Mike Russell 05-01-2007, 07:01 AM The 2007 Ovalmasters presented by Hyperdrive is set for November 9-11 at Greeneville RC in Tennessee. Thanks to Hyperdrive who is title sponsor for the third straight year and to PRS Gears who this year will co-sponsor the event. Greeneville RC did such a great job with the race last year,I decided to go back there for 2007. I am working on the class structure and scheduling along with a new web page that we hope to have up by July 1st.
2006 was an great event and I hope you can make the 2007 event part of your race schedule. Check out last years event at http://www.oval-masters.com/

Allan A 05-03-2007, 09:52 AM I am very proud to have the OVALMASTERS at Greeneville R/C Speedway again. Last year we had 122 entries and thanks to good racers & staff, everything went off without a hitch. I have already had a call wanting to know when they can enter & reserve their pit. Mike is lineing up some good sponsors. We will have the entry form up soon.
Thanks

GMC24 06-17-2007, 10:17 PM What are the classes ? Thanks
JH Racing 06-17-2007, 10:19 PM Mike and Allan will more than likely work that out after the Paved Nats.
Mike Russell 06-18-2007, 07:34 AM Should have the class info up on the website sometime early in July.
davepull 06-24-2007, 12:29 AM little early but will brushless be aload to run in open mod?
JH Racing 06-24-2007, 05:59 AM Allan can you put some motel info for people that want to make an early Reservation.
Mike Russell 06-24-2007, 06:06 AM Not sure yet Dave. That's still one of the things I'm thinking about.
Mike Russell 06-25-2007, 04:16 PM We are considering combining brushed and brushless modified at The Ovalmasters this year. I'd like to get some thoughts from the mod racers before we finalize the class.
thanks
JH Racing 06-25-2007, 06:43 PM Mike my only question would be is what brushless motor will be legal ? The reason is because it would be cheaper for me to buy one brushless motor than a brushed motor, brushes springs etc.
Tornado_Racing 06-25-2007, 07:17 PM We are considering combining brushed and brushless modified at The Ovalmasters this year. I'd like to get some thoughts from the mod racers before we finalize the class.
thanks
In On-road they combine the brushed and brushless in Mod. I am all for it.
I know for a fact Flipper, Miller, and myself will be there for sure!
RCThunder 06-25-2007, 09:41 PM We ran them together here on carpet last week in open mod and had 8 cars - I think 4 were brushed and 4 were brushless. Results were identical I thought. I ran a 6 turn and ran with the 3.5s no problem. I like the idea. Might bring more racers back to 4cell pro mod again.
JH Racing 06-25-2007, 09:45 PM I'm for it more racers do it.
Monti007 06-25-2007, 11:40 PM We are considering combining brushed and brushless modified at The Ovalmasters this year. I'd like to get some thoughts from the mod racers before we finalize the class.
thanks
I would prefer not to combine nor to even offer brushless in Mod. My reasons for this is that 1) brushless motors are faster than a mod motor hands down. A Novak 3.5 runs like a 5 and half or thin web 6 turn. By combining the class you are just wedding out all the brushed motors. I have done extensive testing on this over the last winter and it never fails an ill car with a 3.5 will run with a good car and a brushed motor. Mod is already fast enough we do not need faster motors and running brushless just adds to that. 2) With so many different mgf of brushless motors it will be hard to decide which company can or can not be allowed. So if company A has a motor that is faster than company B everyone will have to buy a motor from company A. I know that an easy fix would be to just limit it to one motor but remember we are running mod and not 4300 (which designates what motor to run) I ask this, why make an open “Modified” class spec? 3) We mod racers are supposed to be the "best of the best" and that limiting our options on what we can use to tune with is taking the skill out of running mod. Mod racing takes skill in not only tuning a car, driving it, but also how to tune on a motor. I fell if mod racers are to run brushless then we just might as all run 4300. I like to think of running mod as racing F1, we work so hard on our cars to make them as fast as they can go (just like in F1), but it does not make sense to me to run the same motor as everyone else.
RC racing is a hobby/sport and no matter what hobby you have (fishing, golf, bowling, or softball) you need to have a certain amount of skill in order for it to be entraining or even be competitive at it. Mod racing does require a more diverse set of skills to run at a high level of competition. I hear a lot about people say or think that “more people would run mod if it were brushless”. Yeah, you might have more people run for awhile but they are going to stop running it after they realize it takes a lot more to running mod than just a motor (be it brushed or brushless). If you take a look at 4300 for example at this past nationals in Greenville. The top four finishers in 4300 were well known and experienced mod racers, the reason why, is that these guys know what it takes to be fast. And if you give them a stock motor, 4300 motor, or a 3.5 motor they are still going to be at the top. I think people have delusions of grandeur when it comes to brushless racing. The number one thing a lot of people say about brushless is that they “don’t have to work on motors” or “man this is awesome not working on motors”. I have even said this my self from time to time. But why is it so great? The reason why is that we (you and I) want to be lazy from time to time and have fun which is great. But why would you want to come to a major race (like the Oval Masters) and want to be “lazy” and not work on motors? If that is what a racer wants to do then so be it, run 4300 that class is already there for you!
Again allowing brushless motors in mod racing is taking out a part of the skills needed to be fast in mod. If you limit the variables of what is need to be fast you are just making another “spec” (for lack of a better term) class. I know I might be in the minority on this but it is how I feel.

