets chosen (by me or somebody else). I know some don't care for the look of these hubs, but they are not far from stock hubs and oooohhhh so much smoother!!! Even a beat up chassis runs better with them. All chassis were soaked to degrease and then rinsed, arms polished, gears deburred and lapped, new BSRT brushes and ski shoes, and not to mention oiled. I have another project brewing for a few more chassis that will get set up as Tuff Ones. That's a ways off, but I'm gathering together a line-up of bodies for that group in the meantime. I'd have to say my 2 alltime favorite chassis set-ups are SWB nos tjets and nos tjet chassis with a Tuffy wheel set. Both lightly modified and not too much mag power going on. Just right for my short twisty layout too. Thanks for looking.

SplitPoster 05-06-2007, 05:44 PM very nice looking job on those mevs, Dave! Track looks great too. Where do you source all your decals? Absolutely nothing in hobby shops down this way.
sethndaddy 05-06-2007, 07:13 PM Nice batch of cars there. I wish I had the time and skill of some of you guys.
Bill Hall 05-06-2007, 08:23 PM Too funny Dave,
I also have a MEV British invasion sitting, waiting, lonely. A Healey, TR, D-Type and an XK 120.
Unlike you, I havent had the motivation to complete them. I like to let Jimmy, grandson, run them. They're sitting on NOS chassis. Perfect 'lil cars for the youngsters, cute , light and tough as nails.
My excuse now is that I cant doll them up cuz he wouldnt be able to let loose on them. snicker...Pretty lame huh?
Kudos Dave, your awesome detail work is always inspiring. Nice addition to your fleet. Those are loaner cars?!!! If those were mine I wouldnt let anybody play with them! I'll be right over.
BTW I'll send you mine for completion........ so hurry the heck up!
.......Whats taking so long?!

tjd241 05-06-2007, 08:56 PM Basically SP I just grab's what I see's. I'm (still) a big fan of the old-school Autoworld sheets that some hobby shops seem to sell for years and years. You can mix and match those classics seven ways from Sunday. I also look through the sheet books at hobby stores for the bigger cars too. A lot of them have portions that the scale isn't too big for using as a sponsor for HO or for numbers they usually have usable things there too. You can also trim them so 1/24 or 1/32 double or triple stripes can be used for HO single stripes. A sharp hole punch makes meatballs for numbers by punching out of larger white decals or even using plain white decal paper. If I ever need some custom work I design them and bring my own paper to a local print shop guy and have them laser printed. It's such a rare day that someone comes in and asks the guy to do it that he gets a kick out of non-work related print jobs. He charged me like $8 for 2 8x10 sheets. Mostly though my stuff is from scavenger hunts. I mix and match as needed and always keep a sense of humor. The world does not need my version of a Penske Camaro too. Keep it fun, make it different, count me in!! This pair has ones I made, 1/24, and HO from those Auto world sheets.
Thanks for looking.... nuther dave
BTW.... I was hoping this would start a new HT members custom thread. Love see'in everybody's decaling/customs. Post'em if ya got'em fellas.

tjd241 05-07-2007, 04:53 PM Mike's Racer series really is a blast to work with. Gotta love those SWB tjets. I am also not opposed to painting and detailing an Aurora tjet, or any other brand body for that matter. I'm not saying I'd paint every one (I don't), but you know there were more than a few real doggies produced by all the mfgs'. I know, I know.... crazy talk! But hear me out.... I do not want and cannot afford anything that is so minty that I would not dare apply decals to it, run it often, or god forbid PAINT IT ! ! I unloaded my shelf queens a while ago and decided if it ain't gonna run, it ain't no fun. :p

Well said ND! Heck I run 'em all. Some more carefully than others, but they all get run. They can become shelf queens after I'm dead.
T-jetjim 05-08-2007, 10:03 AM Dave - Getting together a dependable set of racers for visitors is a great idea. When people come over and want to race, I just stare at my wall of cars trying to determine what will run well, what can I trust them with (no spoilers, wings, etc.!). Naturally, they run the car I give them for a few laps and then they want another one. Then the process starts all over. I think I'll rework my display to have the dependable racers all together.

tjd241 05-08-2007, 04:49 PM What we often forget is that slots are our passion. Heck, we'd run a turd around the track if it had a decent chassis under it!!! But, keeping things fun for a new person is really important if you don't wanna end up standing there all by yourself. A good selection is key to keeping it all interesting. I've found most people are pretty understanding when you tell them about the value of some of the cars, so if you are inclined to own a few shelf queens, just tell people and they'll go easy.
