View Full Version : What capped tire chassis..??
Kenwood 05-04-2007, 02:25 PM OK Im looking to run some cap tires this summer.. What chassis/why should I buy brand X over Y.. I realize Im opening a can of worms.. But just curious what the car of choice is on capped tires.. Money not being an object what would you buy??
EDIT.. Looking to run 4300BL..
pmsimkins 05-04-2007, 02:37 PM I'll summarize all the possible responses.
Buy the L4 they invented the pan car.
Buy whatever the majority use at the track you want to race.
Buy a Pro3 it won blah blah blah National.
Buy a Gen2 it won blah blah blah National.
Buy whatever you can get a good deal on, they all work the same.
For a serious answer I would say if you only want to race caps sporadically just stick with whatever you were most comfortable with on carpet. It's a lot easier to race occassionally when you're doing it with a car you have familiarity with, even if it is a different surface.
Kenwood 05-04-2007, 02:43 PM Leaving brands out of what I driving at I occasionally hear people say..
Car X Blows on carpet but is killer on caps..
I hear stuff like that all the time... Last year all I heard about the car I was running is***that car kicks butt on carpet but suffers on caps**
I run Silva cars and do fairly well with them or carpet>> But since I want to have a car SPECIFICALLY for caps I figured Id ask to see what most were running.. Im not against building another silva to run caps.. But I want to run what most run or are running..
I know I ran a CW on caps last year and just did not see many of them on caps.. I figured I would try to run with the majority... I dont have a local cap track.. So Ill be driving everywhere I go..
Mike Pavlick 05-04-2007, 03:01 PM Sean, when we went down to tennessee last year the majority was running hyperdrive I think that is the way I would go!!!! Or maybe I already have lolololooloolloo!!!!! no but seriously give me a call tonight (216)926-2621 I would like to hear what you have to say
brian0525 05-04-2007, 03:04 PM GEN2 works great!
my .02!
wingnut67 05-04-2007, 03:06 PM i run the C/W AGGRESSOR on cap tires and it is real fast but a lot of the guy i race with run PRO 3 and it is fast on caps to
Kenwood 05-04-2007, 03:06 PM Here what I have to say??? I have nothing to add as far as experience goes.. Last time I seriously raced caps would have been like 1992.. And I dont have enough spare parts to keep my H10RS pivot ball car going...LOL.. I ran 1 race last year and had fun...But My chassis was not working very well.. I dont want to convert my current cars because Id rather just have a chassis I can keep for caps and not worry about scrathing it up on concrete/asphalt..
Ill call ya tomorrow.. Ive got a B-day party to go to tonight.
Run what is the most popular at your track;for 2 reasons:1 set-up help, and 2: availability of parts.
pmsimkins 05-04-2007, 03:28 PM If you liked your Silva on carpet get another for caps. It is all what you are comfortable with like I said before.
RC racers are like Lemmings. I seem to rember when people said HD cars were "junk" on carpet, but great on caps. Then Frank comes along and dominates on carpet and now everyone thinks the HDs are the be all and end all on carpet. Then there was a period of time when the KSG cars were supposedly "junk" on caps, right up until Andy Mac laid it down every race on caps for a few years.
IndyRC_Racer 05-04-2007, 04:44 PM I think the reality is that a lot of racers (myself included) are lazy. We only want to know what is best - meaning what won most recently - so we can copy the setup and supposedly go fast ourselves. Having said that, there is value to running a similar car to what other people at a specific track are using because you will have more local collective knowledge. However, I've seen many times a good outside racer come to my local track and dominate using something different that what the "locals" are using.
I'm personally running a 6-cell stock capped tire class at the Indy Velodrome using an old Associated 10L3o chassis. Only modifications I've made to the car is to add a shock across the top of the front upper a-arms and extended motor pods. My car has been TQ at the last 2 races, but that is because I've got a good setup for me on it.
Any t-plate designed car with a decent amount of adjustablility should be able to work at any given track that is using capped tires.
burbs 05-04-2007, 05:03 PM For whatever reason, the Hyperdrive solid chassis cars have always been the easiest to get fast on caps.. the 500, Pro 2, and the new pro 3 re all good..
Ksg cars will also work well, but do take a bit more to be fast...
The maverick solid chassis is a killer fast cap tire car...
The only car i have tried that i did not like on cap tires is the custom works aggressor.. Its a dominating carpet car, but I haleped a buddy a while back with his, and it just didnt seem to hook up right.. Ive also seen quite a few others with CW's be fast on the rug, but not as fast on caps..
Brand aside, i think your best be is a solid chassis car...
Danny B 05-04-2007, 05:15 PM Well, it is pretty well know that HD and KSG have evolved from cap tire racing. Other's were based on foam tire racing, Assoc., Silva, LE.
Here's a little history, The Dillon tweak system was prototyped on a Hyperdrive car. The racetech G-force evolved from that. The T-plate and front end mounting locations were exactly the same on the HD 500's and G-force-KSG Gen 2(0 locations) etc.
I had a G-force that was awesome on caps, I've had 2 or 3 different versions of HD cars that were ballistic on caps. My gen 1 and gen 2 KSG cars are fast everywhere we go.
My personal favorite was HD 0500 black magic graphite...:-)

You got that right brother!!!
Soild Chassis is the only way to go!!
SDL98 05-04-2007, 07:41 PM I'm just your average Joe racer but I have really liked my Mav 05 OPC on caps. Has been my most consistent car when temps change etc. Guess I'll find out tomorrow at Marshalltown Ia on the crete since I never raced it there before.
ScottH 05-05-2007, 12:30 AM My personal favorite was HD 0500 black magic graphite...:-)
That was an awesome car. Ahhhh those were the days.
Like Danny B said there are a lot of cars that are fast on carpet and or caps,at the moment the HD's are pretty much the dominate car everywhere you go,Here at Easley (Capped tire track) we've had a Maverick 05 solid car be very very fast as well as a RIP car and a KSG,but the dominant car has most always been a HD,parts availability is second to none as is the team support.Whichever you choose I would highly recommend a solid chassis,I think even on carpet (I've never ran carpet) I would go with the solid chassis.