Monti007 06-25-2007, 11:43 PM In On-road they combine the brushed and brushless in Mod. I am all for it.
I know for a fact Flipper, Miller, and myself will be there for sure!
Yeah they do combine it but everyone is running brushless now and not brushed at all. The reason why is that they are faster with a brushless system than a brushed motor. Do we really need to go faster than what we are now?

Sonny B 06-25-2007, 11:58 PM Brushless mod
JH Racing 06-26-2007, 02:12 AM Is their such a thing as dropping a class and maybe adding a brushless mod class, I would rather run brushed mod and a brushless class as a second class.
brian0525 06-26-2007, 08:32 AM I don't have an opinion cause I don't run it, but I would like to watch them run together!
davepull 06-26-2007, 09:17 AM open mod is just that OPEN mod so there should be no limitations on what brushless motor that can be run. what I mean is if brusless is allowed and I want to run a 3.5 or a 5.5 so be it or a tekin , novak, lrp, etc it's open mod.
I would like to see brushless allowed.
davepull 06-26-2007, 09:22 AM and yes I plan on running it
JH Racing 06-26-2007, 10:17 AM Whatever is decided on I'm good with because I plan on having a brushed and brushless cars.
Rick W 06-26-2007, 11:34 AM Good luck on your decision Mike, A lot of different opinions
Scarecrow One 06-27-2007, 03:17 AM Wow, Fishing down here sucks this time of the year. It's just to hot. You got to fish deep to get into that cooler water.
Mike, before all those worms get out of that CAN you just opened. Would you send some to me. hehehehehe
The hardest decision to make is doing something new. If it works your a "Hero". If it doesn't the WORLD will tell you "I told you so"
DO IT.
It's OPEN MOD. Limits. Tires must fit inside the body. (nascar body) Chassis Height not to drag the track. Driver( Well everyone hopes they can drive fast)
"On the Tone"
swtour 06-27-2007, 06:12 AM Yeah they do combine it but everyone is running brushless now and not brushed at all. The reason why is that they are faster with a brushless system than a brushed motor. Do we really need to go faster than what we are now?
Kenny Collins of KC Racing at the PCSO in Phoenix AZ just a month and a half ago or so set the NEW track record...? I think THAT was a combo class!
Had some pretty heavy hitters too. I think what I heard all day was that he ran a 6x1 BRUSHED - Other racers included Jeff HUMPTY Helms, Raymond McCoy, Erik Steenhoven and several other of the WESTS hot dogs...
Ok, so this was done by a MOTOR GUY with ALL the best tuning available - best of the best, which is the best reason to allow BRUSHLESS (for those who don't want to have to be 'the best of the best' at building and maintaining MOD motors...and cutting them and rebrushing them and breaking them in...and so on...EVERY Round.)
JH Racing 06-27-2007, 02:17 PM I think building motors is part of the fun it makes time go buy that's if you have your car right .
Larry B 06-27-2007, 04:06 PM Take a look at the poll of entries for the Oval National's at Easley, SC. Over 50% of the entries are in brushless classes, an another 25% are in the nitro classes. As of yesterday no 19 turn brushed less than 13% for stock and 15% for Mod. I know it is still subject to change but I do see a pattern of change comming to the hobby. I know that 13.5 brushless and .09 nitro are for me and 13.5 at the Ovalmasters if offered.
By the way, Mike and Allen do a great job.
Mike Russell 06-30-2007, 07:44 AM Thanks for the input guys. From the e-mails and responses here it seems about 50\50. I'm gonna take a few days of sand, surf, and suds to think about this. Web guy says the hew webpage will be ready when I get back....Hell,it's 5 o'clock somewhere!!!!!!!!
RCThunder 06-30-2007, 10:46 AM http://www.snowbirdnationals.com/sound/FiveOClock.wma
I hear ya Mike! I just wonder though since brushless is becoming so big in road and even off-road now, when do we join in? It is going to happen one day that is for sure...
Mike Russell 07-16-2007, 07:32 AM The website has been updated for 2007. Will have the entry form up by August. We have decided to keep Pro-Mod to brushed motors only this year. We felt that there was not sufficient time for all the Mod racers to make the switch (if the wanted too) and become familiar with brushless on carpet by November.

JH Racing 07-16-2007, 04:57 PM Good choice Mike.
